I hope this ends with the Kings keeping the franchise and Seattle getting an expansion..
There isn't going to be expansion. That just isn't going to happen. It's going to come down to the NBA deciding whether they'd rather be in Sacramento or Seattle. They can't do both, at least not anywhere in the near future.

If the league does decide to expand that will put it at 31 teams. It will then have to make a choice to either say at 31 or add another team along with Seattle to make it 32.

Which is why that isn't happening. They can barely support the 30 they have, they aren't adding one or two more.

No. Only way for Seattle and Sacramento both having teams in 5 years is that 6 new teams enter the NBA (for 6 team divsions) or a Team Moves.

They are leaving to Seattle. The papers are signed and the agreement is legally binding, especially with $30m down. The BOG will approve the transaction. There's no way they suddenly set a precedence of rejecting who a team is sold to because they won't want the same to happen to them when they sell. Not to mention it opens the door to anti-trust lawsuits. They want Seattle's market in the Association. Stern has wanted Ballmer as an owner for years.

KJ's efforts are admirable, but ultimately too late to save the franchise as it now exists. 99% of that blame falls on the Maloofs, IMO. I think KJ getting Burkle involved is a great sign for Sacramento for the future. They need to get an arena plan in place and the NBA will return. They have the potential owners, they have the market size, they just need the arena. It's almost a carbon copy of the Seattle situation.

I thought Sacramento already has an arena plan in place.

Doesn't the current plan lack both private funding and approval of using any public funds (the parking garage plan)? At this point, it seems more like an idea, but maybe I'm wrong.

Have they truly solidified a site?

They had a plan developed and agreed upon. A couple months after the agreement, the Maloofs backed out.

I'm assuming that's still Sacramento's stadium proposal. And potential owner would have to sign off on it, obviously.

Correct, with the majority of the private funds coming from the NBA (Maloofs only had to contribute $7m).

The use of public funds was never approved though. Not to mention the city admitted they overestimated the value of leasing their parking garages to fund the arena and the additional money would have to come from elsewhere.

Now they are talking about a second site.

They may be in the planning stages, but they don't have a finalized plan that would give the NBA any kind of confidence.

It sucks for the people of Sacramento. Wish there was a different way of getting a team in Seattle.

Not a chance. They're blowing that organization up. The only guys that have a real good chance at hanging around are Cousins and Thomas.

And I would assume this team would be gutted regardless if they stay in Sacramento or move to Seattle. The Maloofs/Petrie have destroyed this club. We have a few pieces, but need some new direction to get the most out of the talent we do have.
It is. Take it from a fanbase that knows, the longer you hold onto the hope that they'll stay, the more it'll hurt when they don't. Sacramento is playing to impress the NBA in order to get the next franchise to move in a few years. When it gets to this point, it's going to get done. No way Hanson puts down a non-refundable $50 million deposit unless he has an assurance it's going to get done.

Re: Agreement for new Seattle arena reached

Seattle has a signed purchase agreement with an ownership group that the NBA desperately wants. I don't think there'd be any precedent for the NBA BOG to blow this up, bring the value of the franchise back down (worth less in Sac), and take away their own power to do what they want with their own franchise. This deal is literally everything except done.

As someone who hasn't been a big NBA video game fan for a long time....how easy would it be for me to buy 2k13 and relocate the Kings as the Sonics? Anybody have good instructions for this type of thing? Any chance I can use actual Sonics uni's or will this be a Madden-esque crude relocation with very limited options. Would love to get some advice as I'm on the edge about picking this game up to get pumped up and familiarize myself with a league I thought I had abandoned forever.
