So if the Heat win a title this year, does that suddenly make Spolestra a good coach, or would he, at that point, still be "any old coach"? What about Rick Carlisle (who until last year was below .500 in the playoffs)? Since we equate winning a championship with being a good coach, every coach who's won the title is seemingly labeled with being a great coach. Even though all of them back to 1980 had a dominant superstar on their team (with the exception of the Pistons, who had 4 All-Stars instead). I'm not going to say I could go out there with say, the Heat, and win, but I do think a middle-of-the-road coach with a Superstar (or better yet, two), has a much better chance than a team with a deeper roster, but no true superstar, and a hall-of-fame coach.

And although the Brooklyn Nets are still considered the frontrunner, “it is not going to be a one-horse race,” the source said, listing the Mavericks, Knicks and — to a lesser degree — the Clippers and Lakers as among the destinations that would appeal to Howard.

            Re: The Dwight Howard Thread

Get ready for a long, drama-filled summer.

Dwight Howard still prefers a trade from the Magic, according to a source.
Orlando announced that the tenures of Stan Van Gundy and Otis Smith were over on Monday, but Howard still seeks a trade before the start of the season, according to the source.

The Nets are considered the frontrunner, but "it is not going to be a one-horse race,” the source said. The Mavericks and Knicks are also in the conversation, while the Lakers and Clippers are as well to a lesser extent.

Howard is eager to begin the next phase of his career and the Magic don't want a repeat of circumstances they endured during the 11-12 season.

Executives from the Magic are expected to meet with Howard soon and will accomodate his trade request should he ask for a trade.

The team that is able and willing to take back the contract of Hedo Turkoglu is likely to have an edge in trading for Howard.

That organization has been a joke for many many years

They need to trade him though because the damage has been done.

Clean house and rebuild because the current structure wont ever take you anywhere, and do it much longer, it wont even be the 1st round

No one is honestly surprised at this point right? We all knew this was going to happen the moment he signed on the dotted line.

Always thought it was silly to prolong this thing, however it gives them an offseason to see what kind of offers they get in. And teams may be willing to pony up more with a fresh off season to work on their rosters

The Magic have said they want an answer from Duhwight by the Draft. So I'm guessing he'll be on another team sometime after FA starts July 1.

No need for them to hold on to him until Training Camp if he's adament he's not staying.

Trade him, rebuild. Don't prolong this thing Orlando as you will only build a deeper hole by signing mediocre players with longer contracts.

Trade Dwight, include that bum Turk, and get young assets in return.

I think Orlando should talk to LAC about Griffin.

Dude Spo is not on the level Carlisle has been throughout his career. Carlisle didn't just suddenly become a good coach because he won a title, he was always a good coach. You certainly aren't about to sit here and try to pretend that Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Pop, Larry Brown etc. were average coaches or not good coaches but have been labeled great coaches simply because they won a title. It's a combination effort. You're not just going to win a title simply because you have a superstar otherwise there'd be more than three or four names in coaching with a title for the better part of two decades of NBA ball.

This whole discussion is pointless though cause you're missing the point of the topic. The Magic aren't morons because they're chosing a superstar over the head coach, they're morons because they're chosing a superstar who wants no part of their franchise over a really good coach. Dwight basically wants to/is dropping a grenade in the room and trying to walk out and leave them stuck in the room with it.
