Re: Detroit Pistons: Rebuilding Towards the Title
Pistons Give Fans Happy New Year, Blast Kings 140-93
After a rough December defensively, Lawrence Frank certainly hoped a new year meant better defense. While the defense was solid, it was the offense that exploded in the new year as the Pistons bashed the Sacramento Kings 140-93. Detroit shot a season-high 62%, including 63% from beyond the arc. Every player scored at least 4 points, with six different Pistons in double figures. Detroit hit from the outside, the inside, the free throw line and in between. They scored in every type of way and did if effectively. Sacramento had no answer defensively and struggled with their own shooting, hitting just 39%. Early on, Sacramento stayed in the game behind offensive rebounding and second chance points, but even that dried up as the Pistons pulled away.
Rodney Stuckey continued to be hot, scoring 25. Tayshaun Prince, Kyle Singler, and Brandon Knight all had 18, with Knight leading the team with 9 assists. Charlie Villanueva had 13 points, while Greg Monroe had 11 points in a quiet night. Andre Drummond led the team with 10 rebounds and also had 2 blocks. Sacramento was led by Tyreke Evans with 26 points. Aaron Brooks had 15 and Chuck Hayes had 11. Kings star Demarcus Cousins was limited to 6 points and 3 rebounds in 22 minutes of ineffective action.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "What a great way to start the new year. I've never seen us play better offensively. Every screen was solid, every shot had great form, our decision making was top notch. As a coach, I couldn't ask for more. And I thought for the 2nd straight game, our defense was vastly improved."
Embattled Kings coach Keith Smart said, "Shameful. Everyone of us, myself included should be ashamed of the performance we put on tonight."
Detroit improved to 16-18. Sacramento fell to 11-20. Detroit now has two days off before Atlanta comes to town.

Pistons Listless In 98-87 Loss To Hawks, Smith Leads With 30
Someone forgot to tell the Detroit Pistons their 3 day layoff was over. After putting on perhaps their best performance of the season against the Sacramento Kings, the Pistons came out lacking energy and never recovered. Atlanta pulled away in the 2nd quarter, taking a 17 point halftime lead and extended it to 22 after 3. Only a strong 4th quarter by Detroit made the score respectable looking. Atlanta outshot the Pistons 48% to 38%. The only thing that kept the game from being a complete blowout was Detroit's 20-4 advantage in second chance points. The also outscored Atlanta 22 to 12 in fastbreak points. However in the standard halfcourt set, Atlanta forward Josh Smith dominated with 30 points. He also dished out five assists as the Hawks ran their offense through him and Detroit struggled to find an answer. Smith was too quick for Drummond, Jerebko or Villanueva and was too strong for Singler, Daye, and Prince.
Al Horford had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Lou Williams also had 16. Jeff Teague led the Hawks with 9 assists. Brandon Knight led Detroit with 21. Greg Monroe had a nice all-around game with 19 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 assists. Rodney Stuckey, hot of late, cooled down as he shot just 5-19 from the field, scoring 15.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "I'm not sure if we got cocky from our win against the Kings, if we had too much time off, or what the problem was but I was less than pleased with how we played. Defensively we just seemed a step slow. Offensively we settled for jump shots. If it wasn't for our offensive rebounding and some transition baskets, we lose this game by 35."
Detroit fell to 16-19 while Atlanta improved to 18-13. Detroit remains at home with Charlotte coming to town on Sunday evening. The Bobcats are currently 10-22, with rumors swirling that coach Jeff Dunlap is already in trouble after just 32 games coaching the team.

Pistons Bounce Back, Thrash Bobcats 107-88
After a lackluster performance Friday night against the Atlanta Hawks, the Detroit Pistons came out with determination and energy Sunday. The Pistons forced 20 turnovers and hounded Charlotte point guard Kemba Walker into 6-21 shooting on their way to a 107-88 victory. Detroit hit 49% of their shots, including 7-14 threes. The Pistons dominated in fast break points (20-4) and points in the paint (46-30). They also grabbed 15 offensive rebounds compared to just 8 for Charlotte.
Brandon Knight and Rodney Stuckey each had 24 points to lead the Pistons. Greg Monroe had 18 to go with 8 rebounds and a team-high 7 assists. Tayshaun Prince and Kyle Singler were also in double figures with 13 and 12, respectively. Gerald Henderson led Charlotte with 21 points. Byron Mullens had 19 to go with 12 rebounds. Walker had 18 but only 1 assist and also 5 turnovers.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "Much better effort. We came out focused and executed our game plan. We knew they lacked a strong post presence so we concentrated on disrupting their perimeter players. On offense we ran through Greg. When they double-teamed, he found cutters or shooters on the perimeter. Other than the turnovers, I thought we played a very solid game. We were a little sloppy with the ball and that was reflected in our 17 turnovers. I felt many of them were of the unforced variety."
Detroit improved to 17-19 while Charlotte fell to 10-23. Detroit now takes a long break of 4 full days before playing in Milwaukee on Friday.

Re: Detroit Pistons: Rebuilding Towards the Title
Knight And Monroe Star As Pistons Beat Up On Bucks Again
This time Brandon Jennings was back, but it didn't matter as the Detroit Pistons beat up on the Milwaukee Bucks for the 2nd time in two weeks. Brandon Knight had his first career triple double and Greg Monroe dominated the paint in Detroit's 121-99 victory. Detroit shot 50% and also grabbed 57 rebounds to 45 for the Bucks. Jennings struggled in his first game back after an achilles injury, hitting just 8-25 shots and turning the ball over 5 times.
Knight finished the game with 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Monroe had 28 points, 11 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 blocks. Kyle Singler knocked down 3 of his 4 three pointers on the way to 14 and Jonas Jerebko had 11 points and 9 boards. Ersan Ilyasova had 18 points and 8 rebounds. Also in double figures were Larry Sanders with 12 and Doron lamb with 10 off the bench.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "We were clicking on all cylinders tonight. If Rodney hits the shots he normally hits (Stuckey shot 4-18), it's an even bigger victory. I like the inside outside game we are playing. Our bigs are doing a nice job of passing out and we also are really improving on the pick and roll. Defensively we forced Jennings into lots of tough shots and limited their transition game."
Bucks coach Scott Skiles said, "Disappointing game on the defensive end. We knew Brandon might be a little rusty but we needed his offense out there. His shooting woes are no excuse for allowing the Piston guards to penetrate, for slow double teams and for poor rotation and closeouts on their shooters. Injury Update, Paul Pierce Out 6-8 Weeks.
Celtic all-star forward Paul Pierce is going to be out 6-8 weeks with back issues. The Celtics are already without 6th man Jason Terry, who has 2-4 weeks on the sidelines with a broken foot.
Other key players currently out of action include Nets 6th man Marshon Brooks, who is out 4-6 more weeks with a broken jaw that has already kept him out of action for 15 days. Monta Ellis was injured 2 weeks ago, tearing a ligament in his hand. Optimistic estimates have him returning in 4-6 weeks.
The Los Angeles Lakers are struggling with injuries at point guard. Steve Nash has plantar fasciitis and is expected to miss 2-4 weeks. However backup Steve Blake is out with a sprained ankle now, so Nash may try to play through the injury.

Pistons Falter From The Start, Fall To Jazz 115-95
After a late night flight home from Milwaukee, Pistons coach Lawrence Frank did not have a morning shootaround and hoped his players got some rest. Unfortunately they were sleepwalking through their home game against the Utah Jazz Saturday night. The Pistons fell behind from the opening tip and were never seriously in the game. Utah blocked 14 Detroit shots and ran over, through, and around the Pistons with 38 fast break points. Utah also shot 51% while the Pistons hit 43%. Early in the game Al Jefferson sparked the Jazz, scoring 12 1st quarter points to help Utah to their 9 point lead. In the 3rd quarter when Utah put the game away, 6th man Gordon Hayward scored 10 points and grabbed 6 of his 10 rebounds.
Utah was led by Jefferson's 29 to go with 12 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Hayward also had a double double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Paul Millsap had 20 points to go with 3 blocks. Detroit was led by Greg Monroe with 22 points and 8 rebounds. He also had 6 assists. Brandon Knight had 19 points and Rodney Stuckey had 15. Stuckey had a team-high 7 assists.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank was disappointed. "For a young team, we sure lack energy on the 2nd night of these back to back games. This is the NBA. To be perfectly blunt...grow up. Be an NBA player and do what NBA players do by putting together back to back nights of high energy, high execution basketball. Until we can do that, we aren't a playoff team."
Detroit missed its opportunity to move back to .500, falling to 18-20. Utah improved 17-22. Detroit now travels to London, England for a special contest with the New York Knicks at London's O2 arena.

Detroit Rebounds From Slow Start, Beat Knicks Before London Sellout Crowd
Down 17-5 in the first 5 minutes, the Detroit Pistons called timeout. Coach Lawrence Frank asked them first if they were aware they were embarassing themselves on national TV, then told them that experts say jet lag shouldn't affect them after two days in the United Kingdom. Whether the travel lesson or the threat of national shame, or both, worked, the Pistons fought their way back and never looked back in their 118-107 victory. Detroit and New York played the game at a torrid pace, rarely letting the shot clock get below 10. The Pistons outshot the Knicks 49% to 45%. The Piston bench shined with 55 points, while the Knicks received just 19 points from their bench. The sellout London crowd at O2 arena treated the Pistons as visitors despite it technically being a Detroit home game.
Brandon Knight led the Pistons with 24 points and 7 assists. Rodney Stuckey had 21 while Greg Monroe had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Also in double figures were Tayshaun Prince (13), Charlie Villanueva (12), and Andre Drummond (12). New York was led by Amar'e Stoudemire with 32 on 15-18 shooting. Stoudemire got 10 of his points on offensive rebounds and 10 more in transition, but was rarely the focal point of the Knick halfcourt offense. That role belonged to Carmelo Anthony, who struggled with his shot, finishing 12-33 for 25 points. Also struggling was point guard Raymond Felton, who shot 3-17 for 9 points, although he did have 11 assists.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "I was very proud of how we responded to adversity. I challenged them on that 1st timeout. I called them out and reminded them that the world was watching and they needed to show what Pistons basketball was all about. From that point on we executed well and forced Carmelo and Felton to take a lot of tough shots."
Anthony said, "I don't think it was fatigue. I just had an off night. And Tayshaun is a tough defender. he made me work and I missed some shots that I can make."
Detroit improved to 19-20 while New York fell to 21-17. Detroit travels back home for a Sunday night game with the Boston Celtics, who will be without Jason Terry and Paul Pierce.

Detroit Pulls Away From Boston In 4th, Evens Record At 20-20
The Detroit Pistons celebrated their return from London with a strong 4th quarter performance that allowed them to pull away from a pesky, but under-manned Boston Celtics team, 105-93. Boston is playing without 2 of their top 3 scorers in Paul Pierce and Jason Terry. However the Celtics trailed by just 4 at half and actually had a two point lead entering the 4th quarter. However the Pistons got hot from the field, shooting 68% in the 4th and outscored Boston 32-18. For the game, Detroit shot 50% while Boston's horrible 4th dropped their percentage to just 39% for the game. Detroit also blocked 11 Celtic shots, with Kyle Singler leading the way with 4 and Andre Drummond adding 3.
Greg Monroe led the Pistons with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Brandon Knight had a team-high 8 assists to go with his 17 points. Jonas Jerebko had 15 in just 18 minutes, while Rodney Stuckey added 14. Boston was led by Rajon Rondo, Avery Bradley, and Kevin Garnett all scoring 16. Rondo had 10 assists to lead the team, with Brandon Bass having a team-high 10 rebounds.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "Boston was pesky. They competed all night but we had a great 4th quarter. I was happy to see their wasn't any hangover from London. We came out with good energy."
Celtics coach Doc Rivers said, "Injuries are no excuse. We have 12 NBA basketball players suited up every night and we had every opportunity going into the 4th quarter to put this game away. Right now we are in a dog fight for the 8th spot and we can't afford to freefall without Paul and Jason. Other guys have to step up, hit big shots in the 4th quarter, play lockdown defense, and grab big rebounds."
Detroit won their 5th game out of their last 6 and moved back to .500 at 20-20. Boston fell to 20-20, tying them with Detroit for the 8th seed in the Eastern Conference race. Detroit awaits Orlando for a Tuesday night matchup before heading on a three game road trip.

Pistons Can't Find Shooting Touch, Lose At Home To Magic 91-77
U-G-L-Y. Ugly. That is the only way to describe the atrocity that was the game between the Orlando Magic and Detroit Pistons at the Palace of Auburn Hills Tuesday night. Detroit shot 32% from the field and turned the ball over 15 times. Despite grabbing 17 offensive rebounds, they only had 8 2nd chance points. Orlando wasn't much better. They shot 42%, turned it over 15 times as well, managed only 6 2nd chance points on their 14 offensive rebounds, and missed 19 of their 25 3 pointers. The game was herky jerky, lacking flow and finesse. The two teams combined for 48 free throw attempts but there was opportunity for the officials to make that number double with all the clutching, grabbing, and bumping that contributed to the poor shooting.
Rodney Stuckey led the Pistons with 16 but sprained his wrist late in the game. He is listed as questionable for next game. Tayshaun Prince also had 16 but missed 12 of his 17 shots, including hitting just 3-15 from inside the arc (2-2 from 3 point land). Greg Monroe had 14 points and 11 rebounds. Orlando was led by Aaron Afflalo, the former Piston, with 17 points. J.J. Redick had 14 while Jameer Nelson had 12, missing 14 of his 19 attempts, including all 7 of his threes. Al Harrington had a quick 11 points of the bench in 16 minutes.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "The game was just disjointed. They were better at grinding out an ugly game than us. These games are the type you get in the playoffs and we have to learn to win them."
Detroit fell back under .500 at 20-21. Orlando improved to 16-25. Detroit takes a short trip to Chicago to take on the Bulls tomorrow evening. Chicago is 27-14.
