Oh yeah, but with today's boxing that match probably won't happen until 2018.

Nothing in the NBA that I can prove in any rigorous fashion, but I was foisting my own opinion into the discussion. Highly subjective/speculative on my part, so take my comments with a grain of salt. But the NBA is the only major (US) sports league that I'm aware of that had a referee admit that he influenced the outcomes of games in the interest of bettors and the league. Yes, Tim Donaghy is not the most reliable guy, but anyone that saw the 2002 Western Conference Finals game 6 can't possibly rule out the allegations completely...And the NBA always seems to have some air of in-authenticity surrounding its outcomes in my own opinion - i.e. the Draymond Green suspension seemingly timed to extend the series, etc.

But back on-topic (despite the title of this thread )...De la Hoya is bad, but he's just the latest in a long line of scoundrels, con-men, and criminals to control the sport. It's best not to invest, to be honest - I'll get excited about the occasional good fight, but at the end of the day, it's a sideshow in my sporting landscape. If I was any more invested, I would just be ticked off too much to ever enjoy it.
yeah, soccer also had many referee-manipulation scandals, f.e. itialian top-clubs were downgraded and had to leave the 1st league or a german referee went to prison for manipulating games.

back to boxing .... another thing which kinda pissed me off recently was about haye and briggs. Haye talks and talks, we both will fight, haye makes a contract for briggs and briggs had to sign the contract 5 times (!) coz haye in the end was simply not interested to fight Briggs anymore. What is wrong here? Does Haye suck (well, yeah he does, was it the revanche for Briggs stalking him) ?

It wasn't a mandatory fight, obviously Briggs was stalking Haye to fight him, but such things are just bad for boxing. A Deal should be a Deal.

Definitely. Seems like a lot of the close competitive fights have been on regular tv lately

Good fight. I thought Frampton threw the more telling blows and deserved the victory. Despite some good shots landed throughout, the only "hurt rattling" punch came in round two when Frampton landed a quick left hook on the temple that clearly staggered Santa Cruz.

Mickey Garcia looked real good after a 2.5 year layoff. I hope he goes to 140 (I think he weighed in at 137 for this bout) but I think he'll settle in at lightweight, at least for a while.

Gary Russel's smack talk is pretty lame, but I'd like to see him fight either Frampton or Santa Cruz.

                    I hope so.
But Stevenson basically ran from a Kovalev fight in 2013:
Sergey Kovalev needs a bigger challenger for his next fight, and fellow titleholder Adonis Stevenson would seem to fit the bill. But HBO, Kovalev's network, is blocking the potential fight, a move which will only hurt the broadcaster in the long run.

Since taking the WBC version of the 175-pound title from Chad Dawson in 2013, Stevenson has placed the belt in protective custody. A banner, Fighter of the Year ’13 was followed by an abysmal ’14, with a pair of title defenses against inferior opponents. His ducking of Kovalev became comical; an HBO fighter throughout all of ’13, Stevenson reneged on a handshake agreement to fight Kovalev in early ’14, signed with Al Haymon and fled to Showtime. He has long claimed he wanted the fight but his actions are those of a man who wants nothing to do with it.
But he's 38 now and I'm sure he wants to get paid before retiring so this fight is more appealing than it was 3 years ago.

However, it appears HBO is the one blocking this bout.
I can't say I blame them as Stevenson has done very little to keep his name in the public eye. Aside from the recent Williams fight, he hasn't looked all that impressive.
Why would HBO want to share revenues with Showtime when it's their fighter that is the attraction and has the most to lose.

As Jaybee said, I'm sure the fight will eventually take place, but probably not until one, or both fighters are a long way from their primes.
Maybe they'll be on the Yellow Alvarez-Triple-G undercard in 2020.

Adonis does have that one punch KO power but he's losing his cred if he isn't willing to fight at least the likes of Jean Pascal.

Just read a boxingnews24 article where the author opines that Roc Nation should have gotten Joe Smith or Beterbiev as Andre Ward's "tuneup" for Kovalez instead of setup Alexander Brand. So you're going to risk a multi million payday with Kovalez to fight the guy that just took off Fonfara's head (Smith) or the guy that resembles a tank (Beterbiev) who hits like a miniature Mike Tyson? The article continues with describing it as a missed opportunity for Ward to create more interest for himself-you have to be kidding me. I'm not saying Ward couldn't beat these guys (although I wouldn't bet the farm against Beterbiev) but why risk it?

Precisely. What an asinine thing to say.
Sure, as fans, I'd love to see all of them fight each other in a weekend.
But noway a smart manager allows Ward to risk a huge payday by taking on either beast in a 'tune-up' fight.

I want to see the winner of this bout fight Stevenson, and then go after both Smith and Beterbiev.
Beterbiev is such an entertaining fighter, I hope becomes a house-hold name.

Ward's style and skill is always interesting to watch so I'll be tuned in tomorrow. (HBO)

Since we're talking light heavyweights this always cracks me up-perfect timing from Sergey.

According to Chris Mannix via Twitter Felix Verdejo is being treated for head trauma after a motorcycle accident in Puerto Rico.
