The NBA does suffer from the lack of white players. The politically correct thing to say is that it doesn't matter. Sure it does. Yao Ming has all of china watching, and if there were a white american ballplayer of the ilk of T-Mac/AI/Kobe then the NBA would have through the roof ratings.

      <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

I disagree. If the NBA had a better product then they would have through the roof ratings like they did in the 80's and early 90's. Let's face it, expansion and players coming out too early have led to a watered down league. Factor in inconsistent officiating, and the fact that few teams push the ball up the court, and it's just not a fun game to watch any longer. Seems like 90% of the teams walk the ball up the court, and then run a 2 man game where they dump it in and force a shot, or dump it in then pass it back out and force a 3 ball. Or they run some iso play while the rest of the team stands around and watches.

The NBA's recent decline in ratings has nothing to do with whiteness, it's been a sport dominated by blacks for some time. It's decline in popularity is due to the fact that it's almost unbearbable to watch for most people. I was a huge NBA fan for a long time, but I could count on one hand how many games I watched this year. I find myself being drawn to watching the college games more during basketball season these days.

      <hr /></blockquote><font class="post">

Amen, my friend. IMO, the NBA hasn't suffered so much from expansion as they have from high school mega stars who can fly from the free throw line and jam with three hands but can't knock down a consistent 15 foot jumper. Also, where are the days of teams playing good solid defense and the score still having both teams around 120? Nowadays, a defensive team can hold a championship caliber team to 68 points in the Finals? That, in my opinion, is to blame for the ratings drop and not the white ratio.

However, I do agree with those who feel corporate America is looking for a white star. However, I don't believe it is totally tied into racism. I feel it's more of the level of a Tiger Woods in golf. He was marketable for three good reasons: 1. He has a clean image 2. He's damn good 3. He's different from what you traditionally see in the sport. Remember the Jason Williams phenomenom (sp?) a few years back? Now imagine if you have a player like him with better talent and less negative character flaws. Money.

Oh yeah, I'm not a white American, but I am a black American... close enough?

In general, you can still say that Black people will root for the Williams sisters, white people still cheer louder for the white heavyweight contender, and hispanics look up to their ballplayers/athletes.

QBs drive the NFL. Peyton Manning, Brett Favre, Tom Brady, McNabb, Vick, McNair. But the day you see black qbs starting on 20-30 teams is the day that tvs are being turned to something else in many homes.

What I presented was a hypothetical scenario, that I don't believe the NFL will allow happen.

Look, do you ever wonder why fringe sports (America) are starting to gain tremendous popularity (soccer, lacrosse, college baseball, NASCAR). Look at the participants, then look at the crowd, what do you see that's similar? Listen to the music that's being played, smell the food that's being cooked on grills. Obviously a group of people have identified with the players and have made the game a cultural event.

YOu want to see it in reverse, go to one of these street ballers/mix tape events. Look at the particpants and look at the crowds, listen to the music.

Say what you want about women's tennis, but I couldn't name 5 female tennis players not named Williams or Capriati. But the only non-white people I see at tennis matches in the crowd are the families of the Williams' sisters. How do you explain that? Hmmm...maybe they just enjoy the sport.

White people didn't shun Andre Agassi when his hair was wild and he wore colors other than white at Wimbeldon.

It may be a suprise to you, but most people listen to music that they identify with culturally. How much rap/r&amp;b do your hear at Nascar events? How much country do you hear at NBA games? In many schools, you have the kids returning to separate proms (black/white), in effect de facto segregation.

In general, you can still say that Black people will root for the Williams sisters, white people still cheer louder for the white heavyweight contender, and hispanics look up to their ballplayers/athletes.

You may like D. McNabb/Vick but there are just as many who don't. We all had the opportunity to hear them come out hiding when Rush Limbaugh made his comments.

Every NBA game that I've attended, there's been nothing but "suits" at the games, regardless of race. White people have not stopped coming to games since Larry Johnson wore gold fronts, Allen Iverson cornrowed his hair and Dennis Rodman tatooed his whole body.

And I don't know where you were trying to go with that "smell the food that's being cooked at these events" comment.

Exactly. In fact, I'm only 25 years old but prefer to listen to Classic Rock from the 60's and Rap/R&amp;B. I don't see how I identify with either of them culturally to tell you the truth. If you're going to make bold statements, at least have some reasoning to back them up.
