Hanigan is likely done as a Red too. They signed Brayan Pena to be the backup catcher, so he'll probably be traded as well.

I have even heard he has been told not to come to Reds fest.
On sports talk last night they were saying Walt doesnt think BP is a team player and that Dusty covered for him way too much the last few years.
It will be interesting to see what they get for him.
I am very mixed on what they should do with him.

I think he meant his lack of hustle and his attitude.

The Reds need a CF to replace Choo…and will need a 2B. How about BJ Upton and Dan Uggla for BP? Sounds good to me….

I agree, BP has always done whats ask of him. He will hit anywhere he is asked and dont complain and not a lot of guys are like that of his caliber. Heck he was in the RBI race this year, yet he moved from cleanup to the 2 hole and didnt cry about it. Votto was the one who should have gotten moved to the 2 hole this year, cause he seemed to value walks over hitting, and with his OBP it made more since to move Votto than it did the guy who was one of the RBI leaders in the league.

Im not totally against trading him if it makes us better, but its going ot be hard to be better when your trading one of the 3 best players on the team.
I know BP ticked off Bob and Walt with his comments after AS break, but he was asked a question and answered it the way he honestly felt. Personally I think he should have kept his mouth shut about it, and if he felt lied to then why did he sign the contract in the 1st place. I do think Bob and Walt could have handled things better by being upfront with BP and saying hey we want to see if we can get Votto locked up then we will see what we can do for you, instead of saying they had no money, when obviously they did to give Votto all that money then pay BP good.

Both BJ and Ugla are strike out machines, and Ugla is a huge downgrade defensively as well as offensively, no way do I want either of them. We have enough guys who struggle to make contact we dont need to add 2 more to the lineup. Only way I want to see BP traded is if it makes us better, and gets us some financial relief.

LMBO at Walt thinking BP has a lack of hustle. He gives his all every time out. BP isnt the only one on the team who could use a swift kick in the rear getting down the line to 1st base, cause Votto does the same thing. Votto is my favorite player but I think its ridiculous when people say BP dont hustle yet they give Votto a break when he is just as bad if not worse than BP getting out of the box and hustling down the line. IMO while Votto is the best player, BP is the MIP on the team cause of his versatility to bat anywhere in th elineup he is ask. Id also put Bruce ahead of Votto as far as importance to the team. We did pretty dang well in 12 when Votto went down with injury, and I doubt if BP missed a lot of time or Bruce mossed a lot of time that we would far as well as we did without Votto. Going forward I actually think Bruce will be our best and MIP on the team.

Does Brandon Phillips want to be traded? No, he doesn't.

But his unprofessional behavior has really burned some bridges this season. Probably not smart to call your bosses in the front office a bunch of liars when they gave you a contract extension that most baseball pundits said was very very generous of them. Probably not smart to barge into your manager's pre-game press conference to go after a reporter with a profanity laced tirade that went viral on the internet, all because the reporter pointed out his atrocious on-base percentage.

And these two quotes from a Hal McCoy article were very telling....

While Phillips is popular with fans through his Twitter account and his willingness to sign autographs, he is not so popular in the clubhouse and is thought of as a self-promoter. Said one man who is in the clubhouse every day, “You can’t tell by Brandon’s face whether we won or lost, but you can tell if he went 0 for 4 or 2 for 4 no matter if we won or lost.”

At least one National League scout said late last year,“I wouldn’t have that guy on my team.”

Phillips is not going to get any younger, and outside of RBIs, he had a horrible season at the plate. He's already lost a step. He loses another step or two, and suddenly the only thing giving him value, his range at second base, becomes very pedestrian. If someone else is willing to take that albatross of a contract, by all means, take it.

If the front office wants to get rid of Phillips obviously its their right but I feel like that's just adding to the issues they've got to attack in the off season. I'd be more interested in them addressing poor hitting from 3B and LF.

And their thinking is they can add more hitting with Phillips money.
Its pretty simple if they keep Phillips they are maxed out and have no more money to spend. If they trade him it will free up about $10 milion dollars to spend where they need it.

They just have to play it smart. If they trade him and end up with nothing but the return on the trade, it's a failure. This is still a contending team, can't blow it up just yet especially with new leadership with Price as manager.

That said, this needs to happen. The more that leaks out, the lower BP's value is going to be. I guess it's not so bad that he can't return to camp without it being a huge distraction ... Well check that, it will be. There's a lot of uncertainty for a pretty good team this offseason. Hope it works in our favor.

“I asked Walt Jocketty if Price is up to the task of disabusing Joey of the notion that a base on balls is as beneficial as a run scoring sacrifice fly. Walt gave me an emphatic ‘Yes,’ but added, ‘that is something many more of us in the organization will also try to convey.’
I have no problem with Joey's approach to hitting. Joey patterns his approach from Ted Williams, who patterned his approach from Rogers Hornsby, who told Teddy Ballgame the secret to hitting was "waiting for the good pitch."

So Joey is only going to swing when he feels good and ready, much to the chagrin of the media and fans....

“[he] became notorious for never going after anything less than a perfect pitch with less than two strikes and never ever for one outside the strike zone. Start swinging at bad balls, he figured, and you would be sure to see more of them…”

Such is the experience of Joey Votto.....except that quote above was from the Boston media about Ted Williams.

Reds made some hires today for the staff....

Jay Bell - bench coach (was the hitting coach for Pittsburgh last season, him and Bryan Price crossed paths in Arizona back in 2007)
Don Long - hitting coach (was the Braves minor league hitting coordinator the past three seasons. Also worked in Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Anaheim)
Jeff Pico - pitching coach (been in the Arizona organization the past 11 seasons)

Price also mentioned that assistant pitching coach Mack Jenkins will remain on staff.
