This is what ive been trying to figure out. (Mainly because i grew up idolizing him and modeled my entire game after him, i still remember how excited i was when he got his live cover)
Im gonna have to disagree with post scoring defender. KG had the athleticism and skill to guard 1-5 and play 3-5.
So hes a defender right? But wait - He had the same number of seasons averaging 6 assists as he did averaging 2 blocks.
Okay so a playmaker? Well he probably has more infamous 'brick wall' highlights than Ben Wallace, and he led the league in rebounding for most of the early aughts.
Alright well then hes a rebounder? Well he scored 20-25 pts a game for most of his career, milking that baseline turnaround, or yamming all over some poor traditional pf with a baseline reverse.
Yes he worked out of the post, but that had more to do with an NBA that didnt understand what to do with a unicorn before the term unicorn even existed (he refused to be listed at his real height for exactly that reason). There are very few people that will point to his post move repertoire as his calling card, in fact the biggest hole in his game was probably his ability to get a bucket on the block when his team needed it. He scored because he was a walking mismatch - too fast and skilled for big men to cover and too big and strong for wings to slide down.
I guess if you are referencing his one good year in boston pre-injury you could make the post scoring defender argument. But KG in his prime? Thats a real conundrum. Heck, he even shot 37% from 3 on 1 attempt per game early in his career! Right now im leaning towards shot creating rebounder - it seems to offer the closest thing to the versatility and athleticism needed to replicate what he did on the court night and night out.
(Sorry for the rant i just couldnt let one of the most underrated players in nba history be reduced to a guy who protected the rim and scored on the block here and there - ask any of the 'unicorns' in the league today who they modeled their game after and almost everyone of them will say KG)
