interesting. My thoughts were that I was wondering why I want Kovalev to win, then I remembered all the fights canelo had as the bigger guy for titles in a weight division below him and above his foe's.

BUT. If Canelo wins...wouldn't that open the door to the amazing possiblity of him fighting BETERBIEV????? that would be dope!

but to your point - he would get a pass I think, even from some that are less reasonable when you look at the facts - moving up 2 weight divisions to fight - not a journeyman - but a champ without a tune-up or anything like that. It IS a risk.

To my point, it's almost worse if he WINS because everyone will clamour for the Artur fight - and THAT is super dangerous.

So maybe Canelo has turned a corner and said to himself "I want to go down as one of the all-time best there ever was" . at his age, there are a lot of great super fights possible while he's still lacing them up.

Great points and I think Beterbiev would destroy him-He would shake off Alvarez's counter-punches and finish him with those short vicious 6-inch punches.

LOL, they just weighed in and Kovalez had to lose his shorts and still weighed in at 175.2-he has an hour to get down to 175.

Turns out there is a rehydration clause afterall (big surprise).
Neither fighter can weigh more than 185 at noon tomorrow.
No wonder Canelo is the betting favourite.
This guy won’t take a fair fight.
He either picks on someone past his prime or out of his comfortable weight.
After this, he needs to fight the best guys at 160.
If he wins and wants to defend at 175, we all know who he needs to fight.

I know I am late to the conversation but I definitely knew that something was up. Him wanting to challenge Kovalev was completely out of left field. Completely calculated.

Yup. I was ready to give him credit for moving up two weight classes without any strings.
But that’s on me. Canelo has a long history of adding clauses and strings to many of his fights. He and DLH have done an amazing job working the angles and setting up fights that heavily favour Canelo.
Why would tonight’s fight be any different.

Of course he was at a disadvantage in a catch-weight bout with Mayweather.

Jacobs was similarly disadvantaged as Kovalez but took a significant financial hit to come in 3-4 pounds over the determined re-hydration weight.

Wonder what the per-pound financial penalty is for Kovalez? Not verified but Kovalez apparently has a second re-hydration restriction of 190 pounds at FIGHT TIME!!

                  Re: Boxing Off-Topic

I got DAZN for this and I've got a 2 TV setup currently watching UFC and this one at the same time.

20/mo w/ free trial, cancel anytime - not too big of a risk haha.

regarding the dehydration clause - a cool thing would be if Kovalev was like 'eff it, let's lose a big %, but I'm going to KRUSH HIM!!!" haha, doubt it - but we'll see - no matter what this is a very exciting fight for me. If Canelo wins, I hope he's pressured into fighting Artur because I agree, he would get his arse kickd.

most embarrassing, egregious delay I've ever witnessed in sports. I will never forgive DAZN - it seems like a golden boy + dazn strategy ---- if that turns out to be the case, omg, I will spam for all eternity. It's 1:15am eastern, not even both guys in the effing ring yet.

rd 8, kovalev done imo, I'm going to bed - he's potentially winning, but not dangerous anymore.

                      very disappointing night by DAZN.

I don't think he was ever dangerous in this fight. Too cautious with flick jabs but he probably had to be because of counters. Serious ending shots by Canelo.

Kovalez needs to take his huge payday and run but he's talking about coming back.

They waited for that MMA fight to be over but still inexcusable.

Canelo deserves credit for winning this fight. He bided his time and let Krusher get tired and then unleashed.

Saying that, I want to see Alvarez fight the #1 contender or fellow champ at either 160, 168 or 175 who isn’t old, or damaged and without any weight restrictions.
It seems he is always targeting fights that have an angle of some kind.
If he fights and beats Artur, then he deserves full props for beating someone in their prime.

                              But enough of cherry picking.
All those rehydration clauses on Kovy ensured the two would be close in weight with Alvarez not having to lose strength.
I wonder how he would have fairer at 154 if every fight featured clauses that forced him to enter the ring under 160lbs, instead of enjoying a 10-15 pound weight advantage in every fight?

Just asking. Did Mayweather have a rehydration stipulation for Canelo? If so, seems like he is definitely taking pages out of the Mayweather book of fight choosing. Atleast similarities.
