Coach Danny Carmichael Signs a 5 Year Extension

Radford, VA -- Head Men's Basketball Coach Danny Carmichael interviewed for the Syracuse coaching position but didn't get it. After that he ended up signing a 5 year extension with Radford as he was offered coaching positions from Ohio University and a number of other mid-major schools.

In 3 years on the job, Carmichael has amassed an overall record of 65-29 (.691%) and a conference record of 30-12 (.714%).

This past year saw many program records broken and many program firsts as well:

Radford broke their record of most wins in a season by putting up 31 wins. The previous high was 23 back in the 1977-1978 season. This was also the first time Radford has gotten 30 wins in a single year.

This was the highest team win percentage in program history. The Highlanders went 31-4 which is a win percentage of .886%.

Radford broke their record for most conference wins and highest win percentage in conference play as they went 13-1 which is .929%.

The Highlanders also had their longest win streak in program history, which was 14 games.

Depending on how long Coach Carmichael sticks around, this Radford program has a BRIGHT future with him at the helm.

          3 Highlanders Leave Basketball Program

Radford, VA -- Three Radford role players have decided to leave the program:

          Sophomore PF Cordell Darden
          Sophomore SF Landon Snow
          Junior PF Drake Conn

Darden was a 2nd Team All-Conference selection last year and was named to the All Conference Freshman Team. Darden had a decreased role this year because of Freshman PF Brandon Ray. Darden finished his career at Radford averaging 7.4 PPG and 5.6 RPG.

Snow was an All Conference Freshman team selection last year, but his role decreased because of Freshman SF Emmett Bonner. Snow finished his career at Radford averaging 6.6 PPG, 4.2 RPG, and 1.0 BPG.

Conn would have been the only Senior on the roster next year and the first player to go from their Freshman to Senior year under Coach Carmichael. Each of the past 2 years, Conn's role has decreased. Conn finished his career at Radford averaging 5.6 PPG and 3.9 RPG.

Because of these 3 departures, Coach Carmichael now has 7 available scholarships to fill in the Spring Signing Period.

            2010 Recruiting Class

Just when you couldn't thought Radford can't do any better in recruiting... Danny Carmichael goes and gets this 2010 Recruiting Class.

The 2010 Recruiting Class originally had 4 scholarships available, but after 3 players left the team, Carmichael had to scramble and sign 7 players instead of 4. But, he did not disappoint.

This Radford Class is ranked as the 18th best Recruiting Class in the Country, and the #3 Mid-Major Recruiting Class in the country. All 7 players signed are 3 star prospects.

            Josh Tigert (137)#46 PGHSMontgomery, AL6'1186
            Reed White (194)#7 CHSWashington D.C.6'9234
Ron Bills (209)#38 SFHSCoral Gables, FL6'6216
            Jermaine Wolfe (260)#12 CHSAlexandria, VA7'0227

Headlining this class is SG Freddy Hacker, from Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Hacker is rated as the #28 SG in the country and the #116 overall player in the country. Hacker's biggest strengths are his on ball defense and his ability to drive and finish at the rim.

Quite possibly the best player from this class is SF Latece Mathis from Paterson, NJ. Mathis is rated as the #25 SF in the country and the #128 overall player in the country. Mathis' biggest strengths are on ball defense, ability to score around the rim, and jump shooting. Mathis could very well be the Mid-Major version of LeBron James... This kid is GOOD!

C Melvin Reeves is from Lawrence, KS. Reeves is rated as the #3 C in the country and the #130 overall player in the country. Reeves' strengths is his ability to finish at the rim, rebounding, and shot blocking. Reeves is going to play PF for the Highlanders.

PG Josh Tigert is from Montgomery, AL. Tigert is rated as the #46 PG in the country and the #137 overall player in the country. Tigert's biggest strengths are his mid-range jump shooting, speed, and he may be the best on ball defender on the entire team. Don't be surprised if Tigert is starting at Point Guard next season.

C Reed White is from Washington D.C. White is rated as the #7 C in the country and the #194 overall player in the country. White's strengths are his ability to finish at the rim, rebounding, and he's extremely fast for a Center. White gives the Highlanders much needed size in the post after they lost their two tallest players this off-season.

SF Ron Bills is from Coral Gables, FL. Bills is rated as the #38 SF and the #209 overall player in the country. Bills' strengths is rebounding, mid range shooting, and he is probably the best dunker on the team. Bills is the most underrated prospect in this class.

Lastly, C Jermaine Wolfe is from Alexandria, VA. Wolfe is rated as the #12 C in the country and the #260 overall player in the country. Wolfe's strengths are his ability to finish at the rim, shot blocking, and rebounding. Along with White, Wolfe gives the Highlanders much needed size at the Center position.

Coach Carmichael also said that his two main assistant coaches will coach the teams as Carmichael spectates. Assistant Jerome Danielson is in charge of the Red Team and Assistant Wade Bonner is in charge of the White Team.

Carmichael also said that both Danielson and Bonner had a draft to choose their teams... Here are the Red and White Team Rosters.

Good luck balancing enough minutes to keep everyone happy or you will end up with all the guy's who just led you to a 30 win season leaving you this year too.

I am surprised you are not throwing a redshirt on Hacker,Bills and Wolfe

I will and I am redshirting those 3... Forgot to make a note of that in my preview post.

                        Meet Radford Coach Danny Carmichael

Radford, VA -- The Radford Highlanders won just 8 games in the 2006-2007 season and needed a new coach in the off-season. Meanwhile, Danny Carmichael was a high school basketball coach in Virginia who had just led his team to a State Championship. Radford saw this and came calling.

The 25 year old Carmichael jumped at the opportunity to coach in Division 1 basketball and he became the youngest Division 1 head coach ever.

In the 2007-2008 season Radford improved to 13-15, in year two they improved to 21-10 and made just their 2nd NCAA Tournament appearance in program history.

Then, in 2009-2010, Radford went a school record 31-4 and got to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.

How is Carmichael taking a historically mediocre program and turning them into a Small Conference/Mid-Major power? The answer is simple. Recruiting.

In Carmichael's 2008 recruiting class, his first as Radford head coach, Carmichael pulled in the 52nd best class in the country, which at the time, was a program record. But, Carmichael would go on to top that... Twice. In 2009, Carmichael pulled in the 32nd best recruiting class, which included the #8 Center in the country and 4 Top 200 players in the country.

But, none would top the class he has coming in this year. The 2010 class marked the first time a Small Conference School has ever gotten a Top 25 Recruiting Class. Carmichael signed 7 3* players and 4 of them are Top 150 players in the country.

With the results he's producing and the high level of recruiting, Coach Danny Carmichael might be Division 1 basketball's best kept secret.

November 5, 2010: Radford vs. Sacramento State

Radford blows out Sacramento State in the First Round of the Hangar Challenge!

Radford was led by Sophomore SG Kenny Andrews who scored a game high and career high 24 points on 7/12 shooting and 9/13 from the free throw line. Andrews also had 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal. Freshman PF Melvin Reeves had a great first collegiate game. Reeves finished with 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals in the game. Sophomore SF Emmett Bonner came off the bench and finished with 12 points and 6 rebounds since Freshman SF Latece Mathis was in foul trouble most of the game. Sophomore PF Brandon Ray also came off the bench and finished with 8 points and 13 rebounds. One negative thing from this game was the massive amount of turnovers committed by the Highlanders... I do believe we can chalk this up to first game jitters with this young team and players assuming new roles.

Sacramento State was led by Senior Jevon Caporn who finished with 17 points on 6/13 shooting, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Junior SG Jay Beauford chipped in 9 points but Beauford also had 7 rebounds and 4 steals in the game. Freshman C Fernandez Israel scored 8 points in his first collegiate game, but also turned the ball over a game high 7 times.
