Re: NBA 2K18 Teach Me How To Thread : Tips,Plays,Defense

    For defense in park:
    • Do NOT press x or y EVER. Certainly never mash them.
    • Do NOT leave your man. Your man is always one pass away in 2v2 or 3v3. If my man beats me (coz I'm a fat slow center) I'd rather give up the 2 than the open 3 because you came over to help me.
    • Do NOT get screened. This is really hard to do.
    • Do NOT cherry pick after your team gets the ball. Long passes fail A LOT.
    • If your man has the ball try to stay between him and the basket.
    • If your man doesn't have the ball make two lines (in your mind don't draw on your screen) one to the ball and one to the basket. If he's an inside scorer stay closer to the basket line and sag off a little. If he's a sharpshooter stay closer to the ball line and play tighter.

Super simple ways to make me not yell at the screen when playing D lol.

There was a post on the 3rd or 4th page in this thread that said if you're a Shaq type big man you should use roll the right stick as this gives you a more forceful and powerful spin. Whereas if you're an AD type big man try doing the holding RT and LS towards the baseline/paint and let go of RT as this gives you a quicker post spin.

I'm a Shaq type post scorer and the RS roll works pretty consistently for me.
like the thread i made about the bigs in the park and pro am. everyone is a shaq like big. because an AD like big isnt tall enough nor is he heavy enough. until they fix the bigs speed with ball and lateral quickness to make both slower for really tall and heavy guys. there's no reason to make a kinda tall thin guy like AD. the only advantage you will have is if a fat big comes out to the 3 point line. you can blow by him. but that wont happen often since they wont play you close since you're a 6'11 non shooter big. they will wait for you on the outside of the paint. you wont be able to use your quicker post moves because the super large bigs defensive move just as quick as you do when you guys are really close to one another unless you face up and have room to blow by him with speed. basically a firs step means nothing unless you're way outside the paint. there is no hakeem dream shaking the taller/bigger guys. aint happening.

So. Post Moves. Hold Left Trigger, don't commence bouncing down yet. Keep your dribble alive. If your defender is pushing you with his strength and making you bend forwards you can counter this by either post spinning in the opposite direction of where his arm (this is very important to keep track of) is on your back OR post driving (using your off hand to hook the defender's arm that was just on your back). Your can trigger both the post spin and post drive with the Right Trigger (And get a much tighter spin) and by pointing the left stick to either your back shoulder for a post spin or to your ball hand for a post drive. You can also use the Right Stick to do those moves, just use them in the same direction as the left stick and you'll get a much more dramatic and forceful spin.

So, Left Stick and Right trigger for smaller, more agile bigs like Blake Griffin and Anthony Davis. Right stick for big bruisers like Demarcus Cousins or Zach Randolph.

Now once you get those moves down, this will start setting up your post fades. Now, once you do those moves you'll start to notice the defenders are playing off you and anticipating you going to the rim, effectively stonewalling you. Now is the time to start pulling out the post fades. I learned how to do all of them with the Square button so I'm not reliant on the stick (although I use the Right Stick for my up and unders sometimes if I'm lazy or I really want to pick a direction to go in.

To do a post fade to in either direction simply hold the Left Trigger and hold the Left Stick in that direction, then shoot with Square and you'll do a post fade in that direction. This is very very important. If you can't prove you can hit post fades with any kind of consistency, they are just going to let you take those all day and won't even bother contesting.

Now once you've proven you can hit post fades and know how to do post drives and spins is when you want to start implementing Post Shimmying into your game and not a second before. In order to do a post shimmy to the left (holding Left Trigger of course) Double Tap Square and hold the Left Stick to the left. What will happen is that your character will fake like he's fading or going right and then turn around and shoot to the left. To do a post shimmy to the right, Double Tap Square and hold the Left Stick to the Right.

Now once you start making those consistently. Abuse the **** out of up and unders, because now your defender has to jump everytime if he wants to have any chance at forcing you into a miss. Read the 2KU in how to do up and unders, because my fingers are cramping lol.

Also new this year is the Post Spin Shot. Back your guy down. Take your hand OFF the Left Stick so that it's completely neutral and double tap square. Your guy will take a post spin jumper to the opposite side shoulder. So if the ball was in his left hand he'll spin and fade to the right and vice versa if the ball was in his right hand. It's pretty cool and really useful to do as well after setting it up before hand with spins and drives (as during the animation he dips his shoulders as if he's going to drive in the direction before spinning the opposite way).
One of the best post tutorials I've read in a long time

I realize I suck at this game without a star player especially on offense. Can someone give tips on how to run a proficient offense with the Hawks.

              With the Hawks?

Start a My League, and trade for good players.

Seriously, learn your playbook. Practise them, so you know every branch.

-The badge only activates against the opposing player of the same position *and* one position up or down. So if your starting SF has Defensive Stopper, it will activate against the opposing SG, SF and PF...but not the PG or C

-The positions it activates against are based on where the given player plays in your starting lineup. I tested this by putting LeBron at starting PG in the pre-game lineup loading screen. Even though his natural position is SF, when he started at the point the Defensive Stopper badge only activated against the opposing PG and SG, not the SF.

-It's also based on where the opposing players play in their starting lineup. So if an opposing team starts players listed as shooting guards at SG and SF, your point guard's Defensive Stopper will only activate against the opposing PG and the SG that is actually slotted at SG, not the one slotted at SF.

-I haven't tested how these rules apply to opposing bench players
Yeah this was confirmed via twitter from a Dev responding to pro am players. It kind of sucks that as a 6’8 lockdown SF my badge doesn’t affect 6’6 point guards dribble spamming

                      Yes, and I love it.

Using it allows me to make actual rotations to make sure some guys always play together. For example with the Wizards when Gortat comes off for a rest, if Wall is on the floor Smith comes in, no Wall means Mahimi checks in. Jason Smith does not play without Wall on the floor, and I never have both Wall and Beal out at the same time.

I only use paint mode. Read the button commands and it is self explanatory.

No idea if it can be done online.

To do it go to the gameplan screen where you set minutes for each player. Press the button for "rotation timeline." On PS4 it is options, don't know it for xbox.

That takes you to the screen that shows what players are on the court throughout the game. It may look overwhelming but it is VERY simple.

Just see what the button controls are and experiment.

Anyone have any MyCareer pick and roll advice?

I'm a 7'1 two-way athletic finisher so my P&R game has to improve. I'm always settign screens, but I'm struggling to get the ball after the screen.

Anyone have any advice on how they go about it? Maybe advice on the path they take to the basket to bea the defenders and receive the pass?

                              Thanks
