Coach Matthews must have said or done some pretty harsh things in the extended time off after the Ospreys last game against UNC Asheville, because they came out like someone had lit a fire under them. North Florida put up 54 points in just the first half, led by their leader who has struggled all year Brent Wood. Wood had 17 points in the half, one shy of his season high for a whole game.

Wood still hasn't found his touch from the floor, but he did manage to put up a season high 29 points. He also went 11 for 11 from the free throw stripe, where he is now 36 for 38 on the season. Emerson Riley also had a good game, coming off of his last start where he shot 2 for 11 from the floor, which isn't expected coming from the career average of over 59% from the floor.

The Orange have now lost 3 of their last 4, and 3 of their 5 losses have come at home. The Ospreys, who are #2 in the mid-major poll behind Gonzaga, take on Butler this Thursday. The Bulldogs, who are #10 on the mid-major poll, are 7-1 on the year with their only loss coming against a 7-1 Bradley team on the road.

    Coach Matthews’ Minute
“That's more like it. If we lost to a team that has an orange dance around at halftime I would have had to shoot myself.”

They say defense wins championships, and that point was very valid tonight. The Ospreys forced 18 turnovers against Butler, while only committing 2 themselves. They also managed to hold the Bulldogs to just 3/17 from beyond the arc.

Offensive production was magnificent for the Ospreys as well. The re-emergence of Brent Wood these past two games has shown just how dangerous this team could be in March if he gets his stroke back. Wood scored 27 points tonight, while shooting 5 for 11 from 3-point range, his best percentage of the season.

North Florida has a small chance at finally making their first top 25 appearance in the near future. They are 8-1 on the season, won their only game against a top 25 team, and their early season RPI currently sits at 6. They take on a very good Purdue team led by Robbie Hummel, Etwan Moore, and Jajuan Johnson next week on the road. If they come away victorious in that game, they should be in the Top 25 no question.

          Coach Matthews’ Minute
“It's about time Wood starts stroking it. He just needed to shoot it a little faster and he would have been doing this all season.”

I'm really enjoying this and I'm glad you came back to updating it. I like that you're being selective with what school you choose to go to next -- that's the best way to do it when you're enjoying the team you're building.

The Ospreys pulled out another shocking upset on this cold, Christmas evening. They have now beaten teams from the Big 10, Big 12, Big East, and SEC all on the road this season. The only other non-conference obstacle in their path before conference play is a very good, ranked Texas A&M team on the road.

Tonight's game showcased some of Coach Matthews' coaching ability. While the Ospreys tend to use the same rotations every game, tonight it took something different to beat a Boilermaker team that could make a run at the Final Four this year. The first half was dominated by Purdue, despite what the score might suggest. Every time North Florida chipped away at the lead someone would knock down a huge shot to keep the home team on top.

In the second half, Matthews made the adjustments. With Riley and Dancy in foul trouble, he went small by putting in two shooting guards, and Austen Kowalczuk at the PF position along with Rivera and Monceaux. He then took advantage of this speed by pressing after every made basket, which led to 14 second half turnovers by the slower Boilermaker squad.

Kowalczuk had to be the player of the night, despite a terrific offensive performance by Dancy. Kowalczuk was averaging just over 7 minutes per going into the game, but was on the floor for 26 minutes against Purdue. The freshman held his own, scoring a big 12 points to lead the Osprey's bench.

                      75

Here's some numbers from tonight's game. The Aggies shot 56% from the floor, the Ospreys shot 42%. The Aggies shot 50% from behind the arc, the Ospreys shot 25%. The Aggies out rebounded the Ospreys 32-26. If you saw those numbers, you wouldn't believe me when I told you that North Florida dominated the game from start to finish.

What happened, you ask? The Ospreys turned the ball over 4 times, the Aggies turned the ball over 29 times. Fresh off of using the experimental full court defense against Purdue that worked so well, the Ospreys length and speed gave Texas A&M even worse fits. All of the turnovers led to North Florida taking 72 shots compared to the Aggies 43. Everyone knows that the Ospreys can score, but if their defense is this still this incredible in March, teams will NOT want to be playing against them.

The Ospreys keep pushing for the top 25 spot, getting rejected once again this week heading into this game. Their RPI in the weekly rankings was 4, so it seems the pollsters have something against North Florida. If they aren't in after this win against a #11 team on the road, something is very, very wrong.

                      Coach Matthews’ Minute
“I guess the Aggies learned that the ladies were lying to them when they said that size didn't matter.”

Last season North Florida finished 13-3 against A-Sun opponents, winning their last 10. The season before that the Ospreys also finished 13-3 in conference play. This year doesn't look to be any different, the North Florida Ospreys are going to dominate this conference and they proved that tonight.

They absolutely destroyed a Belmont team that was projected to finish in the top 3 or 4 of the conference this season. With that said, they were supposed to be a top 6 team last year and they finished 11th with a 4-12 record. Either way, if this is one of the better teams the A-Sun has to offer, North Florida is going to go undefeated the rest of the way.

Brent Wood had a strong showing scoring 25 points. This is just his 3rd time scoring over the 20 point mark this season, after averaging 28.3 PPG last year. This year that number is at 16.9, and he is 3rd on the team in scoring behind Dancy and Emerson Riley. That number will probably rise during conference play, as the Ospreys played arguably the hardest non-conference schedule in the country.

Another game, another win. The Ospreys have completely dominated on their road trip, and now they only have one more before they get to head home for a couple of conference games.

The Ospreys have certainly made their case for a Top 25 bid when the new polls come out in a couple of days. It seems almost impossible with their resume this season that they wouldn't be ranked at this point. With a 12-1 record, beating multiple top 25 teams on the road, having a top 5 RPI......if they don't make it in you can expect a rant from Chris Matthews.

Ospreys Continue to be Disrespected by Polls
                                January 4, 2011

Jacksonville, FL - Once again, North Florida has been shunned by the pollsters. They have one of the most impressive resumes in all of college basketball, yet no one has even given them votes for the national top 25 polls. If they were part of a power conference, there is no doubt that they would be ranked in the top 5, maybe even top 3.

Coach Matthews has built the Ospreys into a legitimate championship contender. They have the 4th best RPI in the country. They have the most efficient offense in the country. They are the only team that can say that they are 3-0 against Top 25 teams in the country. They're only loss was one of the most questionably called games of the year. Where they managed to force overtime before losing to Florida St. in a game where the Seminoles shot 43 free throws.

Matthews is sure to play the "We have a chip on our shoulder" card, which is perfect for his personality. The Ospreys are also being left out in the mid-major poll. They still sit at #2, despite Gonzaga losing 2 home games the final week of December.

                                Mid-Major Poll Top 5, Week of November 22, 2010
                                1. Gonzaga (11-4)
                                2. North Florida (12-1)
                                3. Pepperdine (12-2)
