Disastrous 3rd Quarter Dooms Pistons, Bobcats Win 94-77
The NBA record for futility in a quarter is held by the Sacramento Kings, who scored just 4 points in the 1st quarter against the Los Angeles Lakers. Detroit barely escaped matching that dismal record by scoring 6 in the third quarter on their way to a 94-77 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats. Detroit led by 5 going into the third but proceeded to throw up brick after brick, as well as turning the ball over 8 times in the quarter. Charlotte scored 24 to build a 13 point lead they never relinquished. While the third quarter was a major issue, Detroit did themselves no favors all game by settling for jump shots. The Pistons attempted just 6 free throws while Charlotte had 18 attempts.
Charlotte was led by Gerald Henderson and Kemba Walker with 23 points each. Bismack Biyombo controlled the paint with 12 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. Walker also led the team with 8 assists. Detroit was led by Brandon Knight with 22 points. Jose Calderon led the team with 10 assists but failed to score. Greg Monroe had just 11 points on 5-14 shooting but did lead the team with 13 rebounds.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "A couple times a year you are going to have a quarter like that. We just couldn't make shots and we compounded it with some sloppy passing. At the same time I commend Charlotte for some excellent defense. Biyombo is a big time defensive talent who will only get better."
Detroit fell back to .500 at 28-28 while Charlotte improved to 20-34. Detroit has Thursday off before visiting the new look Pacers on Friday night. Indiana traded 40% of their starting lineup in Danny Granger and George Hill to get Brandon Jennings, who immediately signed a contract extension.
