Re: Detroit Pistons: Rebuilding Towards the Title

Disastrous 3rd Quarter Dooms Pistons, Bobcats Win 94-77

The NBA record for futility in a quarter is held by the Sacramento Kings, who scored just 4 points in the 1st quarter against the Los Angeles Lakers. Detroit barely escaped matching that dismal record by scoring 6 in the third quarter on their way to a 94-77 loss to the Charlotte Bobcats. Detroit led by 5 going into the third but proceeded to throw up brick after brick, as well as turning the ball over 8 times in the quarter. Charlotte scored 24 to build a 13 point lead they never relinquished. While the third quarter was a major issue, Detroit did themselves no favors all game by settling for jump shots. The Pistons attempted just 6 free throws while Charlotte had 18 attempts.

Charlotte was led by Gerald Henderson and Kemba Walker with 23 points each. Bismack Biyombo controlled the paint with 12 rebounds and 6 blocked shots. Walker also led the team with 8 assists. Detroit was led by Brandon Knight with 22 points. Jose Calderon led the team with 10 assists but failed to score. Greg Monroe had just 11 points on 5-14 shooting but did lead the team with 13 rebounds.

Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "A couple times a year you are going to have a quarter like that. We just couldn't make shots and we compounded it with some sloppy passing. At the same time I commend Charlotte for some excellent defense. Biyombo is a big time defensive talent who will only get better."

Detroit fell back to .500 at 28-28 while Charlotte improved to 20-34. Detroit has Thursday off before visiting the new look Pacers on Friday night. Indiana traded 40% of their starting lineup in Danny Granger and George Hill to get Brandon Jennings, who immediately signed a contract extension.

I blame the weak 3rd quarter on Kyle Singler starting. Seems legit.

Yeah we are just treading water until the off-season where we get a SF in the draft or in free agency. right now Singler, Middleton, maggette, an undersized Stuckey, or a too-slow Jerebko makes for a nightmare at the 3 spot.

Big 4th Leads Pistons Past New Look Pacers 110-99

The Detroit Pistons thought the Indiana Pacers would have feeling out process with new point guard Brandon Jennings, Paul George moved from the 2 spot to the 3 and with Lance Stephenson being moved into the starting lineup at the 2 guard position. However the Pacers raced out to a 31-19 lead, led by center Roy Hibbert who finished the game with 25 points. Playing catchup the Pistons tied the game at the end of the 3rd and used a 26-15 4th quarter to win 110-99. Indiana fell to 18-37 in a monumentally disappointing year. The team traded point guard George Hill and small forward Danny Granger to the Bucks for point guard Brandon Jennings, who immediately signed a contract extension. The move allowed the team to move George to his more natural 3 spot and get athletic 2 guard Stephenson in the lineup, improving team defense. Jennings had 16 points and 8 assists in his Pacer debut but Stephenson struggled, scoring just five points on 2-7 shooting.

The Pistons were led by big man Greg Monroe who had 30 points and 12 rebounds. Brandon Knight had 22 points and 8 assists. Also with 8 assists was point guard Jose Calderon. Also in double figures for Detroit were Jonas Jerebko with 15, Rodney Stuckey with 14, and Charlie Villanueva with 10. Indiana was led by Hiibbert's 25. George had 16 points and 11 rebounds but shot just 6-17.

Pacers coach Frank Vogel said, "It will take a few games. Right now we are looking to change our offense a bit. Brandon is more of a penetrator and will push the ball in transition more than George (Hill) did. We will also have Paul playing in different spots, curling off screens more, try some pick and roll"

Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "We had a nice 4th quarter. We had a rough start but we clawed our way back and then clamped down on D in the 4th. Andre and Jonas did a great job on David West, limiting both his touches and where he got the ball on the floor. You have to push him farther out of the paint. I think we are right where we want to be, pushing to grab a playoff spot."

Stoudemire tears hamstring, out 6-8 weeks

New York Knick forward Amar'e Stoudemire tore his hamstring against the 76ers last night. Stoudemire has helped lead the Knicks to a 31-22 record and the current 5th position in the Eastern Conference playoff race. He was averaging 21.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 1.4 blocks per game in 33.2 minutes. He hopes to return for a week or two before the playoffs start in mid-April.

Re: Detroit Pistons: Rebuilding Towards the Title

Hornets Dominate Pistons 120-88, Anderson 25 Points Off Bench

The Detroit Pistons were done within the first 6 minutes of the game. The New Orleans Hornets outscored the Pistons 30-13 in the 1st quarter and cruised to a 120 dismantling of Detroit. Ryan Anderson came off the bench to score 25 points in 24 minutes of action, knocking down 6 three pointers. The Hornets shot 55% from the field and hit 9 of their 16 threes. They also shot 25 free throws while the Pistons shot just 11. Detroit was limited to 43% shooting and hit just 2 of their 16 3 point attempts.

In addition to Anderson, Eric Gordon also had 25 points. Rookie Anthony Davis had 34 points and blocked 5 Detroit shots. Greivis Vasquez had 11 assists. Detroit was led Greg Monroe with 30. Rodney Stuckey had 17 but bruised his hip and is listed as day to day. Brandon Knight shot just 6-17, missed all 5 of his threes, and scored 12 points. Kyle Singler also struggled with his shot, hitting just 1-9.

Pistons coach Lawrence Frank was frustrated. "I know many will say that we had a winning streak and a game like this was inevitable. I get that. If we just had a bad night shooting, I understand. But this loss wasn't about Brandon or Kyle or anybody else having a bad night shooting. Tonight was about coming out with a lack of energy and 4 quarters of poor defense. We didn't get out on their three point shooters. We got beat inside. We didn't get hands in faces of shooters. It was a team collapse on defense and one I was very unhappy to be a part of. I take responsibility as well. We were obviously unprepared to play tonight. That is on me as well as the guys on the court. We will have a long discussion about what happened and how to keep it from happening again."

Detroit fell to 32-29 while New Orleans improved to 28-32. Detroit heads to San Antonio for a Sunday night game with the Spurs next.

Three Major Injuries Strike Over Weekend

The opening weekend of march was unkind to the big men of the NBA. Indiana Pacer center Roy Hibbert broke his foot and and will miss the rest of the season. Golden State Warrior center Andrew Bogut tore his patellar tendon and will also be done for the year. Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki sprained his neck and is predicted to miss 4-6 weeks. With forward Shawn Marion also out, the team may struggle to hold on to their current 7th position in the west. Their is an outside chance Nowitzki might make it back for the final couple games of the regular season. The Warriors are also in the thick of the playoff race, just a 1/2 game behind the Warriors and in 9th behind the New Orleans Hornets, who hold the tiebreaker.
