Durant, Westbrook power Thunder past Hawks

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and the Oklahoma City Thunder finished continued to rise into the upper echelon of the NBA and stirred up some bad blood with the Atlanta Hawks.

Durant scored 37 points and Westbrook riled up the Hawks by topping off a double-double with his 10th assist in the final seconds of the Thunder's 90-81 victory on Monday night.

Westbrook finished with 19 points and 10 assists -- the last coming when he rushed the ball up to Serge Ibaka for a dunk with 6.9 seconds left instead of running out the clock.

"You don't do that. The game is over with," Atlanta coach Larry Drew said. "The game is over with. You've got the ball, you run the clock out. Just that plain and simple."

"When you've got the game won, you run the clock out," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "Russell knows how I feel about situations like that, and it was a mistake, but I'm not going to let a mistake at the end of the game ruin what we've done tonight. I thought the game was as well as we've played both ends of the floor against one of the best teams in basketball."

Joe Johnson led Atlanta with 21 points and Josh Smith scored 19, both players tied for the team high with 8 rebounds.

James Harden had 14 points off the bench and Kendrick Perkins had a season high 15 rebounds for Oklahoma City.

Oklahoma City will welcome the Milwaukee Bucks to town on Wednesday night. The Bucks handed OKC one their 10 losses on the season 86-73 in Milwaukee.

AROUND THE NBA - TRADE NEWS

With Andrew Bynum out for the season, eliminating them from the Dwight Howard sweepstakes, the Los Angeles Lakers made a move to shore up the weakest spot on the team, point guard. In a three team deal that involved the Lakers, Cavs, and Knicks, L.A. was able to land Ramon Sessions. The Knicks were able to add a badly needed PG with experience after Baron Davis went down with a broken back. Cleveland added some good young pieces and short term deals. Toney Douglas is expected to step right into the Cavs starting line-up and the exit of Sessions frees up more minutes for rookie sensation Kyrie Irving. Cleveland also released Luke Harangody and Mychel Thompson to free up roster space for the new additions.

        Trade specifics:

        Lakers receive:
        Ramon Sessions from CLE
        Renaldo Balkman from NYK

        Cavaliers receive:
        Toney Douglas from NYK
        Matt Barnes from LAL
        Jerome Jordan from NYK

        Knicks receive:
        Steve Blake from LAL

The Utah Jazz also signed free agent Josh Powell to add depth to a front court that is missing Paul Millsap thanks to a broken arm.

Westbrook gets best of Jennings as Thunder bag Bucks

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Russell Westbrook easily won the match-up of young point guards, and the Oklahoma City Thunder had no trouble with the Milwaukee Bucks, either.

Kevin Durant had 17 points and 14 rebounds, Westbrook outplayed rookie Brandon Jennings, and the Thunder beat the Bucks 94-76 on Wednesday night.

Westbrook scored 18 of his 28 points during the first half. He also helped hold Jennings to 4-of-18 shooting and 9 points, 7.1 below his average.

"I just went out and did what I could to help my team. He's a good player and he's going to be a good player," Westbrook said. "My job as a point guard is to get us going, especially on the defensive end, whether it's rebounding or passing the ball or defending, just get our team going on the right track."

"Russell was really good tonight," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "He did a great job on Brandon Jennings, and that's not an easy cover."

Steven Jackson scored 24 points for Milwaukee, and Andrew Bogut added 22 points and 8 rebounds.

The Thunder trailed 48-47 at halftime, then scored 17 straight points. Milwaukee was 0-for-13 in the second half before scoring with 5:29 left in the third quarter on Jackson's basket. The Bucks never got closer than 10 points after the spree.

"We had a good talk in here at halftime and we all just decided to play harder," Durant said. "We did a great job of stopping Jennings from getting into the lane and doing what he wanted to on the offensive end."

Oklahoma City heads out for three straight road games starting with a back-to-back games at Detroit and Cleveland.

Thunder dominate Pistons for 8th straight win

AUBURN HILLS, MI -- The Oklahoma City Thunder are have won 8 straight games, their 2nd longest streak of the season.

Russell Westbrook had 25 points and 7 assists to lead the Thunder, Kevin Durant chipped in with 22 points and 8 rebounds.

"It is a big win, to go into one of the best arenas in the league and win," coach Scott Brooks said.

"They are well-coached and they have a wealth of young talent," Detroit coach Lawrence Frank said.

The Pistons were led by Tayshaun Prince with 23 points.

Oklahoma City jumped on Detroit early and cruised to a 92-73 win.

The Thunder out-scored the Pistons 47-31 in the first half. They pushed to lead to 30 to start the 4th quarter and Scott Brooks was able to rest his starters the entire 4th quarter.

The rest for the starters will hopefully pay off as the Thunder play again tomorrow night in Cleveland against the Cavaliers.

Thunder rout Cavs for 9th straight win

CLEVELAND -- Russell Westbrook dunked on the Cavaliers. Byron Scott slammed them even harder.

Westbrook began the game by crushing a two-handed jam that ignited his Thunder teammates and led Oklahoma City to a 107-72 rout over Cleveland, leaving Scott to doubt his team's toughness.

"I'm really starting to question what type of heart we have as a basketball team," the coach said.

Westbrook scored just 12 points but added 11 assists , helping the Thunder open a 40-point cushion and coast to an easy win. He began his one-man sideshow by delivering a dunk that stunned the Thunder, the Cavs, ushers, vendors, mascots and 19,000 fans.

"It caught us all by surprise," Kevin Durant said. "That was a big-time dunk. I've been waiting for that one."

Scott was incensed that none of his players bothered putting a body on Westbrook.

"It was too easy," he said. "He's a great player, but it gets to a point as a team where enough is enough and somebody has to knock him on his [rear end]. It's as simple as that, and that's where the heart part comes in. Or are you just going to keep backing down and taking it?"

Durant, the NBA's leading scorer, had 25 points -- five below his average -- but the Thunder hardly needed their superstar while improving to 36-10 on the season.

Kyrie Irving scored 16 and new addition Toney Douglas had 12 points for the Cavaliers.

James Harden scored 20 and Eric Maynor finished with 16 points and five assists for the Thunder.

The Thunder will have a three day break to end the month before heading to Dallas to meet the Mavericks, who have handed OKC two their ten loses on the season.

AROUND THE NBA - TRADE NEWS 2/1/2012

Having lost 8 of their last 10 games and falling out top 8 seeds for the playoffs, Memphis Grizzlies GM Chris Wallace decided it was time O.J. Mayo to move on. The Grizzlies traded Mayo along with back-up center Hamid Haddadi to the New Jersey Nets for Anthony Morrow and Shelden Williams.

The Nets stand 1.5 games behind the Milwaukee Bucks for the final playoff spot in the East. The addition of Mayo should give the Nets much better odds of closing that gap, and perhaps make the team a more attractive location for Dwight Howard.

Orlando GM Otis Smith is still holding firm and claims to have no plans to trade the star center. Orlando has been hot lately winning 7 out of ten and improving their record to 22-22 good enough for 7th in the East. It seems that Orlando may hold on to Howard. At the least he looks unlikely to move until after the city hosts the All-Star weekend. But the question remains, is it worth it to not trade Howard if the team finishes with a low playoff seed and early exit. The next three weeks look to be very interesting as teams try to improve or free up cap space.

Russell Westbrook, Kevin Durant shine as Thunder down Mavs

DALLAS -- Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant provided the offense for Oklahoma City, and Kendrick Perkins rebounding put the Thunder over the top.

Durant scored 33 points and Westbrook added 26 points and 8 assists as the Thunder beat the Dallas Mavericks 100-75 on Wednesday night.

Both teams lost players early to lower back injuries, but the Mavericks loss was much more significant.

Dirk Notwitzki left the game half way through the first quarter and James Harden followed a few minutes later.

Dallas managed to hang around for the first half but, couldn't keep pace with Thunder without there leader.

Jason Terry had 24 points for the short-handed Mavericks, who snapped a three-game winning streak.

Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle was ejected with 9:34 left in the game after picking up two technicals in a span of about two minutes. The second was assessed after Carlisle kicked the game ball into the stands in frustration during a stoppage in play after a no-call that went against his team.

His frustration may have been justified as the Thunder went to the free throw line 33 times compared to the Mavericks 8.

Kendrick Perkins just missed a double-double with 8 points to go with his 14 rebounds.

The win makes it ten straight for OKC, hitting the mark for the second time this season.

Oklahoma City returns home for one game against the Hornets, before heading out on a 4 game road trip that will feature to sets of back-to-back games.
