Re: Detroit Pistons: Rebuilding Towards the Title

Pistons Disastrous 3rd Quarter Leads To 82-82 Loss To Bulls

Up 13 at half on the road, the Detroit Pistons knew Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls would make a run. They had no idea how powerful that run would be. Chicago came out in the 3rd quarter trailing 43-30 and left leading 60-53. Chicago outscored Detroit 30-10 in the 3rd and held on in the 4th for the victory. The Pistons again struggled with their shot, hitting 37%. Chicago only hit 38% but won because they simply received more opportunities. Chicago shot 92 times compared to 67 for Detroit. Detroit turned the ball over 20 times, led by Rodney Stuckey's 7, and allowed Chicago 18 offensive rebounds. This allowed Chicago to overcome a dreadful night from the bench as their reserves shot 1-19 from the field and scored just 12 points.

All five Bull's starters scored in double figures, led by Luol Deng with 18. Joakim Noah had 16, Carlos Boozer and Richard Hamilton 14, and Rose 13. All three front courters had double digit rebounds as well, led by Deng's 13. Rose had a team-high 10 assists. Detroit was led by Stuckey with 15. Greg Monroe had 12 points and 11 rebounds. Tayshaun Prince also had 12 while Brandon Knight had 11 and Jonas Jerebko and Kyle Singler had 10 each.

Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "It was like their was a lid on the basket. We couldn't hit a shot and we turned the ball over 9 times in that third quarter. I think they had 28 fast break points, and 18 of them were in that 3rd quarter. We lost not just because of our shooting, but because we allowed them to get out in transition, we failed to grab defensive boards, and we didn't take care of the ball."

Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said, "That was as good of defense as we can play in that 3rd quarter. Spectacular."

Detroit fell to 20-22 while Chicago improved to 28-14. Detroit now heads down south to face Miami.

Grizzlies Clear Payroll, Trade Speights To Cleveland

The Memphis Grizzlies have to be considered the largest disappointment of the NBA season. Picked by many to contend in the upper half of the Western Conference, Memphis is just 12-28. Facing luxury tax concerns and having most of their payroll wrapped up in the contracts of Marc Gasol, Rudy Gay, Zach Randolph, and Mike Conley, Memphis traded talented big man Marreese Speights, swingman Wayne Ellington, young point guard Josh Selby, and a future 1st round pick to the Cleveland Cavaliers for Jon Leuer. The team also signed Jawad Williams to a 10 day contract. Cleveland is currently in the 8th spot in the Eastern Conference and looking to add depth. Speights is expected to take the minutes of rookie Ty Zeller, who has struggled playing behind Tristan Thompson and Anderson Varejao while Ellington and Selby will compete in a crowded backcourt with Dion Waiters, C.J. Miles, Daniel Gibson, and Shaun Livingston.

Pistons Unable To Slow Down Heat, Lose 111-90, Wade Scores 37

If games like tonight are a measuring stick for the Detroit Pistons and their playoff hopes, they have a long way to go. Detroit hung with the Miami Heat in the 1st half, but the Heat's strong shooting pushed them past the Pistons in the 2nd half, leading to a 111-90 victory. Dwyane Wade scored 37 for the Heat, who shot 53% for the game. Both teams were careful with the ball, with Miami turning it over 8 times and Detroit just 7. The Pistons shot just 37% though, and just 29% in the 2nd half.

LeBron James scored 32 points and grabbed 13 rebounds while Ray Allen was also in double figures with 13. Detroit was led by Brandon Knight with 23 points. He also had a team-high 9 assists and 7 rebounds. Rodney Stuckey had 22, while Greg Monroe had 16 and 9 rebounds.

Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "I don't buy the idea that are supposed to lose to Miami. That said, they certainly outclassed us in the 2nd half. We didn't hit shots, they did. We gave them easy shots, they didn't give us easy shots."

Detroit lost their 3rd in a row and fell to 20-23. Miami improved to 28-12. Detroit plays Orlando Sunday night in Orlando.

Pistons Dominate Inside, Beat Orlando Magic 92-88

The Detroit Pistons rode a big 3rd quarter and dominance inside the paint to a 92-88 victory Sunday night over the Orlando Magic. Detroit outscored Orlando 46-30 in the paint. Detroit also had 24 fast break points to just 14 for the Magic. The Pistons trailed by 7 at half, but used a 31-20 34d quarter to take the lead and then hold on in the 4th quarter. Orlando may have cost themselves the game by missing 10 of their 24 free throws. They also only managed 4 second chance points on their 15 offensive rebounds.

Detroit was led by Greg Monroe with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Tayshaun Prince had 14, While both Rodney Stuckey and Brandon Knight had 13. Both Monroe and Andre Drummond blocked two Orlando shots each. Orlando was led by former Pistons Aaron Afflalo with 20 points. Jameer Nelson had 15, Glen "Big Baby" Davis had 14, and Al Harrington had 11 off the bench in just 16 minutes.

Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "We needed this win. After losing 3 in a row, we need to get back on track, get our confidence back. I liked how we got penetration for eady baskets inside and we got out in transition. That helped us control the points in the paint. Greg and Andre also did a nice job defensively defending the paint. We need to build on this victory, remember what worked."

Detroit improved to 21-23, while the Magic fell to 16-27. Detroit heads back home to face the Milwaukee Bucks.

Pistons Dominate Bucks Again, Knight Has 31 And 11

The Detroit Pistons wish they could play the Milwaukee Bucks every night. Playing without Monta Ellis still, the Bucks lost their third game of the month to Detroit, this time falling 126-105. Brandon Knight had a huge 1st half covering for a foul-troubled Greg Monroe. Knight scored 23 of his 31 and had 7 of his 11 assists in the 1st half. For the game, Detroit shot 51% from the field and hit 10-21 from beyond the arc. Knight hit 6 of his 7 3 pointers. Detroit was able to consistently penetrate the paint for easy layups or kickouts to open shooters. The Bucks seemed to have no answer on defense, putting up little fight.

In addition to Knight, Rodney Stuckey had 21 points and 6 assists for Detroit. Monroe, who had just 4 points in 4 minutes in the 1st half, scored 16 points in 16 minutes in the 2nd half to finish with 20. Milwaukee was led by Mike Dunleavy with 20 points. Brandon Jennings had 19 points and 10 assists but hit just 6 of his 21 shots, including missing 10 of his last 13. Samuel Dalembert had 12 points and 7 rebounds in just 16 minutes of the bench.

Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "We were really clicking on offense. It wasn't just Brandon or Rodney getting in the lane. It was Kyle. It was Tayshaun. It was Will. We had open shot after open shot. And when they didn't try to help, we took it all the way to the rack. Defensively I was pleased as well. Their 105 points were a product of pace rather than any defensive issues on our side."

Detroit improved to 22-23 while Milwaukee fell to 16-27. Detroit heads to Indiana for a game tomorrow night. The Pacers are a dismal 16-30 in a extremely disappointing year.

Pistons Trade Prince, Acquire Calderon In 3 Team Deal

The Grizzlies, Raptors and Pistons agreed to a six-player trade Wednesday that sent star swingman Rudy Gay to Toronto.
The Grizzlies, in the midst of a money-motivated makeover, acquired forward Ed Davis and veteran guard Jose Calderon in the deal that also sent backup center Hamed Haddadi to the Raptors.

Memphis then shipped Calderon to Detroit for Austin Daye and Tayshaun Prince.
The Grizzlies also received a 2013 second-round pick from Toronto as part of the deal.

Prince and Daye have both spent their entire careers with Detroit, and Prince was the last link to the proud championship team of 2003-04.
"Trading a player like Tayshaun Prince, who has meant so much to our organization and contributed to our championship success, is never easy," Pistons president Joe Dumars said in a statement. "We want to thank Tayshaun for his professionalism and contributions over the last 10 years. We also appreciate everything that Austin Daye has done for our team both on and off the court over the past three-plus years."

They'll get a hard-nosed defender in return in Prince, the 32-year-old forward who was drafted by the Pistons in the first round in 2002. He is averaging 11.7 points and 4.6 rebounds per game this season. Bringing in Calderon gives Detroit a veteran mentor for young point guard Brandon Knight.
"We are pleased to welcome Jose Calderon, knowing that he fits our mold as a high character individual who is a great competitor," Dumars said. "Jose is a great facilitator at the guard position and a player that we feel gives us tremendous flexibility on the court when added to the core of guards we have on the roster."
Calderon joined the Raptors from Spain in 2005 and has been a fan favorite and trusted veteran on the team. He is averaging 11.1 points and 7.4 assists this season for the Raptors (16-29), who are desperately trying to scratch their way into the playoff picture. Toronto was in 11th place before the games were played Wednesday, 5½ games behind Boston for the eight seed.

Calderon has an expiring contract worth 10.56m this season. Daye also had an expiring contract. The trade allows Detroit to shed Prince's contract, which ran for two more seasons after this one at a 3 year total of 21.71m. Detroit will move Calderon into the starting lineup, sliding Brandon Knight to the two and Kyle Singler to the three. Rodney Stuckey will remain the 6th man but may see more time as an undersized 3, playing with Calderon and Knight. Detroit hopes to land their starting small forward of the future in the draft, if they have a 1st round pick this season. Detroit must send their 1st to Charlotte if they make the playoffs, while they are able to keep it if they are in the lottery.

New Look Pistons Cruise Past Pacers Behind Monroe, 111-91

Playing their first game without Tayshaun Prince on the roster in over 10 seasons, the Detroit Pistons were firing on all cylinders offensively in a 111-91 rout over the Indiana Pacers. Detroit started Brandon Knight with newcomer Jose Calderon in the backcourt. Kyle Singler slid over to the 3 spot and Cory Maggette entered the rotation as the primary backup at the small forward position. Detroit shot a sizzling 54% for the game, while Indiana shot 40%. The Pistons led in both fast break points (11-6) and 2nd chance points (12-6) and dominated in the paint with 64 points compared to 36 for Indiana.

Greg Monroe led the Pistons with 30 points and 15 rebounds. Brandon Knight, playing significant minutes at the 2 guard spot, had 25 points and continued his hot shooting from distance by hitting 4 of his 5 threes. Andre Drummond had 13 points and 14 rebounds while Rodney Stuckey rounded out those in double figures with 12 points and a team-high 9 assists. Calderon had 8 points and 5 assists in 34 minutes in his Piston debut. Indiana was led by Roy Hibbert with 21 points, 10 of them in the 1st quarter. Danny Granger had 22 points. George Hill had 16 points and 7 assists. Pacers starters David West and Paul George, who average 15.3 and 13.9, respectively, combined for just 15 points on 5-18 shooting.

Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "Jose gives us a new dimension as a true pass first point guard. I think we will play with a little quicker pace. We will also use a lot of three guard lineups with Brandon, Jose, and Rodney, particularly when we have Andre and Greg at the 4 and 5 defending the paint. I know the team, myself, and the fans will all miss Tayshaun, but I'm excited about having Jose on our team."

Indiana coach Frank Vogel said, "Different night, same garbage. We failed to execute, we didn't defend, and we didn't rebound. What more is there to say? It either changes in a hurry or myself and many players on this team may be looking for work."

Detroit improved to 23-23 while Indiana sank further in the East at a disappointing 16-31. Detroit now has a clash with Miami on Friday the 1st.

Pistons Start Slow, Lose To Lakers 110-90 At Home

The Detroit Pistons lost their 2nd straight at home, this time to the Los Angeles Lakers 110-90. The Lakers ran out to a 32-19 1st quarter lead and cruised to victory. The Lakers had 36 fast break points to just 16 for Detroit. LA also took double the free throws that Detroit had (42-21). The third major factor in the Lakers victory was their dominance on the boards. Los Angeles out-rebounded Detroit 59-38 overall and 21-10 on the offensive glass.

Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 34 points. Dwight Howard had 22 points and 9 boards, while also blocking 3 shots. Pau Gasol had a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Laker point guards Steve Blake and Chris Duhon took only one shot between them but combined for 7 assists and just 2 turnovers, while the team ran most sets through Kobe Bryant or Pau Gasol in the high post.

Brandon Knight led Detroit with 17 points. Greg Monroe had 12 points and 12 rebounds but struggled against Dwight Howard. Rodney Stuckey missed 10 of his 15 shots and scored just 12, while Kyle Singler and Jose Calderon were the other Pistons in double figures with 12 and 11, respectively.

Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "I know there is some adjustment with the addition of Jose but we don't have much time to get acclimated. There are just 34 games left and we are two games out of the eight spot, behind a good Cleveland team."

Detroit fell to 23-25, while the Lakers improved to 31-17. Detroit has to fly to NY for a game tomorrow night at the Garden. New York is currently 28-17.
