We can't keep crapping the bed with strikeouts when we've got RISP and less than 2 outs though. Have to fix that before we do anything in the playoffs. I don't like to see our guys taking home run hacks to win it when all we need is a base hit to tie it and stay alive.
Ideally we don't run into a situation where we have to face Melancon while trying to play from behind. The Pirates have been nearly bulletproof this year leading after 8, and I don't like our odds of changing that.

Gotta get the early lead and hold it.

Very true BUT, when we've got Castro on 3rd and 1 out, we have to find a way to get him in. I don't care if it's a squeeze, but we need some bat-on-ball action there.

That's been the biggest issue with the Cubs offense for as many years as I can remember now. They're terrible at making contact in those situations, sometimes.

Part of me says Soler cause he hasn't been great all year and could be a big bat coming off the bench.

Also isn't Baez a infielder or did he play some Outfield?

Well disappointing start for Jake Arrieta tonight. Only 7 IP and he gave up a single. Probably should see about a move to the pen for him.

I wonder if Joe was relieved that Jake lost the perfect game/no hitter. He's gone over 120 pitches each of his last 2 games, and I would guess Joe didn't want to extend him out that far again tonight.

                      Schwarber is a lock.

Coghlan will stay bc of his utility and he's been there all year, and he bats Lefty

Baez v DeNorfia v LaStella is a tough one to call. Take Baez's Glove, imo. LaStella has put up good numbers over a short sample, better OPS etc. Denorfia should be left off...and I think it's a tossup if you're only going to take one of the other two.

Soler is hopefully just getting an extended audition...he has been inconsistent all year, and has had inconsistent playing time.

Jackson...idk why, but I like him. Probably 1st on the list to go. Not enough production, too many Ks. we could get that from Soler with added pop.

Probably so. If Maddon decides to keep 12 pitchers instead, Denorfia would stay on. The Wild Card roster will have all of the position players, including Berry, since they don't need more than 2 starting pitchers.

Yeah, there's no chance we take 13 pitchers on the playoff roster. Remember that we are using 3 SPs, 4 at maximum in the playoffs (and just 1 for the WC game) so Hendricks or Hammel may go to the pen. Sayonara Dan Haren. Denorfia will make it as a right-handed compliment to Schwarbs/Coghlan. Also Austin Jackson has a good chance of making it. We may take a guy strictly for pinch running like you mentioned with Berry.

Speaking of Dan Haren...pitching at the GABP tomorrow. That is unlikely to go well. But we still have an outside chance of stealing home field in the playoff game if STL can keep PIT down.

The way Castro is playing you have to keep him on the roster. Really shouldn't even be a question. Guy was probably the best hitter in baseball the month of September.
