    2013 Toronto Blue Jays

Thought we might as well have a thread on 2013 team instead of using the offseason thread for 2013 too since that thread has gotten fairly big in a 3 month timespan.

Same story as last spring training regarding Lind/Rasmus. Both trying to improve from years past, and both saying that they wanna simplify what they do and stop trying too much.

    Rasmus in 1st half of 2012:17HR,53RBI,.259AVG(including a 8HR,25RBI,.291 June)
Lind in 2nd half of 2012:4HR,25RBI,.304AVG

Rasmus in 2nd half and Lind in 1st half both sucked. So whatever Rasmus changed, hopefully he changes back to how he started 2012. And hopefully whatever Lind changed, he keeps it up.
First ST game is next Saturday at 1pm and will be on TV!
    Pics from ST so far:

It's looking more and more like David Cooper is never going to be able to have a big league career.

Cooper out with serious back injury; won't report to ST camp

Jays haven't had best of luck with DH guys. That's something I wish Jays had. Sorta strange to think that in the 35+ years of the Jays, we've only had 1 guy start 3 straight opening days for us at DH.

Hopefully one day the Jays are able to find a DH who'll be here for years and years to come.

The hype machine is in full effect as there was a special edition of Blue Jays Central on this evening. One thing that didn't really occur to me until it was pointed out by Brunt is the Dominican influence on this team. The Dominican players have basically formed a clique amongst themselves. BTW there'll be a Close Up program on the 11th of March (I think) that goes into that whole subject as Brunt goes down to the Dominican and looks at the baseball culture there.

In basketball, when Raptors stocked up on international guys, it wasn't working, but in baseball, Jays doing similar thing works perfectly.

Reasons like the Dominican things are why it sucked seeing Ortiz resign with Red Sox BEFORE we did all this. Had he known that so many Dominican guys were gonna be on Jays team, he probably would have wanted to come here(better shot at winning one last WS, AND he gets to play with guys like Bautista,Reyes,EE and so on). He's the DH the Jays need.

Any Jays fans know policy on upgrading tickets?

EX-If I buy tickets for Section X(lets just call it that) Row 5, and at a later date(like a week before the actual game I'm going to), online I see that Section X has seats suddenly available in Row 2, how do I go about getting the better row, since it is in the same section. If I printed tickets from computer, do I have to go to Rogers Centre just to upgrade or what?

Cause I wanna get tickets now(incase they get taken later on), but don't want to if I cant upgrade(cause if better seats are available in that section, I obviously would prefer sitting there)

And which side is Delgados name being added to level of excellence? RF or LF side? I'm guessing LF since it only has 4 names(compared to 5 on RF).

The Jays released 2008 first round pick David Cooper today according to BleacherReport. Kind of a head scratcher to me...

He has back issues and how many options did he have left, 1 or 0? He could be re-signed to a minor league deal is what I'm seeing.

Not surprising, the kid has a ton of potential but his back is so wonky it doesn't seem worth it to keep him around unless they sign him to a minor league deal.

We already have a 1B/DH type who has back issues, why keep a younger version of the same situation?

So is it time to really worry about Ricky Romero?

He's had a very bad spring this year and has looked physically and mentally overwhelmed to the point that he's just not in a good place right now. I daresay he may need a stint in the minor leagues to completely retool himself. It's a shame Mel Queen is no longer with us as he saw what was wrong with a young Roy Halladay and completely rebuilt his mechanics from the ground up. I don't know if there's a Mel Queen type of guy lurking in the Blue Jays system that can be of help to him that way.

Either way, today was a pivotal day for Romero and again he didn't perform well tossing 3 innings and allowing 3 earned runs though he did strike out 4. His spring ERA is 7.24 right now whereas J.A. Happ has been outpitching him and deserves a starting spot IMO.

What say you fellow Jays fans?

                        Re: 2013 Toronto Blue Jays

The positive thing about this is that he's our #5 starter at this point, so worse scenario is that he's out of rotation and we just get another guy like Happ to be 5th starter. Unlike last year where if Romero struggled, nothing we could do because he(for most of season since Morrow was out abit) was basically our only real MLB SP.

He changed things up from 2011 to 2012, seems like in 2013 he's not able to change back. But it's times like this where I really hope Jays do have the right coaches. Imagine if Cito and his staff wasn't around in 2010, Bautista wouldn't be Bautista. Like what was said about Halladay, Queen helped him out big time too.

So I really hope there is someone on Jays who is able to help guys out big time. Doesn't mean they can turn someone who looks average into a star, but at least be able to get guys on right path.

                          Something I thought about....

Assuming roster was healthy(minus Drabek/Hutchison who were already declared to miss 2013 months before) and none of the TRADES happened, how do people think Jays would fare in 2013 after seeing Yankees declining with injuries/age, Red Sox not really improving, and O's potentially being a fluke?

                          C-JP
                          1B-EE
2B-Izturis(was a signing BEFORE any trade happened)
                          3B-Lawrie
                          SS-Hech
                          LF-Melky(was a guy we signed)
                          CF-Rasmus
                          RF-Bautista
                          DH-Lind

                          SP-Morrow
                          SP-Romero
                          SP-Happ
SP-Alvarez(without the trade,he'd still be in our rotation)
                          SP-???

                          RP:
                          Janssen
                          Santos
                          Oliver
                          Delabar
                          Loup
                          Jeffress

I actually think that'd have been a 85+ win team right there. MIGHT reach 90 if they were lucky.

Cause to start 2012, Jays were a WC contender(before injuries happened). Many power ranking sites had Jays around top 10 in entire MLB, and likely still would be with almost same roster in 2013 as they had in 2012(assuming 2013 roster wasn't anywhere close to as injured as 2012 one was)

I think your question is moot anyways....

It was pretty clear to me that the Blue Jays were going to make changes for the 2013 season no matter what happened. (well unless they had made a deep run in the playoffs) If you really think about it the culture of the ballclub had become a bit stale with too many guys with the same kind of "golly gee, we're laidback good guys" kind of thing going on. The disastrous 2012 season and the internal bruhaha with Farrell not reigning in his players proved to be too much and AA had to do a massive course correction.

But to answer your hypothetical question I don't think the Jays would be very good if they didn't make those major shakeups. and they'd probably be a .500 or so team.

So according to Gibby it looks like J.A. Happ may be sent down to Buffalo to start the season while Brett Cecil will be the long man out of the bullpen to start. This is basically because Cecil is out of options and Happ is more suited to be a starter rather than reliever.
