how sad is it that a team coming off another #1 pick might be our best option

edit: just realized the Tigers didn't actually have the #1 pick, weird

Well, I know the Wings are in rebuild mode and have a good GM under them now, so the dark age of Detroit Hockey might be over soon? But yeah, cursed existence we have.

Yeah hopefully Stevie Y is the savior, I was stoked to get him. Hopefully he wasn't the Dumars of hockey and lucked into success

We are potentially in the midst of the worst era of Detroit pro sports in history. When has it ever been worse? Maybe the 1970's? There is literally no reason to watch any of Detroit's pro teams.

I can't even bring myself to care what moves the Pistons are making any more. I long ago stopped believing there was any plan for the team outisde of moving them to downtown Detroit. Gores has no idea what he's doing and probably doesn't care. The 'Stones are a lost cause.

The Tigers are probably going to be in rebuild mode for a decade or more, so we're back to the 90's-2000's with that team.

The Wings are still early in their teardown process, so it's going to be a long haul there even if Stevie Y is the franchise savior everyone is hoping he is.

Don't even talk to me about the Lions.

So, yeah....it's a good time to be working 80+ hours a week. I'm missing nothing.

forget Detroit, has ANY city had a stretch of pro teams being this bad simultaneously?

Good points. Hard to think of one off the top of my head. Philadelphia in the 90's? Nothing really comes to mind. Dark days in Motown.

They should adopt the nickname "Lottery City" until such time as things turn around.

Pistons hire Troy Weaver from the Thunder to be their GM. Seems like a good choice, but I can't say I know much of anything about him.

My bar is pretty low for this offseason. Take the best player available in the draft, resign Christian Wood (might have to go just over the MLE salary to keep him) and use the remaining cap space to take back bad deals in return for draft picks, like they did with Tony Snell last season.

If Griffin and Rose stay healthy and the team ends up as a playoff bubble team, that's great, but the primary focus should be on development while accumulating assets the next few seasons.

Yes, I know nothing about Troy Weaver whatsoever, but obviously I hope he does a great job. At least the organization finally decided that the "no GM" strategy wasn't really the best.

Gores has been the Pistons owner for 9 years now. I know that no one will ever be as great of an owner as Bill Davidson was, but I can't see how Gores' ownership of the team has been anything other than an unmitigated disaster. I will grant him that the first 3-4 years, he was hamstrung by legacy deals and bad overall player management prior to his acquisition of the team, but at this point, every aspect of the team is fully his doing. Even if you disregard the utter futility and aimlessness of his tenure as team owner, the most damning thing is that now, almost a decade into his ownership, the team is arguably worse off than it ever has been before. This is the most direction-less franchise with the worst roster and least amount of future/developing talent in the league, and second place isn't even close. There is no reason to invest 1 second of attention in this team, even for the most die-hard of fans.

At this point, I wouldn't re-sign anyone on the roster. Christian Wood is a good player and I hope he goes on to success somewhere, but we're not building around him and even if we tried, by the time we acquired enough talent to be relevant, he'd be past his prime. We're a decade away from relevance, and that's if we do everything right. Which we probably won't.

I wouldn't pay $1 to watch this Pistons roster play a game. Heck, if they were playing in my backyard, I wouldn't even open up my blinds to watch. I have been with this franchise through the good ol' days of the Bad Boys, the horrible teal horse-head era, the resurgence with the Goin'-to-Work teams, and the absolutely wretched transition from Karen Davidson [spits on the ground] to Gores, and I'm still with them now. But there's no reason to pay attention to anything they do for at least another 4-5 years. Wake me when there's a team worth watching here.

The teal era reminds me of the best player we ever had

I have a soft spot for that time, I still use those unis on 2K

Zeke was amazing, and I totally understand the argument, but I really feel Grant was the best player... I'm just gonna cut myself off there because it's a pointless discussion and there's only a handful of people that read this subsection anyway

Yeah, and we won't reach agreement on that. I actually don't think Grant is in the top-3 greatest Pistons, although I love the guy to death.

Grant Hill is sort of the Anakin Skywalker of the Pistons (without the turning evil part...although he did go over to another side e.g. not the Pistons), in that he indirectly brought order to the universe (delivering a Pistons title) in a very roundabout way. The sign-and-trade to Orlando that brought Ben Wallace and Chucky Atkins back in return was, in retrospect, one of the most important things that happened to the franchise in the last 20 years. Sort of stretch of an analogy, I guess, but I'm sticking with it...

Neither am I, actually. I don't know why that analogy sprang to mind, but I've never been a huge fan.

I suppose we'll have to wait a while for the draft, but any early opinions on who we should take? I think this draft has the potential to be horrible looking back in 5 years, but then, no one knows anything (as someone famously once said....).
