Pistons Out of Gas In 2nd Half, Fall To Mavs 94-81
Playing the 2nd night of a back to back, the Detroit Pistons left their energy in the locker room at halftime and fell 94-18 to the Dallas Mavericks. Detroit had a 4 point halftime lead but was outscored 51-34 in the 2nd half. Detroit shot a woeful 26% in the 2nd half and 34% for the game compared to the Mavericks 45%.
Dallas was led by Dirk Nowitzki with 21 points. Shawn Marion had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Chris Kaman also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Detroit was led by Greg Monroe with 18 points. Brandon Knight had 16, but shot just 6-23, including a woeful 2-12 from beyond the arc. Tayshaun Prince also struggled, hitting just 5 of 18 shots.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "We have to have better energy in the 2nd half. This is professional basketball. You play back to back nights. It just seemed like we had no legs in the 2nd half, which led to the horrible shooting. At the same time, our defense suffered. When you never get to set up after a made basket, it takes its toll on the defensive end."
Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said, "We didn't panic in the 1st half. We plugged away and then in the 2nd, when the opportunities were there, we took advantage. If we want to make the playoffs, we need to play every half of every game like we did the 2nd half tonight."
Detroit fell to 10-8 while Dallas improved to 7-10. Detroit now heads back home to take on Cleveland on Monday night. Cleveland is currently 9-8.

Pistons Sputter In 2nd Half For 2nd Straight Game, Lose To Cavs
This time there was no game the night before or jet lag to blame for their 2nd half performance. Detroit was blasted 62-39 in the 2nd half by the Cleveland Cavaliers, and ultimately lost 113-93. For the 2nd straight game, the Pistons carried a small lead (3 points) into the 2nd half, only to start firing bricks and failing to get stops on the defensive end. To make matters worse, near the end of the game, big man Greg Monroe tweaked his ankle and is set to be evaluated tomorrow by doctors. Detroit was outshot 54% to 40%. Cleveland also hit 9-17 threes while Detroit could only hit 3-17.
Monroe led Detroit with 20 points but only shot 8-24 from the field. Rodney Stuckey had 18 points and a team high 9 assists, while Brandon Knight added 17. Cleveland was led by Kyrie Irving with 27 points and 9 assists. Irving hit 10-13 from the field. Anderson Varejao had 22 points and 14 boards while rookie Dion Waiters scored 16.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank was unhapy with his team's defensive effort. "We have to be better. I know I keep saying that but in this league, if you want to make the playoffs and certainly if you want to win in the playoffs, you have to be able to get stops and play halfcourt and transition defense. Right now we aren't capable of that. I've said it before and I will say it again, shooting can come and go but defense and effort should be constants. Right now they aren't. That has to change."
Irving said, "Many people are surprised by our 10-8 start, but I can tell you none of the guys in this locker room are surprised. We have the talent to compete every night. We may be young, but that doesn't mean we can't play smart, efficient basketball every night."
Detroit fell to 10-9 while Cleveland passed them in the Central standings by improving to 10-8. Detroit plays Golden State at the Palace on Wednesday.

Knight Hits Another Buzzer Beater In Wild Win Over Warriors 120-119
For the 2nd time in five game, Piston point guard Brandon Knight hit the game winning shot in the final seconds to give Detroit a victory. Knight knocked down a 20 footer at the buzzer to give Detroit a hard-fought 120-119 victory over the Golden State Warriors. Neither team had a lead larger than 7 points in the game and there were 37 lead changes and 13 ties in the contest. Detroit pulled ahead on a three pointer by Rodney Stuckey with 46.3 seconds left, taking a 117-115 lead. Stephen Curry then knocked down a jumper to tie the game back up at 117 with 35 seconds left. Knight hit 1 of 2 freed throws with 20.3 seconds left, giving Detroit the one point lead. The Warriors thought they had the game won as David Lee broke free and received a pass from Curry to get a lay-in with just 2.4 seconds left. However, Knight got the inbounds pass and stepped inside the three point line to knock down the game-winning jumper, the ball falling through the net as the buzzer sounded. Detroit played the game without big man Greg Monroe, who is out with a sprained ankle.
Knight led Detroit with 24 points and 10 assists. Rodney Stuckey had 17 points and 8 assists and Tayshaun Prince just missed a double-double with 15 points and 9 rebounds. Jonas Jerebko, in his most extensive playing time of the season, had 14 points, while Andre Drummond had 13 points in his first career start. Also in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively, were Jason Maxiell and Kyle Singler. Golden State was led by Curry with 24 points and 11 assists. David Lee had 19 and Andrew Bogut had 18. Klay Thompson had 17 points but struggled with his shooting, knocking down just 5 of 19 shots., Jarret Jack led the Warrior bench with 16 points and 5 assists in just 16 minutes of action.
Piston coach Lawrence Frank said, "It was a gutty win. We played without Greg and some guys stepped up, took more shots, and put ourselves in a position to win. I continue to be concerned about our defense, particularly our interior. We gave up way too many points in the paint. That isn't just on Andre or Jonas or Jason or whoever, but rather the entire team. Interior defense starts with limiting penetration, rotating, and playing solid team defense. We need to do better."
Warriors coach Marc Jackson said, "Disappointing. We allowed them to shoot 52%, mostly on open mid-range jumpers. We were a step slow on defense all night and it cost us, even on the last play. We can't let a guy get that good of a look with just 2 seconds left."
Detroit improved to 11-9 while Golden State fell to 8-10. Detroit now waits for Chicago to come to town for a Friday night divisional showdown.

Pistons Lose To Bulls Suffocating Defense 90-76
The Detroit Pistons struggled to find offense Friday night, losing 90-76 to division rival Chicago. Last game's hero Brandon Knight had a horrific night, shooting just 3-20 as the team shot just 35%. Chicago overcame 21 turnovers by using stifling defense and rarely giving Detroit a shot without a hand in their face. Detroit played their 2nd game without Greg Monroe, who is out with a sprained ankle. Monroe is expected to play next game.
Chicago was led by Derrick Rose with 34 points. Carlos Boozer was one of 3 Bulls in double figure rebounds with 12 boards to go with 14 points. Luol Deng had 10 and 10 and Joakim Noah had 10 rebounds as well. Detroit was led by Rodney Stuckey with 29 points. Jason Maxiell had 14 points and Brandon Knight was the only other Piston in double figures with 10. Knight led the team with 6 assists, while Andre Drummond had 8 boards to lead Detroit.
Piston coach Lawrence Frank said, "We saw tonight where the next level is. Chicago played with playoff level intensity and playoff level defense on every singled possession. I plan on using this game tape to illustrate what I've been saying about needing to be focused on defense every possession. Chicago turned the ball over 21 times, shot 45% and still won by 14. That shows the power of defense."
Rose said, "That's what we hang our hat on. We pride ourselves on being the top defensive team in the league and we pride ourselves on giving 100% every night. But I won't lie, it's always nice to beat a rival and beat a divisional foe."
Detroit fell to 11-10 while Chicago improved to 14-4. Detroit takes a short flight to Cleveland right after the game for a Saturday night game against the Cavs. Cleveland is 10-10 on the year.

Pistons Lose Tight One To Cavs, Fall Back To .500 With Loss
Despite having Greg Monroe back in the lineup, the Detroit Pistons lost their 2nd straight divisional matchup, 91-89 to the Cleveland Cavaliers. It was a nip and tuck affair all evening, with the largest lead by either team being just five points. Anderson Varejao grabbed an offensive rebound and putback to seal the deal with 8 seconds left. Rodney Stuckey hit a layup with 2 seconds left on the clock but Detroit was unable to foul as time expired. For the 2nd straight game Detroit struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 1 of 11 three point attempts.
Detroit was led by the returning Monroe with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Stuckey had 16 while Brandon Knight had 14 and 11 assists. Jason Maxiell led the team with 12 rebounds. Cleveland was led by Varejao with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Kyrie Irving had 18 points and 8 assists while rookie Dion Waiters had 14 points.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank said, "It was tight all night. Neither team could pull away. We left some points at the free throw line and we missed some good looks beyond the arc. I thought our defense was pretty decent, we just failed to hit some shots and we didn't protect the defensive glass as well as we should, with the obvious example being Varejao's putback at the end of the game."
Detroit fell to 11-11 while Cleveland moved above .500 and passed the Pistons into 2nd place at 11-10. Detroit takes a day off before playing the 76ers in Philadelphia.

Pistons Get Back On Track With Easy Win Over Sixers, 117-103
After a modest two game losing streak, the Detroit Pistons came into the Fed Ex Center in Philadelphia needing a victory. The team didn't disappoint as Greg Monroe, Brandon Knight and the bench led the team to the road win. Detroit shot 51% for the game and had 55 bench points to just 26 for the 76ers. Detroit also hit 25 of 28 free throws (89%). Detroit took control early in the 1st quarter, extended their lead in the third, and coasted home in the 4th. The team also controlled Philly star Andrew Bynum with a combination of Greg Monroe, Andre Drummond, Jason Maxiell, and double teams. The different defenders and looks seemed to confuse both Bynum and the Philly guards trying to find him in the post. Bynum finished with a disappointing 11 points on 3-10 shooting.
Monroe led Detroit with 26 points. Charlie Villanueva came off the bench to score 17 in 20 minutes of action. Knight dished out 9 assists to go with his 16 points. Austin Daye was also a spark off the bench with 12 points in just 14 minutes. Jrue Holiday led the Sixers with 23 points and 13 assists. Jason Richardson had 16, while both Nick Young and Evan Turner had 14 points. Bynum led the team with 9 rebounds.
Pistons coach Lawrence Frank was pleased after the game. "I thought we played well. Offensively I liked how we found mismatches. We used Andre and Greg together to force Philly to guard one of them with Thaddeus Young and then when they countered with Spencer Hawes in tandem with Bynum, we had Charlie stretch the defense and hit a couple threes. I also liked how under control Brandon was. He didn't force shots and he only committed two turnovers."
Philadelphia coach Doug Collins said, "We did a poor job of finding Andrew in the post. But that wasn't why we lost. We lost on the defensive end. We struggled to guard the pick and roll, particularly with their bench guys, Villanueva and Daye. We also didn't double fast enough on Monroe or rotate out fast enough. He beat us in the post and he found space for that 15-18 foot jumper of his."
Detroit improved to 12-11 while dropping Philadelphia to 11-9. Detroit now await Denver, who is 13-8.

Turnovers Doom Pistons, Fall To Nuggets 101-88
You won't win too often with 22 turnovers, and Tuesday night was no exception for the Detroit Pistons. The Denver Nuggets rode those 22 Piston turnovers and 49% shooting to an easy victory. Detroit took a quick 13 point 1st quart lead, led by as many as 22, and coasted the rest of the way.
Ty Lawson led Denver with 27 points and 7 assists. Danillo Gallinari had 23 points and Andre Iguodala had 22. JaVale Mcgee led the Nuggets with 13 rebounds. Detroit was led by Brandon Knight with 23, Rodney Stuckey 18, and Greg Monroe with 15.
Piston coach Lawrence Frank said, "You don't take care of the ball, you don't win. It was a team effort in turnovers. Brandon, Tayshaun, Austin, Greg, and others all struggled. Poor decisions, inattention to detail, it was all out there. You can't give the other team 13 more shots and 4 more free throws. Those are just too many more opportunities to beat you."
Nuggets coach George Karl said, "I liked the pressure our defense put on Detroit. We forced them into bad decisions. We made sure the passing lanes were clogged and hounded their ball handlers. Great effort."
Detroit fell back to .500 at 12-12 while Denver improved to 14-8. Detroit has two days off before heading to face the Brooklyn Nets. It will Detroit's first game in the new Barclay's Center in Brooklyn. New Jersey will probably still be without Brook Lopez and Andray Blatche, leaving them heavily reliant on their backcourt and perimeter players for scoring.
