    Re: 2013 Toronto Blue Jays

I just checked tonight and realized Toronto is nearly 10 games back already! Still a long way to go, but every year we have a team/fanbase get excited for the offseason moves (2011 Red Sox, 2012 Marlins, 2013 Blue Jays for recent examples) and it just doesn't work out.

I thought the Gibbons hire was stupid, but this isn't all on him. I just don't think it's a very good team. Melky is clearly not a good player with out PED's, Johnson can't stay healthy, Buerhle is Buerhle, and Dickey is a 39 year old knuckler. Reyes being out doesn't help either, but I just don't see this getting better anytime soon.

BTW - Does ACMilan still post in here...I realized today I haven't seen him in a few weeks.

This is a key week for this team to show us what they can do. If they can't start winning with more regularity, I don't see how Gibbons lasts any longer. AA made these moves and Rogers finally opened the wallets and I'm sure 9-17 was not what they pictured.

He's been spending most of his time recently focusing on the Buffalo Bills. Another moribund franchise LOL. "sigh"

I agree with the consensus that this is a huge week for the Jays. As for your general point Blair mentioned that even after the hoopla of all the big moves he felt the lineup wasn't complete as he believes they need a left handed middle of the order bat and/or a REAL 2B.

I was listening to Baseball Central today, and Hayhurst brought up the point that the jays will need to play nearly .600 baseball here on out to win 96 games, and it's just May tomorrow. If the Boston series goes badly, I imagine some change will take place.

In Jays history, only 5 times has the team ever fired their coach during the season. 3 of those 4 seasons the replacement had an above .500 record during the season he took over. The only guy to not....Gibbons lol.

36 games in was the earliest it's ever happened though.

But never once in Jays history has anyone(not including temp coaches) coached less than a single season. The shortest was Tim Johnson(for obvious reasons), next shortest was Buck.

I agree with you though with the talent they have on the roster it's conceivable that they can do that but they really need to turn it around starting tonight.

I'm thinking Gibbons might last the entire season unless the internal turmoil spins completely out of control like it did when Cito was brought back. AA DOES have an ego despite not portraying himself as such and I think he'd be too prideful to can Gibbons in the middle of the year. Motolla is the first sacrificial lamb and I could maybe see some shuffling going on that gets Walker thrown out of town too by the all star break.

I hope and pray that we don't end up being this year's Marlins where we spent so much money only to have a bad season. Guys like Buerhle, Josh Johnson, and Botafacio have to step up. They are hopefully better players than they have shown so far.

                  Re: 2013 Toronto Blue Jays

Even if this season doesn't end up great, I still think we should at least give the roster another shot, assuming those guys(Johnson the main one) actually wants to come back.

I hope the Jays just end up being like the 2012 Angels, or 2012 A's or something(2013 Angels are almost same as 2013 Jays too...)

Angels were 8-15 after April and finished season with 89 wins(Jays are currently 9-17 after 26 games, Angels were 10-17 after 27 games...)

Angels averaged 3.48 runs for in April and 4.09 runs allowed.
Jays averaging 3.65 runs for and 5 runs allowed.

So runs allowed obviously worse, but offense wise, we're doing much better than Angels team which had Pujols,Trumbo,Morales among others.

A's on the other hand...went 26-35 to start season and they finished with 94 wins/1st in division!

So there are recent success turnaround stories in the AL, so lets hope Jays can be another one of those teams.

That was a big win, but it has to be two in a row.

Unbelievable performance by EE. It's truly remarkable the kind of hitter he has become. Also how the hell did Casey Janssen become such a location beast?

Credit to Buchholz, but there is the typical Jays face plant after a win. Amazing they have only won two games in a row once so far this season.

I think Jack Morris put it best. This is a team full of inconsistency right now and for whatever reason, they can't play good baseball for long periods. Buerhle was awful again and Buchholz shut the bats down although to be fair, shutting down the Blue Jay offense hasn't been difficult so far.

The offense needs to figure out how to get on base again and stop relying on the longball. It sounds redundant, but it's true.

                            Re: 2013 Toronto Blue Jays

This year has just become an epic disaster. Our runs for and against ratio of minus 42 is almost on par with Houston and Miami.

No one can get on base with any regularity now that Reyes is out. If we don't hit four home runs, we're not going to score six runs. It's absurd.

Cabrera and Rasmus might be two of the absolute worst hitting outfielders in the league. Rasmus' 40 strikeouts in 87 at bats are ludicrous. Cabrera is slugging .288.

The current double play combination of Kawaski/Izturis/Bonifacio is awful at the plate and in the field. I don't know if the Jays have had a worse middle infield in their history. The situation is so dire at second base I would kill for the second coming of Damaso Garcia.

If anyone thinks this team is going to turn it around anytime soon they're fooling themselves, there are substantial offensive problems. Unfortunately, the pitching hasn't been good enough to hide them. 13 quality starts in 28 games isn't going to get it done.

You figure something drastic is going to happen in the next two weeks -- a trade or a firing. This can't continue with a payroll of $125 million.

Losing Reyes was tough for that reason alone. He seems to be the only one who knows what getting on base means. Rasmus is so frustrating to watch because you know he's got some talent - something's just missing which leads to his poor AB's.

Hey Domaso Garcia was a pretty good player back in the day!

The shortstop play behind Reyes is so bad I wish Alex Gonzalez were still around. (now how's that for for crying out in desperation)

If the Jays don't win tonight i'm basically writing off the season. I'll still follow the team as any fan should but I won't be putting my heart and soul for a team full of players who seem to be loafing around. The only guys who seem to really care are either buried on the bench or injured (De Rosa and Reyes respectively) I said it semi-jokingly during ST but when Bautista said he sees no reason why this can't be a playoff team I said that those were famous last words.

                                I hate to be right.

There's something really off with this squad right now and I can't really pinpoint it. We all can see the deficiencies on the field but according to multiple reports the clubhouse atmosphere is poisonous. I know last season there were people grumbling that R.A. Dickey was only playing for himself rather than the Mets and of course we have Cabrera who was on PEDs and now can't hit the broadside of a barn now that he's off them. Rasmus is still Rasmus, a strikeout machine who can't hit for his life.

There are some strong personalities like Lawrie and i've noticed that the players are STILL jawing and arguing with the umpires. This team really needs a Buck Showalter type who can take control and lay down the law on these punks. I said it when Farrell was hired but I really wanted Showalter in Toronto.

                                Oh well....

Hey Ricky's back on Friday! (Oh Joy!)
