Re: The Coaching Legacy of Danny Carmichael (CH 2K8)
January 7, 2012: Gonzaga vs. San Francisco
What a finish to an already great game! San Francisco led 48-45 at halftime and a late Gonzaga run tied the game up with 53 seconds left.
On San Francisco's ensuing possession, SF Georgy Hobbs attempted a Mid Range Jumper but missed it and Gonzaga Freshman PF Vernon Lopez grabbed the rebound with 24 seconds left in the game.
Instead of calling a timeout, Coach Carmichael just let his team run a play with about 17 seconds left. With 5 seconds left, SG Chester French found himself open and PG Wade Spaulding hit him with a pass. French then fired up a 3 point attempt and it went in with 0.8 seconds remaining in the game which gave Gonzaga the 79-76 lead! San Francisco could not put up a shot in time which gave Gonzaga an exciting win to open up Conference Play.
Gonzaga was led by Senior SG Chester French who scored a game high 31 points while shooting 10/20 from the floor. He was red hot shooting 3's in this game as he made 6 of his 10 attempts from 3 point range. He also added 7 rebounds to his stat line. Freshman PF Vernon Lopez had one of his performance of the year as he finished with 13 points (3/4 from the floor, 7/7 from the charity stripe) and 9 rebounds. Then, Senior PG Jaycee Cleland came off the bench and played extremely well on the offensive side of the ball as he scored 11 points off the bench in just 17 minutes of playing time. However, Gonzaga really lucked out as their offensive rebounding paved the way for open shots which gave the Bulldogs a stellar shooting percentage. The Bulldogs turned the ball over 23 times in this game. That absolutely can not happen again if they want to win the WCC.
San Francisco was really carried by two players. SF, Georgy Hobbs scored a team high 23 points on 8/21 shooting, 4/8 from 3 point range, and 3/3 from the free throw line. He also grabbed 9 boards in this game. SG Khalif Luber had a fantastic all around game. Probably one of the best stat lines we'll see all year. Luber finished with 6/12 from the floor, 3/6 from 3 point range, and 6/10 from the free throw line. He also had 8 assists, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. PF Trent Bright had a solid night on the defensive end of the court. He finished with 6 points, 11 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocks.

January 14, 2012: Portland vs. Gonzaga
A strong second half propels Gonzaga (12-4, 2-0) past Portland (9-9, 0-3) by a final score of 85-69.
Gonzaga was led by 5'7" Junior PG Wade Spaulding who was the leading scorer in this game with 23 in 28 minutes of playing time. Spaulding finished 8/14 shooting from the floor, 4/8 from 3 point range, and 3/4 from the free throw line. He also had 6 assists and 5 rebounds. However, Senior SG Chester French finished with 21 points on 8/15 shooting from the floor and 5/9 from 3 point range. He also had 7 rebounds, 7 assists, and 2 steals. Then, Sophomore PF Vern Flowers came off the bench and had an excellent shooting performance in just 14 minutes of playing time. Flowers scored 10 points on 4/5 shooting and was a perfect 2/2 from the free throw line. Sophomore C Chester Reaves also had arguably his best performance of the season as he scored 9 points on 4/5 shooting from the floor and grabbed 7 boards.
Portland was led by a couple strong performances from players off the bench. Senior PG Jeff Blevins led the Pilots in scoring as he scored 14 points on 4/6 shooting from the floor, 2/3 from 3 point range, and 4/4 from the free throw line in just 19 minutes of playing time. Junior SF Daryl Schneiderman also had a strong shooting performance in his 18 minutes of playing time off the bench. He scored 10 points off 3/6 shooting from the floor and also hit 4 free throws. The only other Pilot player with over 10 points was Senior PF Darien Shaw who scored 13 points on 3/6 shooting from the floor and 7/10 from the free throw line. Sophomore Clark Leslie also had a pretty solid performance as he added 8 points and dished out 9 assists.

Re: The Coaching Legacy of Danny Carmichael (CH 2K8)
My apologies to those who may not be a fan of this decision, but I've had this 2011-2012 season finished for quite some time and I would really like to move onto my second season at Gonzaga since finding time to make posts has been pretty tough.
So, in this post I'll give the results for the season and I'll begin posting updates again for the NCAA Tournament.
Again, my apologies, but I would really like to keep this legacy moving.

Re: The Coaching Legacy of Danny Carmichael (CH 2K8)
March 16, 2012: #9 Gonzaga vs. #8 BYU
After a very successful year, the Gonzaga Bulldogs' 2011-12 season would come to an end today as they lose a hard fought game to #8 BYU by a final score of 77-69.
This was a horrible matchup for the Bulldogs as they were severely undersized as their only true Center, Chester Reaves was injured. So 6'7" Vern Flowers was starting at Center. BYU just bullied Gonzaga with their size all game.
Gonzaga was led by Senior PG Jaycee Cleland who came off the bench and scored 15 points on an impressive 6/9 shooting from the floor, 2/3 from 3 point range, and 1/2 from the free throw line. Sophomore SG Elton Briggs was the only other Bulldog who scored in double figures as he put up 12 points off the bench on 5/10 shooting from the floor and was 2/4 from 3 point range. Briggs also grabbed 6 boards. Gonzaga's bench players had to play MUCH more than they planned because every single Gonzaga starter was in foul trouble. In fact, Gonzaga's best two players, PG Wade Spaulding and SG Chester French, both fouled out of this game.
BYU was led by Junior PF Borislav Hargett who had a fantastic offensive game. He scored 24 points on 8/13 from the floor and was 8/11 from the free throw line. He also grabbed 5 boards and blocked 5 shots. Junior PF Cedrick Nutter came off the bench and scored 14 points on 6/13 shooting from the floor and went 2/4 from the free throw line in just 20 minutes of playing time. Freshman Center Sylvester Juan Barea scored 11 points on 3/4 shooting and was 5/6 from the Free Throw line. Juan Barea also grabbed 6 boards in the win.
