Nothing exciting in this one. North Florida dominated, as expected. A lot of garbage time in the 2nd half for the back up players to get some minutes. Emanuel Dancy did finally find his groove again, putting up 24 points to lead all scorers.

This sets up a conference showdown between North Florida (8-0) and second place Lipscomb (7-1) this Saturday. Lipscomb has surprised everyone, as they were projected to finish 5th or 6th in the conference. They have already beaten both Jacksonville and Florida Gulf Coast on the road, and get to host the Ospreys, who haven't lost at home this season.

    Coach Matthews’ Minute
“All this and we're only HALF WAY through the conference season? Good lord the boredom during these games is unimaginable.”

      Atlantic Sun Halfway Point Report
      February 28, 2011

      Surprises
Lipscomb - Was expected to be 4th or 5th in conference, but now they are in solid place to finish 2nd. A win over North Florida would be huge for them.
Emanuel Dancy - The North Florida sophomore had a decent season last year, but was hidden by Brent Wood's amazing performance. Dancy has stolen some of the thunder with Wood's struggles.
SC Upstate - Already has 5 conference wins, after finishing 2-14 in conference last year. They are led by the surprising Josh Chavis, who is a contender for the A-Sun player of the year.

      Disappointments
Brent Wood - It's hard to call 17 ppg disappointing, but when you scored 28+ last season it is. We were expecting him to go out with a bang, contending for national player of the year. He is less than 100 points away for 2500 on his career, though.
Belmont - Expected to be a top 4 finisher, has done terribly in conference play.

      League Leaders
      Points Per Game
      Adnan Hodzic (LU) - 19.6
      Emerson Riley (UNF) - 17.8
      Josh Chavis (USCU) - 17.6
      Brent Wood (UNF) - 16.9
      Emanuel Dancy (UNF) - 16.9

      Rebounds Per Game
      Preston Dodson (CAM) - 10.9
      Nate Blank (GWU) - 9.8
Jean Francois Monceaux (UNF) - 9.5
      Emerson Riley (UNF) - 9.1
      Justin Davis (MER) - 8.3

      Assists Per Game
      Junior Rivera (UNF) - 7.6
      Ervin Nutter (STET) - 6.5
      Cole Dewey (CAM) - 5.4
      Josh Chavis (USCU) - 5.3
      Jimmy Oden (LU) - 4.8

What to look for the rest of the season...
--The North Florida/Lipscomb match-up tomorrow is by far the most anticipated game of the remaining schedule. No one has gotten close to stopping the Ospreys, can Adnan Hodzic lead Lipscomb to a huge upset? Anthony Brower, their starting PF, will miss the game due to his injury.

--The battle for 3rd place. This one is HUGE. There are three teams tied for it right now, but several others are still in the running. 3rd place would guarantee the team to not have to play the Ospreys until the conference championship if they meet in the tournament.

It's unlikely that anyone actually thought Lipscomb would win this game, but a lot of people were certainly hoping that they would. In a clash of the top two teams in the A-Sun, someone just wants to watch the big bad wolf fall.

The Bison certainly did their best in this one, especially considering the lack of production from Adnan Hodzic and the lack of their 3rd leading scorer Anthony Brower. They kept it close all throughout the first half, and even held a lead for a short time in the second half. The lead was 6 with around 7:05 remaining when Brent Wood, who had a very quiet night, hit a very big three.

From that point on the Ospreys went on to cruise to victory, led by Emerson Riley. Riley finished the game with 33 points and 11 boards, dominating Hodzic while he was in the game.

        Coach Matthews’ Minute
“I'm on my way to Bison championship gear for us now. HA HA HA, get it? Bison, buy some.”

Not much of a contest was expected, and one wasn't really given. The Fighting Camels just didn't have anything going for them, and couldn't do anything against North Florida in this one. Campbell hasn't been able to put it together this season, despite starting 5 seniors. The one bright side for them in this game was Jose Cami, who put up 24 points against the Ospreys.

          Coach Matthews’ Minute

Emerson Riley slams it home for his 42nd and 43rd points, a new North Florida record.

USC Upstate has improved greatly over last season, particularly thanks to starting 5 seniors. They didn't quite have enough to keep up with the North Florida Ospreys though. They tried to slow the game down, and did a decent job for 3/4ths of the game, before Emerson Riley and his teammates took control.

The Spartans managed to keep it reasonably close the majority of the game, and even kept it to a single digit lead for the Ospreys for the first 12 minutes of the second half. It all fell apart from there, when North Florida kicked it up a notch and went on a 16-0 run to end any chance of a comeback.

Emerson Riley scored 43 points on the game, eclipsing teammate Brent Wood's previous team record of 42. Riley was unstoppable, towering over the Spartan players he made 43 look easy. He definitely made his case for conference player of the year tonight. Wood put up 19 in the game, finally eclipsing the 10 point mark after failing to do so the past 3 games.

The Ospreys head to Fort Myers next week to take on Florida Gulf Coast, who is currently tied with Lipscomb for second place in the Atlantic Sun.

            Coach Matthews’ Minute
“Big man just tore it up y'all. How often do you see a 7-footer put up 43? NBA better start sending those scouts.”

This one started out as expected, with UNF taking over. Emanuel Dancy tore it up in the first half, outscoring the Eagles 16-13 at one point. With the help of Brent Wood the pair combined for 35 in the first half, and had the Ospreys out in front by as much as 22 points.

Florida Gulf Coast didn't give up, however. They slowly but surely clawed their way into that deficit with North Florida in foul trouble. The lead dwindled to a mere 4 points with just over seven minutes remaining in the game, before a timeout call with a livid coach Matthews helped turn it back around.

It remained close the final few minutes, with a single digit lead the entire way except for the final minute when the game was over. Dancy finished with the game high 25 points. Riley didn't play much due to foul trouble, but put up 11 and 7 the game following his 43 point effort. Ed Rolax grabbed 19 boards for the Eagles, beating his previous career high by 10.

              Coach Matthews’ Minute
“We played terrible. What's up with that? How in the HELL does a guy who is 6'8" get 19 rebounds against two seven foot dudes?!.”

The plan all along was for Matthews to be a Florida guy, and go to somewhere like UCF or USF then maybe eventually to the Gators or Seminoles or something. I've seen the UCF job open up a few times so hopefully it does at the end of the season. If nothing pops up I'll probably take the best position I can get that will be returning a decent team. That might be hard for me to do though, considering I'll have another solid recruiting class coming in.

This one started out crazy. Junior Rivera picked up 2 fouls in the first minute of the game. In the 2nd minute of the game, Emerson Riley left with an injury. East Tennessee went on to lead the first 10 minutes of the game, which is the longest any team has led the Ospreys in a long, long, long time.

Luckily the injury is only a strained calf, and Riley came back to dominate in the 2nd half. He is day-to-day, and will probably get limited time the final two regular season games.

The Buccaneers had won 5 of the last 7 after losing their first 6 conference games. Despite the loss they still sit in 8th place of the A-Sun, which would be good enough for a 3rd game against the Ospreys to kick off the conference tournament if the season ended today.

Not much to talk about, but the conference is ending very interestingly. Four teams finished tied for 2nd place with a 10-6 record in conference. Only 8 teams make it, so getting 2nd or 3rd is huge since that means they wouldn't have to play us until the finals.

It was senior night in Jacksonville, with the only senior being the best player in North Florida history, Brent Wood. Everyone in the building was hoping he would go out with a bang. He'd already scored over 2500 points in his career coming into the game, and hoped to add quite a few more tonight. Wood didn't shoot well, but did put up 19 points. He was unselfish, dishing a career high 5 assists to go along with 4 steals, 3 rebounds, and an electrifying block that made the crowd go wild.

Wood also become the all-time leading scorer in A-Sun history during tonight's game. He passed Willie Jackson, who scored 2,535 points for Centenary during the 1980-1984 seasons. Brent Wood currently sits at 2,538 career points, which is good for 45th best all-time. To add to his accolades, Wood also surpassed J.J. Reddick in career 3-point field goals made.

One high note for Belmont was Jon House, who put up a career high 26 points in what will be his final game since Belmont finished just shy of making the conference tournament.

Despite the lopsided score, this game was actually close before the second half thumping. The score was actually 42-40 at one point. North Florida heads into the conference tournament on a very high note, and look to win it to guarantee their spot in the big dance.

“You know what, believe it or not I was pretty emotional before the game. Brent Wood is the only player that's been here my entire career. I gave him a shot as a freshman, and thanks to that he turned out to be a hell of a player. I'll miss the guy, but not til after he helps me win the conference and NCAA championships.”
