    Re: Hex Editing Thread

I recently got my hands on a used ps3 and fired up 2k8...forgot how great this game was.

Is this project to delve into the roster files still alive, by any chance? I found this thread:

    https://www.simheads.com/threads/col...project.16251/

Looks like big things were on the horizon, and I may be able to offer some help, though I have no experience with hex files and wouldn't know where to begin.

At this point, I am primarily interested in extracting roster data from save files...this looks doable, though not really sure how I can contribute, or if anybody is even interested anymore.

It's most certainly doable, but I haven't invested much time into hex editing as of late. But tips on hex editing are definitely in this thread if you thoroughly look through it. I also have a thread on hex editing coaches.

Yeah I've read through the thread. Looks like you've accomplished quite a bit. Maybe you can indulge my inexperience for a moment.

When I open a roster file in HxD I see the hexadecimals and then the decoded text...but the decoded text is obviously encrypted.

Have you actually decrypted this...seems like you've been just making changes in-game and then locating the differences in a Hex editor by comparison so you know where to make your edits...or am I missing something?

I use bruteforce to decrypt the PS3 save file, if that's what you meant. I don't remember how I decrypt 360 files.

I must be missing something..BruteForce breaks the userdata file down into a number of dat files but when I open any of them in the hex editor I still get nothing recognizable in any of them...no familiar text, team names, etc...am I proceeding correctly?

EDIT: Just to clarify, I decrypted a PS3 roster save in Bruteforce and then opened it with a Hex editor (without closing BF)...and then I re-encrypted the file and simply went in to the save folder and opened up userdata directly in the Hex editor (without decrypting first) - the results were the same in both cases. There was no change to the contents...what I viewed in the hex editor was the same whether or not I decrypted with Bruteforce...so I am just trying to figure out what you were doing so I can get to the same spot you're at.

There's tutorials on how to decrypt saves using bruteforce, you shouldn't be getting day files. Also the team names, etc that are clear text are just cosmetic and don't really do anything but change how something may look, i.e. changing a conference name.

I've pretty much explained how I got and understood everything in the thread. I'm sorry if I don't feel like fully going through specific details. You just need to re read the thread and try editing around for yourself.

                Okay, thanks anyway.

UPDATE: For anybody interested, for some reason my save folder was marked read only. Unchecked and was able to decrypt the file.

Is there anyway to edit jerseys or the shot clock by chance? I have a super old Mac book so hex editing is pretty foreign to me

                        I don't believe there's a way to do either.

Has anyone tried loading up a CH2k8 roster or legacy file in any of the NBA 2k editors that are floating around?

I wonder if the editor can be used to change team info. For instance, I play with the default rosters, but Loyola (Chicago) doesn’t have their national championship listed. It’s a minor annoyance that if changed would be nice, and definitely help them recruit.

Also, I would basically change all the the information on ‘90 UNLV to match the default UNLV so I could play a legacy in their classic uniforms. It’s easy to switch the roster over, but none of the classic teams have any tournament data.

                                Nah, they're hardcoded.
