    Re: Official Playbook thread...

Here comes the Mavericks. Starting roster:

    PG - Jason Terry
    SG - Devin Harris
    SF - Josh Howard
    PF - Dirk Nowitzki
    C - DeSagana Diop

The big debate for me is who to start between Erick Dampier and DeSagana Diop. Dampier is perhaps a more rounded player since he has slightly better offensive skills while still being a good defensive player. In the end, however, I went with Diop because he's better defensively and seems to better compliment other starters who are all scorers that will take majority of the shots. I especially can't resist his great shotblocking ability. Now for the plays:

    Baseline Exchange (Motion 1 set)
This play is good for Dirk to get him the ball on the wing near the baseline. Terry has the ball at the top of the key, then passes it to Howard standing a few feet away behind the arc. Howard then moves toward the top of the key and looks for Dirk to make his move from the opposite side of the court toward the near-side baseline, then gets Dirk the ball about 12-15 away from the basket.

High Post Clear PF (Motion 1 set)
This play can be ran for Dirk just about the same exact way at if it's done with KG. So check the T'Wolves section for description of this one.

    PG Take (Motion 1 set)
This is a good play to run to get Terry the ball on the wing. Check the Bulls section for explanation of this play.

    PG Reversal (1-4 High)
Another good play for Terry to take full advantage of his skills. Refer to the Knicks section for the description of it.

Pick Roll Forwards (Motion 2 set)
This is a play involving Dirk setting up in the post and Josh Howard standing on the perimeter near him. Check the Pistons section for explanation of this one.

    SG Take (Motion 1 set)
This is basically an Isolation play for Harris. He's not a great shooter, but it's still possible to take full advantage of his quickness and handles in this play. Harris should be able to get by just about anyone who guards him one-on-one.

    Give Back (Motion 5 set)
This is a play that has changed a bit from past NBA/CH 2K games. It involves Harris and Howard running a loose version of the weave. In this play Harris gets the ball from Terry near the top of the key then drives to the baket. On his way to the basket Harris dishes it off to Howard heading toward the baseline. Or Harris can keep the ball and look to score himself.

    Rub Read (Motion 5 set)
This is a play that can be executed with Dirk and Devin. Check the Magic section for explanation of this play. However, this play can be more effective for the Mavs than it is for the Magic since Dirk is a much better shooter than Dwight Howard.

    Next: Suns

I went from barely winning games to killing my opponents on Association. Last night I beat the Suns by 24 points. Play calling is definitely a big edge if you really know how to run your plays.

One more note is that not only must you run plays, but the timing of your execution is critical. Although not as important on lower difficulties, on Hall of Fame, your timing is absolutely essential if you want to pull of some great shots.

Before I go into that, here are the lineups I use: (I play 10 min quarters with fatigue- no adjustment to the fatigue slider)

      STARTERS:

      PG- Smush Parker
      SG- Kobe Bryant
      SF- Lamar Odom
      PF- Vladimir Radmanovic
      C- Chris Mihm

Near the end of the first my lineup is:

      PG- Jordan Farmar
      SG- Kobe Bryant
      SF- Luke Walton
      PF- Brian Cook
      C- Kwame Brown

      Start of 2nd quarter:

      PG- Jordan Farmar
      SG- Smush Parker
      SF- Lamar Odom
      PF- Brian Cook
      C- Kwame Brown

      Middle of 2nd quarter:

      PG- Jordan Farmar
      SG- Kobe Bryant
      SF- Lamar Odom
      PF- Vladimir Radmanovic
      C- Chris Mihm

I basically repeat this process in the 2nd half. Of course you'll have to make adjustments depending on fatigue, foul trouble, etc...

      Ok now onto the plays:

      High Rub SG-SF (Baseline One):
This play is awesome because it creates alot of movement. Basically PG kicks it out to the SF on the wing while SG moves to the top of the key. SF passes to SG at the top of the key and PF sets a pick near the freethrow line. With Kobe on the ball, he can easily use the pick and dunk---OR once the pick is used, the PF will cut to the basket so you can get an easy close range jumper or a dunk. Both Radmanovic and Cook are pretty good shooters so even if you pass a little early, they can easily hit the mid range jumper. Also, because of their height, they have no problem shooting over the mismatch from the pick.

      SG Clearout (Baseline One):
This is basically a sneaky isolation play for Kobe. I like it because its a discreet isolation play. You pass it to SG on the wing and you'll have the PF posting up for a second, but then he'll slowly move away leaving you 1 on 1. Kobe does his thing and its an easy 2 points. This is great because the defense doesn't realize it's an iso play so they don't double team you as much.

      Stack PG-PF (Motion 1):
This play is really awesome and because of it, Radmanovic and Cook have become my 3rd and 4th leading scorers and shoot a really high percentage. It's a very simple play to run because it sets up quick so you can run it even if the shot clock is running down. Basically PF sets a pick at the freethrow line and PG runs off it. With Smush, if the defense gets stuck, you can easily throw down a dunk (he's a great dunker). If they switch, the PF then rolls out and you can pass it back to the PF who can easily shoot over the smaller defender. Both Radmanovic and Cook have great jumpers and with their height, they become almost impossible to guard. If I need to I can take a step back and bust the 3.

      SG Dive (Triangle 1):
This is the bread and butter of the Lakers offense because it gives Kobe many options and it's a very simple play to run. Basically SG sets up on the wing while the PG runs to the opposite wing. The PF sets a pick in the middle and the SG cuts to the middle and runs off of this pick. At this point the PG passes the ball to the SG where he can continue all the way and dunk, stop for the jumper, or pause for the triple threat. Sometimes I'll even drive and kick it back out to the PF for an easy jumper if the defense is trying to catch up with me. With my lineup changes, Smush Parker also does a fairly good job with this play because he has pretty good dunking abilities.

      Inside Out SG-SF (Triangle 6):
This play is very versatile. Basically SG lines up on the wing while the rest of the team moves to the other side. PG passes to SG and it looks like an isolation play. At this point, I'll try to go 1 on 1 and take it in with Kobe, but if I have a good defender on me, I'll simply hold the ball for a second. The second part of this play has the SF (Lamar Odom preferrably) run off a pick and come around to the post of side that the SG is at. Kobe is an excellent passer, so I can usually lob this pass in or even get the pretty alley-oop. Or once I see the SF cutting, I'll drive to the basket and wait for the defense to collapse. At this point the SF should be open and Lamar can either drain the jumper or take it in and dunk it.

Power PF (Can't remember which set this in):
This play is a set up for a PF post but I don't really use it for that. This play has alot of movement in the offense which gives you alot of potential plays. There are alot of off the ball picks which frees up alot of players. Basically it starts with the PG at the top and the SF comes off a pick from the SG towards the corner 3. At this point, Lamar can either drain the 3 or hold. The SG will pop out and towards the top of the key and the SF can pass it back where a C will be posting up near the top of the free throw line. SG can either drop it down or swing to the PG who can then dump it down to the PF who is posting up on the lower block of the weak side. At this point the SG will come around off a pick towards the corner where the PF is at. If the defense double teams its an easy kick out to Kobe who can drain the jumper or drive it. Like I said there are many options here and I use it more for moving the ball around and finding a good shot. I've had many outcomes with this play and it's great to run if you find yourself running the same plays over and over again.

The reason I don't have 8 plays yet is because I have been perfecting one play at a time. Also, I haven't found 2 other plays that I really like yet. Timing is critical so you should know exactly when to pass and when the picks will come. Also, reading the defense is important. With versatile players like Kobe and Lamar, you really can be a pain in the *** for your defenders.

The Lakers have a very well balanced lineup with Cook and Radmanovic being tall shooters and Kwame and Mihm being exceptional rebounders. With the lineups I listed above, you can run just about any play still. My scoring has become very balanced with the exception of Kobe still getting about 30 points. My assists have gone way up and I'm shooting a much better percentage from the field.

Try it out and let me know what you think.

      Happy Gaming!

Nice post, verdizzy. There's some good advice here on how to use the Lakers.

I hate the Knicks playbook... which isn't much of a surprise considering who's at the helm this year ((at least it's a win-win for knicks fans this year as either they improve dramatically or we can finally say goodbye to Isiah)).

My question is... can you use other playbooks during your association games, or just your team-specific one? I found sooo many great plays that appear to run crisp and clean from the "All-Plays" playbook during my exhibition game that I want to use. Trouble is, it doesn't look like there is any place to switch your playbooks during association. Not before the game in the coaching options, or even during the game. I know I can switch plays, but what about using an entirely different playbook?

      Thanks!!!
I haven’t played in the Association mode so I don’t know for sure. All I know is that there is an option to select which playbook to use in the Team Select screen for a quick game. From here you would have to press the Y button to open the Options menu that allows you to change playbooks. I hope that helps.

Thanks. I just play them all the time so I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in. Great play calling posts btw. It makes me want to try out different teams, haha.
