Re: NBA 2k13 Impressions Thread
Got it last night, played quite a few hours and was pretty impressed.
Gameplay:
Plays with all the strengths of the demo-- can't tell if it's smoother or not but overall gameplay seemed pretty solid. I felt like a complete noob being destroyed repeatedly by the Rockets with my Warriors on All-Star Sim. Didn't feel like CPU was doing too much that was cheese, but did feel like I had to and was able to go to Curry a little too much. I eventually beat them with him going 25 points and 9 assists in 5 min quarters. I think I must have gotten better after that game because I had more distributed and realistic scoring against other teams.
Didn't see too many insane comebacks that I couldn't blame myself for. Only saw shotclock "cheese" a couple of times and didn't seem like a trend. Allstar Sim seems to play more like 2K12 with good sliders than stock 2K12 post patch.
Players felt a lot more like themselves than in 2K12. The Signature Skills really do add personality and encourage you to use the players in the right way. Shot releases also seemed better-- no more super slow David Lee mid-range jumper.
I was able to do things with Klay Thompson that were a bit unrealistic. While he does have a nice first step, I was able to pump fake and drive for vicious dunks a bit too often. I do like that I'm able to use him as he should be used even though he's rated 4 points lower than Harrison Barnes, who's just kind of okay at several things rather than elite in any.
Didn't like that I was helpless defensively underneath the basket, even with a defensive anchor and one of the better shot blockers in Andrew Bogut. There needs to be more contact down there and shots need to be affected when a guy is trying to lay it up over the trees.
CPU also gets way too many offensive rebounds. At least the super high jumping rebounding issue has been fixed for the most part. I love all the new rebound-tip-animations though. Makes the ball feel a bit more live.
Presentation:
Commentary is stellar-- even better than last years. Felt like the broadcast crew's analysis on the Warriors were spot on, from the Ellis trade, to Lacob's booing, to details about the new stadium, to injury concerns with Bogut, and overall culture change of the organization. Seemed like everything they said went just a little deeper and I really liked that Kerr was honest and Frank in his takes about organizations and players, even if they sounded like mild criticism. It's a great and realistic balance to Clark Kellogg who's understanding, likes everyone, and slightly sugarcoats everything. Less video-gamey and more like a real broadcast. I also liked how there's specific commentary for sig skills. It's delivered so naturally that I actually thought that they were part of commentary tailored for specific players. It's a brilliant fusion of enhanced gameplay and presentation.
Some early cons:
1. The Jay-Z presentation is actually kind of hilarious, just because it's so flipping shameless. The pre-game introductions feel like they're 2 parts Jay-Z, 1 part NBA. The good news is the gameplay itself does not feature much Jay-Z influence, so I'll be able to live with it all. However, never in a million years would I suggest 2K bring him back for a repeat appearance in 2K14.
Not sure I'm feeling the new promo announcer. He seems way too relaxed and not particularly hyped. Not horrible but I like (or at least got used to) the old guy.
Getting used to the gold frillies on the in game dialogue boxes, but *really* dislike what they did with the graphics and footage between quarters: ugly, gold heavy, frilly, volume bars going, speakers blaring-- surrounding a tiny window of on-court basketball footage. There was more interface than there was basketball and it managed to include everything anyone might dislike about the menus, take them to the next obnoxious level, and stick them all together to have them crowd out actual basketball.
Please bring back the old TNT broadcast package guy. Jay-Z can work on music and some pre-game intros-- maybe spice up MyPlayer. I'll be generous and even let him plaster his name on 2K Beats, but keep his grubby hands off everything else.
Graphics
Definitely improved all around, even if they didn't redo most heads from scratch. Something about the way they're lit just looks a bit more detailed and cleaner. Bodies also seem to have more texture and you can make out muscle definition a bit better than 2K12.
Sweat is definitely back in this year, but it's not quite up to the level of 2K11 sweat. Players do look a bit more wet late game and you can see it reflect on their skin. The reflections also show off skin texture and dimples, but the dimples sometimes look artificial-- almost like a grid. The amazing sweat trails of 2K11 are unfortunately absent. Reflections also aren't as white/bright as they should be. I would say the skin/sweat effects are somewhere between 2K11 and 2K12, which is a good improvement but not what it's been. The skin reflections really look good on Luol Deng and certain other dark skinned players for some reason.
This looks so bad I consider it a bug: when players go to the bench, they switch out to an ugly low-detail level of themselves right on court. This looks especially bad during free throws, and you can really see the pop. They shouldn't switch detail levels until they've hit the bench. This wasn't a problem in 2K12.Last edited by Sundown; 10-02-2012, 05:41 PM.Comment

I was hooked last night when playing a Nets v. Knicks game ans brewer rips Marshon at the FT extended and pushes up for the break with Crash trailing and I click to Crash and get a catch up block on the break, and it wasn't an armpit block a legit get up and smack your puny layup full extension block. After the ball goes out Crash celebrates the block. Man I was hype. With the game play and shoes (especially since people have found the trick for home away switching) this is great.
Also I love the "tightness" of controls on offense and D this year. I never felt like I lost control of my player, and more agile players FEEL more agile/fasterHELLO BROOKYLN.

I finally got my hands on the game for myself. I was getting false information and other members didn't understand what I was talking about. I give NBA the highest score possible. The ASW doesn't have to be HUMAN controlled. I'm having the most fun I have had in years, especially on the editing side of the game.Poe is an advocate for realistic boxing videogames.Comment

Yes. This. Even the intro was shameless. I had to wonder if it was a basketball game promo or a Jay-Z rap video I was watching. The subdued basketball montage almost seemed like fluff background graphics. The pre-game intro videos are nice, but not sure they feel like part of a broadcast promo package. Then again I've only seen the subdued, black and white ones.

Last part about player details going low res, I have seen that the past 2 years, it looks real ugly, maybe an oversight but it should be fixed.Comment

Re: NBA 2k13 Impressions Thread
Oh? I never noticed it happening right at the freethrow hash marks. It's really jarring this year for some reason, almost like the guy turns into someone else. Do the low-poly models just look that bad this year? Is it because there are no wrinkles in the low-poly jerseys so it looks especially bad on home players?Comment

Re: NBA 2k13 Impressions Thread
So far a few things are annoying me. And my cousin as well.
1) The CPU still is really cheap when behind. This in My Player. Multiple games we are winning big in the 3rd or 4th and the CPU manages some superhero type comebacks. I mean there are many games in the NBA where teams just simply play bad.
2) I don't like the cheap CPU in the shooting drill this year. I'm getting 2000-2400 pts and can't get Gold because players like Derozan and Rip Hamilton are God-like. Gimme a break 2K!
3) While the new controls are nice, it would've been nicer to let us choose to go back to last year's controls. Not a game killer but still annoying.
There were a few more gripes but unlike last year I won't be taking this back. I'm all in My Player so far."The Mind is a terrible thing to waste"Comment

Re: NBA 2k13 Impressions Thread
Quick Impressions: Javale Mcgee actually plays like Javale Mcgee....that means good stuff for us 2kers in the sim and realism department.
Ty Lawson is fast and uses his full array of floaters and trickery to command the floor, sounds like reality, that's because 2k is blurring the line right now and going all matrix on us.
Big men run the floor on the break and finally contact layups have a chance of going in, so players like j lin can ride the defender to the rim and make a difficult layup.
The new dribbling system is sick, if you dribble without thought, you aren't going anywhere, but pick the right move and the rim is wide open. The controls are demanding and have a steep learning curve but they give you a full arsenal of moves once you learn them.
Dwight Howard is ferocious and kobe has that real life I'ma get mine instinct.
More impressions to on the way later....Comment

Re: NBA 2k13 Impressions Thread
I'm sure it's to ensure the game runs smoothly. If every player on the court and bench were hi-res, it would probably create slow down or at least waste system resources that should be used for something more valuable than the resolution of a player returning to the bench.
It's not that important. Jarring, yes, but not important to find a solution. Maybe next generation."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: NBA 2k13 Impressions Thread
Team defense is a complete joke this year. You can spam lead passes into the paint simply by running into defenders on PnR plays because sooner or later the second defender will leaving his man, completely exposing the paint.
Help defense and rotations are almost useless and non existant. Feels like NBA Jam 2k13 to me.
Also, I know the idea behind this is quite stupid but the fact that it works really tells something about the way the game lacks real logic.
Take a good center like Dwight and move him to SG. You can prevent mismatches by assigning him to defend the opposing center.
But the AI wont't react, so by calling plays for him you create mismatches against guards all game long, because the AI assigns matchups simply by position, not taking into account player size or skill.
In other words, if you play the Bucks and move him to SG/PG, you have a matchup against Ellis or Jennnings all game long.Last edited by mango_prom; 10-02-2012, 06:07 PM.Comment

At the very least I think they should time the transition so that the players are already walking to the bench and aren't still standing at the hash marks in the middle of the screen.Comment
