Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
So the latest rumor is the Reds looking at PED Head Melky Cabrera. He allegedly wants a minimum 5 year deal. I pray the Reds aren't that stupid. Sure he is a decent player, but A) he doesn't help with power and B) I don't want him for 5 years.
I am not sure how I am going to handle the Reds this offseason should they decide NOT to actually improve the team. Every year I watch the Cardinals make moves and continually improve themselves. They are in it to win it every year also. I would put the chances of me staying a Reds fan at 75% right now. If nothing is done, it likely goes to 10-20%. After 35 years of being a fan, suffering through the 1980's, much of the 1990's, all of the 2000's and now 4 years into the 2010's, my love and passion for the game is diminishing rapidly.
I thought when we got Junketty a few years back that it would mean we would finally be a good team again. But since the 1970's, sans a few years, we have been crap. Sure we aren't the worst team in the league every year, but we have rarely made the playoffs and outside of 1990 haven't done anything once we got there anyway.
So I either need to figure out if I just give up following baseball or pick another team to like and follow. Maybe Junketty will surprise me and actually do something this year, but he has proven over and over that is not likely to happen. Or at least it's not likely to be that much of an upgrade.#WeAreUKComment

Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
The Reds shouldn't trade Chapman. They should make him a starter and trade one of the starters for a bat.
But if they are going to insist on wasting him in the bullpen, then by all means, if the Marlins are willing to overpay for him (Christian Yellich?)...pull the trigger.
MLB Trade Rumors mentions some interest for John Axford. Wouldn't be a bad signing for bullpen depth if it's cheap and only a one year contract (I'm ignoring the fact that he's also a former Cardinal). I dare Jocketty to give him a two year deal.
MLB Trade Rumors also mentioning the Reds have had discussions with the Red Sox about Yoenis Cespedes.
Reds have also loaded up on minor league free agents, signing 11 this offseason, with only Marquez Smith being the only one who was with the organization last year. What is telling though is that the Reds are signing some quality bats and power arms.
Infielder Josh Satin has walked nearly as often as he has struck out in Triple-A over the last two seasons and has a .399 OBP in that time. Middle infielder Irving Falu has more walks than strikeouts in his minor league career. Brennan Boesch hit .332 and slugged .636 in Triple-A this past season, though he’s struggled in the big leagues in recent years.
On the flip side of things the arms aren’t as polished as some of the hitters, but the Reds are trying to follow the “Jumbo Diaz plan” of acquiring big time arms and hoping to make the right adjustments and getting high-leverage relievers on the cheap. Jose Cisnero is coming off of Tommy John surgery. He topped out at 98 MPH before injuring himself. Jose De La Torre, another right hander, topped out at 96 MPH in the big leagues. Jose Flores is another fireballing right hander that tops out at 98 MPH. Wilmer Font joins that group of guys with huge arms and has topped out higher than all of them, hitting 99 MPH on several occasions.
Granted they all have control issues, but with the right mechanical adjustments, they could become useful, cheap options for the bullpen. And if not, hey, Louisville is always in need of players.Last edited by jasontoddwhitt; 12-09-2014, 02:20 PM.Comment

Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
Jocketty said tonight that deals will only be made if payroll will be shed. That means no Leake/Latos for Cespedes deal since the latter makes the same as Leake/Latos.
By the way, I'd totally do a Chapman for Yelich deal. I actually suggested it to friends during an e-mail exchange yesterday. Considering the Marlins just traded Heaney away, and they seem to be talking to every available free agent, I wonder what kind of promises they made to Stanton about how quickly they are going to try and contend. If they are willing to deal Heaney then maybe they'd deal Yelich.MLB: Cincinnati Reds

Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
I wouldn't mind Chappy for Yelich but overall if the gameplan is to dump payroll and not trade equally, then doesn't that mean for the most part they are looking for mediocre or unproven talent?
I couldn't be more upset with this organization right now. They put themselves in a tight tight corner with Votto's contract and barring him retiring, we are stuck with it. My only hope is that he (this might sound familiar) returns to the old Votto and has 5-8 years of MVP type seasons to make that contract even close to worth it. Unfortunately it doesn't help the rest of the payroll and the fact that we will never be able to make the necessary moves that we need to. Not that Junketty would anyway, as he CLEARLY loves sitting on his hands and doing nothing.#WeAreUKComment

Word is we're close to dealing Latos to Miami.
Sooo, a rebuild is in order? Do it big then. I don't mind losing 2-3 seasons if that means the 5 after that are competitive when the prospects come back. But don't let Cueto walk after the season for nothing. If we're gonna rebuild, then commit to it. Nothing worse then limbo.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers

Looking like Simon to Tigers but not sure who we get in return.#WeAreUKComment

Saurez and Crawford (Tigers #1 pick last year). I really like that move by Walt. Simon had a good 3 months and this saves them 5 mil while upgrading in a position of need and getting another arm with upside.
Now to see what we get for Latos from Miami. Come on Yelich!Cincinnati Reds University of Kentucky Cincinnati Bengals

C. Ralph Rosecrans @ctrent
A talent evaluator texted me & said he loves DeScalfani, would trade him for Latos straight up. #Reds #Marlins
I'm disappointed by that move personally, but we'll see. I really hope the Reds don't try and resign Cueto.Cincinnati Reds University of Kentucky Cincinnati Bengals

Re: 2014 Cincinnati Reds Thread
As much as I have been irritated with the Winter Meetings, I am starting to be happy. Still need a left fielder and have heard that the Reds are trying "at all costs" to trade Phillips which, IMO, needs to happen. He is chemistry killer and it is time for him to go if possible. He still has to approve a trade but maybe they can make it happen.
I think there will be another deal or two announced today, at least that is my hope, so stay tuned. For now, I went from nearly hating Junketty to only disliking him and if he trades Phillips I may actually start liking him again. We'll see.#WeAreUKComment

As much as I hate Jocketty he usually does a very good job with trades so I will give him the benefit of the doubt here. I'd be ecstatic if he could trade Philips too though.
