Re: The career of a man named Lynn - RTTS

    5/8/11

Today is the final game of the homestand and due to a shortage of pitchers, I am asked to come in in the top of the 12th inning against the Barons with the bases loaded and two outs. After taking my warmup pitches, I get the first batter I face to fly out to end the threat. One of our guys hits a walkoff home run in the bottom of the 12th and the Suns win, 4-3.

After the game, the manager took me aside again and told me that I showed a lot of poise coming in and putting out the fire. It was a game changing moment.

    Code:

Re: The career of a man named Lynn - RTTS

      5/9/11

I make my regular start as we start the road trip visiting the Mississippi Braves. I'm beginning to feel like Hudini as I make escape after escape during the game. I allowed a whopping 11 hits but the Braves only had 3 runs, 2 of them on a home run by #32 in the 5th, to show for it and I was lifted after 7 innings for a pinch hitter with the score 3-1 Mississippi. The Suns scored two runs in the 9th and two runs in the 10th to take the lead but the Braves came back with 3 runs in the bottom of the 10th to win, 6-5. At the plate I went 0-1 with a sacrifice bunt.

After the game, the manager told me that he appreciates the great effort I am making in getting the bunts down for him whenever he asks me to do it. Today's sacrifice bunt was my third in two starts. In my previous start I laid down two sacrifice bunts and whacked a seeing-eye single up the middle.

        5/13/11

My manager called me into the office this morning and told me that my latest goal session has ended. I had done a good job and achieved 4 of the 5 goals.

He also told me that he had just gotten off the phone with the Dodgers' GM before I arrived. The news almost floored me!!! My manager informed me that I was to clean out my locker and take the first flight available to Los Vegas, Nevada! I have been promoted to the triple-A affiliate there, the Las Vegas 51s. Upon arrival, I am to report to the manager and meet with the pitching coach there.

After the long flight I headed straight for the ball park for my meeting with my new manager and pitching coach. I was told at the meeting that I was going to start off as a long reliever.

        My New Goals
        Code:
        1. Increase stamina over the next 5 series
        2. Increase durability over the next 5 series
        3. Increase H/9 attribute over the next 5 series
        4. Allow 3 or less earned runs
        5. Record 1 or more holds
        6. Have a WHIP lower than 1.330

I had asked the equipment manager if I could have the number 30 for my uniform and was told that it wasn't available so I am now wearing the number 36.

Tonight was my 51s debut and was called in to pitch in the top of the 5th inning with 2 outs, a man on first and 3 runs already in this inning against the Iowa Cubs. I got the first batter I faced to ground out to the second baseman to end the inning and the threat. I was lifted in the bottom of the 5th for a pinch hitter so my debut was a short, but successful, one.

          Code:
                         1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E

I'm right back on the mound for a second straight day as I am summoned from the bullpen in the top of the 5th inning with 2 outs, runners on 1st and 2nd and we are behind 3-0 as we are currently being no-hit. I fanned the first batter I faced to end the threat but then proceeded to give up a few hits and two runs in the top of the next inning. I left in the bottom of the 8th inning for a pinch hitter. We were able to scratch out a couple of runs in the bottom of the 8th but we lose again to the Iowa Cubs, 5-2. (Welcome to the PCL, Mr. Ryan!)

After having the night before off I am called upon again in our last game of the series against the Iowa Cubs. I am summoned in the top of the 9th with 1 out, the bases loaded and two runs in as we are trailing 5-1. I get the first batter to foul out to the third baseman and the next batter to fly out to end the inning and strand the bases full of Cubs. We didn't score in the bottom half of the 9th and the 51s lost, 5-1. We now head out on my first road trip with the team as we head out to take on Salt Lake and then Tacoma.

We are in the state of Utah to take on the triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Salt Lake Bees. I am called on to pitch in the bottom of the 4th with 1 out and a man on 1st with us trailing 3-0. I got the first hitter to foul out with me making the catch in the first base coach's box after calling off the catcher while the first baseman stayed at the base. I struck out the next hitter to end the inning. I allowed a lead-off blast in the bottom of the 5th and scattered hits as we scored a solo run in the top of the 8th and three more in the top of the 9th to tie the game, 4-4. In the last half of the 9th, I gave up a double to the first hitter and he ended up scoring on a hit off the wall in right after a ground out had held him.

We are now in Tacoma facing the Seattle Mariners' triple-A team, the Tacoma Rainiers. I am called upon to put out another fire in the bottom of the 5th with 1 on, 1 out and Tacoma leading 4-3. The first batter I face grounds into an inning-ending double play then I only give up two hits in another two innings and was lifted for a pinch hitter in the top of the 8th and the score tied, 4-4. We score two runs in the top half of the 8th and hold on for the win, 7-5, my first as a 51ser.

As we head for home my manager pulls me aside and tells me that I am a real rally killer and he appreciates the good work in coming into a game and stranding opposing base runners.

We are now back home and hosting the Tucson Sidewinders. With the score 2-1 in favor of Tucson, I am called in to start the 7th inning. I allow a solo home run of the pole down the line in right by #12. That was it as I strike out a batter in my only inning of work as I am lifted for a pinch hitter. We ended up losing, 5-2 and I am now being asked to be a middle reliever instead of a long reliever.

The same two teams square off again and I am asked to come in in the top of the 6th with one on and no outs. I stranded the base runner then allowed only two hits in my next two innings and I ended up being lifted for a pinch hitter with the score knoted up at 5-5. The 51s ended up losing in 14 innings, 7-5.

It's the third game of the series and I am summoned in the 7th inning with 1 on, 2 out and we're winning 3-1. I stranded the runner and gave up 1 hit, fanning 2, in my only inning of work and I am lifted for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 7th. We go on to win by that same score and I get my first hold of the season.

Now I can see why they wanted me to build up my stamina and my durability. I am called upon to start the top of the 7th inning, my fourth straight day of use, and I no-hit the Sidewinders for two innings and I leave with the score 6-0, Tucson. The Sidewinders tack on three runs in the top of the 9th and went on to win the game 9-0.

If there's a game, I must be pitching. Today is the start of the series against the Fresno Grizzlies and you guessed it, I'm summoned in. I get the call to enter the game in the top of the 6th with 2 out and a man on first. We are trailing in this game, 3-2. I get us out of the inning then allow two hits over the next two innings before I leave the game for a pinch hitter in the bottom of the 8th with us still trailing 3-2. Our offense comes alive and scores four runs as the 51s take the lead and our closer comes in and shuts the door as we win, 6-3. I picked up my second win of the season.

                              Code:
                                             1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E

I think that I have a ways to go yet before cracking the seal and make my debut in "The Show". Thanks for the kind words. I doubt that I will go up there for a "cup of coffee" this season but who knows what the future may bring for me in 2012.
