Re: Detroit Pistons: Rebuilding Towards the Title

Devastating Injury For Spurs, Parker To Miss Most, Or All Of Playoffs

The San Antonio Spurs title hopes took a huge hit when all-star point guard Tony Parker went down with a severely sprained ankle. Parker is not expected to return before the end of May, leaving the possibility he could play in the finals if the Spurs make it that far. Parker has been taking on a larger scoring role this year, averaging a career high 23 points per game while dishing out 5.7 assists a night. He is shooting a career high .490 from beyond the arc, far surpassing his career .332 percentage from three point territory.

Coach Greg Popovich said, "This is a tough loss but injuries are part of the game. We will still compete and still expect to win each night. Patty Mills, Nando De Colo, and Cory Joseph are all quite capable of leading our team."

The Spurs are currently 51-29 and in 3rd place in the Western Conference.

Durant MVP, 4 Pistons Receive Honors, Wade And Anthony Snubbed

Oklahoma City Thunder Forward Kevin Durant, who led his team to a 66-16 record, was named MVP of the league, 1st team all NBA, and 1st team all defense. Durant averaged 31.6 points per game to lead the league, 9.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.5 blocks.

The Pistons Greg Monroe, on the heels of winning NBA player of the month for March, was named 2nd team all NBA. Rodney Stuckey won 6th man of the year. Andre Drummond and Kyle Singler both made the all rookie 2nd team.

Two major snubs were Carmelo Anthony and Dwyane Wade. While Wade made the all-defensive team, he failed to make any of the three all-NBA teams despite averaging 25.3 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.5 steals, 1.5 blocks, and shooting 52% from the field. Anthony was third in the league at 29.5 points per game, averaged a career high 8.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists, shot .462, and shot a career high .401 from beyond the arc.

Returning Jerebko Leads Huge 4th Quarter, Pistons Victory In Game One

Welcome back Jonas Jerebko. Jerebko played his first game since March 29th and scored 13 of his 17 points in the 4th quarter to lead Detroit to 42 4th quarter points and a come from behind 102-101 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers in Game One of the Eastern Conference Playoffs. Both the Sixers and Pistons are playing this series without key players as Brandon Knight and Jrue Holiday are expected to miss the entire playoffs with injury. The 76ers led by 10 heading into the 4th, but Jerebko caught fire and other Pistons also knocked down shot after shot. Detroit outscored Philly 42-31 in the 4th.

Piston big man Greg Monroe led the team with 22 points. Rodney Stuckey, starting in place of Knight, had 19 points. Jose Calderon had 15 points and 9 assists, while Andre Drummond paced the team with 11 rebounds. The Sixers were led by Thaddeus Young with 22 points. Nick Young had 20 points while Andrew Bynum had 18. Starting at the point instead of his normal 3 spot with Holiday out, Evan Turner had 10 points and 6 assists.

Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "This was a big win. Grabbing one on the road is always important but we have lots of work to do. You don't win a 7 game series in one night. I had some concerns about our defense tonight and we needed a hot shooting 4th quarter to pull this one out. I wouldn't say we played particularly well, but we did work hard and persevere and that led to having the opportunity to snatch the victory in the 4th."

Sixers coach Doug Collins said, "Disappointing. We couldn't stop them in the 4th. Our pick and roll D was atrocious. We allowed Calderon and Stuckey to penetrate and find Jerebko for jumpers or rolling to the hoop and we let Monroe get to his spots. We had to do better to win this series. We have no excuses. We have 12 NBA players on that bench, same as them. Injuries happen and you overcome them."
