    WCC Tournament Round 1 Results

    March 7, 2014: #13 Gonzaga 68, San Diego 52

In this extremely low scoring game, Gonzaga is advancing thanks to their incredible defense effort. They applied pressure all the way down the court and because of that, they forced a season high 23 turnovers.

Offensively, Gonzaga was led by Sophomore C Doug Montgomery who finished with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Montgomery made 5 of 13 shots and made all 3 free throw attempts. He also blocked 3 shots and came up with 2 steals.

Sophomore SF Sammy Sola finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in 32 minutes of playing time. Sola shot 4-10 from the floor and 4-9 from the free throw line.

Junior PF Vernon Lopez also finished with 12 points and 6 rebounds. Lopez shot 4-8 from the floor, 2-2 from 3 point range, and 2-4 from the free throw line.

The Toreros were led by Senior PF Ken Hoyer who finished one rebound shy of a double double in his final collegiate game. Hoyer scored 14 points while making 6 of 13 shot attempts, grabbed 9 rebounds and added to his stat line with 3 steals and 2 blocks.

With this win, Gonzaga will now take on #4 Loyola Marymount in the 2nd Round of the WCC Tournament. Loyola Marymount advanced in the tournament by defeating #5 Santa Clara by a score of 80-70.

        WCC Tournament 2nd Round Results

        March 8, 2014: #13 Gonzaga 91, Loyola Marymount 60

Gonzaga greatly improved on their 1st round performance as they completely dismantled the Loyola Marymount Lions to move on to the WCC Championship Game.

Sophomore C Doug Montgomery led the way for the Bulldogs as he scored a game high 23 points and pulled down 8 boards. Montgomery shot 9-17 from the floor, 1-3 from 3 point range, and 4-4 from the free throw line. He also blocked 2 shots. Montgomery and Lopez played marvelous defense against Loyola Marymount's Willie Medina.

Speaking of Lopez, he also had a great offensive night. He scored 18 points on 6-13 shooting from the floor, 1-3 from 3 point range, and 5-7 from the free throw line. Lopez also pulled down 5 rebounds and blocked 2 shots.

Freshman SG Timothy Bernard played 10x better tonight than he did against San Diego. Bernard finished with 11 points on 4-5 shooting from the floor, 2-3 from 3 point range, and 1-2 from the free throw line. He also grabbed 3 rebounds and dished out 2 assists. He did all of this in just 13 minutes of playing time.

Gonzaga dodged a HUGE bullet that Loyola Marymount's 7'3", 306 lbs. Junior Center Vincent Snipes didn't play in this game due to injury. Because of Snipes' injury, they could focus their post defense around Willie Medina. So every time he touched the ball he was double teamed... And the pressure got to him.

Medina finished with 9 points and grabbed an absurd 18 rebounds. However, he only made 1 out of 13 shot attempts.

Senior PG Collis Cannon finished with a team high 18 points despite missing 9 shots. However, he was a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe. He also finished with 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block.

Sophomore SF Dominik Callahan scored 12 points in just 15 minutes off the bench. He made 5 of 7 shots including 2 of 3 3 point attempts.

With this dominating win, the Bulldogs have a lot of momentum heading into the WCC Championship Game as they will take on the only team who have beaten them this year... The Portland Pilots.

          WCC Tournament Championship Results

          March 9, 2014: #13 Gonzaga 82, Portland 57

After dropping two games to Portland during the regular season, Gonzaga gets their revenge as they defeat them in the WCC Championship Game.

Gonzaga was led by Sophomore SF Sammy Sola who had the game of his life. Sola finished with 31 pionts on 12-23 shooting, 4-7 from 3 point range, and 3-4 from the free throw line. Sola also pulled down 9 rebounds.

Sophomore SG Keithan Krager was the only other Bulldog player to score at least 10 points. He scored exactly 10 points on 2-5 shooting from 3 and 4-4 from the free throw line.

The only player that scored more than 9 points for Portland was C Anis Forth. Forth scored 15 points on 3-10 shooting from the floor but was a near perfect 9-10 from the free throw line.

A huge reason as to why Gonzaga pulled this game off was Portland's star PG, Clark Leslie, didn't control the game like he did in their previous two meetings. Gonzaga also did a great job of holding onto the ball as they only turned it over 11 times. They also did a great job on perimeter defense as Portland missed 16 3's over the course of the game.

As a team, Gonzaga grabbed 41 rebounds while Portland only had 23 rebounds.

It was a fantastic all around performance by Gonzaga as they look to grab a #2, #3, or #4 seed in the NCAA Tournament... With the #3 seed being the most likely.

                  NCAA Tournament: 2nd Round Results

                  March 22, 2014: #2 Gonzaga 87, #10 Xavier 81

Thanks to a run late in the 2nd half, Gonzaga pulled away to advance to their first Sweet 16 in the Danny Carmichael era.

Gonzaga was led by Sophomore C Doug Montgomery who scored a game high 22 points. Montgomery was extremely efficient shooting the ball tonight as he went 10-13 shooting from the floor in 31 minutes of playing time. Montgomery staying out of foul trouble was HUGE for Gonzaga winning this game.

Junior PF Vernon Lopez finished with 14 points and 6 rebounds in 27 minutes of playing time. Lopez shot 4-9 from the floor but shot a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.

Sophomore SF Sammy Sola was one rebound short of a double double. He finished with 13 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Sola shot 5-11 from the floor and 3-3 from the free throw line.

While Montgomery, Lopez, and Sola staying out of foul trouble was big for Gonzaga, they won this game because of FREE THROW SHOOTING!! As a team, the Bulldogs went 27-31 from the charity stripe. If they shot their like, usual 65%, they would have lost this game by 1 point. Not sure where this came from, but hopefully they can continue this efficiency at the free throw line for the rest of the tournament.

Xavier was led by Junior SG Ricky Guerrero who was the only starter who scored more than 9 points. Guerrero did a little bit of everything for the Musketeers as he finished with 19 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists. He also shot 6-11 from the floor, 3-6 from 3 point range, and 4-4 from the free throw line.

Sophomore PG Derrick Schultz came off the bench and provided a huge spark for the Musketeers as he scored 12 points in 16 minutes of playing time. Schultz made 4 of 5 3 pointers that he took while also pulling down 3 rebounds and dishing out 2 assists.

This was a big win for Gonzaga as Xavier's starting lineup was one of the more talented starting 5's they've faced all year. However, it gets much harder next week as they'll play the #3 seeded Miami Hurricane... Who won the ACC regular season title, but lost to Clemson in the ACC Tournament Championship Game.

Congrats on getting retribution in the conference tournament for those two losses to Portland. How good are the rest of the teams in the tournament ratings wise? I know the whole "take it one game at a time" mantra but is there any team that you think will be a tough draw should you run into them?

Oh yeah, the win in the WCC Championship Game against Portland was so satisfying lol.

And I added the team overalls in the last bracket update post. To answer your question though, if I had to choose one team from our side of the bracket that scares me the most, it would have to be Michigan State (93 ovr). They're extremely talented with great depth and a ton of talented Freshmen and Sophomores.

On the other side of the bracket, IF we were lucky enough to get to the Championship Game, Texas (95 ovr) and Florida (95 ovr) terrify me. They're the most talented teams in college basketball this year. Neither team has a single weakness.

But, if I'm being totally honest, I'd be completely stunned if we won the Championship this year. Not only are we by far the youngest team left standing in the tournament, we're not close to being the most talented team in the country, and the reason why our record is so good is because we had an insanely easy schedule. We only played 3 teams all year who made the NCAA Tournament... Louisiana Tech (#13 Seed), Michigan (#7 Seed), and Portland (#8 Seed). And that right there is basically why we were able to have just 2 losses throughout the regular season when 9 of our top 10 players are either Freshmen or Sophomores.

                          Thanks for the comment though!

                            NCAA Tournament: Sweet 16 Results

                            March 28, 2014: #2 Gonzaga 85, #3 Miami 72

Gonzaga and Miami went toe to toe for most of the 1st half. However, a late 1st half run by the Bulldogs proved to the difference in this game as Gonzaga will move on to the Elite 8.

Junior PF Vernon Lopez and Sophomore SF Sammy Sola carried Gonzaga in this game. Lopez scored a game high 25 points on 7-12 shooting from the floor, 2-3 from 3 point range, and a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line.

Sammy Sola continued his strong tournament play as he scored 18 points on 5-14 shooting from the floor, 3-8 from 3 point range, and 5-6 from the free throw line.

Despite the fact that Gonzaga put up 85 points, no other player on the roster scored more than 9 points.

Miami was led by Sixth Man, Junior PG Shane Cooperwood. Cooperwood came off the bench to lead the Hurricanes in scoring with 16 points in 20 minutes of playing time. He was extremely efficient scoring the ball as he finished 5-7 shooting from the floor, 4-6 from 3 point range, and 2-2 from the charity stripe.

Junior SG Kendrick Modrovich finished with the game's only double double. He scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in 38 minutes of playing time. He also added 4 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals to his stat line as he did a little bit of everything in the Hurricanes' losing effort.

Senior SG Oswaldo Cox scored 12 points on 3-6 shooting from the floor and 6-8 from the free throw line. And Senior PG Dan Cuffle chipped in 10 points while dishing out 5 assists and pulling down 5 rebounds.

With this win, Gonzaga will play the #1 seeded Kansas State Wildcats in the Elite 8 as they completely dismantled #5 Houston in their Sweet 16 matchup by a score of 90-58.

If Gonzaga can beat Miami, they should feel pretty good about their chances with Kansas State. While the Kansas State starting unit is better than Miami's, their depth is far worse than the Hurricanes'.

                                NCAA Tournament: Elite 8 Results

                                March 30, 2014: #2 Gonzaga 79, #1 Kansas State 61

Just like their Sweet 16 game, Gonzaga went toe to toe with Kansas State in the first half. The teams kept swapping baskets, leads kept changing and at halftime, Gonzaga held the narrow 31-29 lead.

However, in the 2nd half, Kansas State's lack of depth and lack of frontcourt talent killed them as Gonzaga went on a huge 12-0 run midway through the 2nd half. That run ultimately led Gonzaga to their 79-61 win which advances them to the Final 4.

Junior PF Vernon Lopez led the way for the Bulldogs as he scored 18 points on an extremely efficient 8-10 shooting. He also shot 1-2 from 3 point range and 1-2 from the free throw line. He also pulled down 8 rebounds, blocked 3 shots, and came up with 2 steals.

Sophomore C Doug Montgomery scored a game high 19 points while also grabbing 8 rebounds, just like Vernon Lopez. However, Montgomery missed 12 shot attempts tonight. But, he went 9-11 from the charity stripe which proved to be huge for Gonzaga down the stretch.

Junior PG Herman Eldridge led the way for Kansas State. The Junior came off the bench and scored 12 points while coming up with a staggering 6 steals in 19 minutes of playing time.

Junior starting PG Curtis Mack was the only other Wildcat player to reach double digits in the scoring column. Mack scored 11 points, but missed 9 shots and all 4 of his 3 point attempts. In his 35 minutes of playing time he also came down with 3 rebounds and dished out 3 assists.

Another big blow to Kansas State in this game was the fact that they had two players foul out and two others finish the game with 4 fouls. Gonzaga consistently attack the paint in hopes of getting the limited amount of bigs on the Kansas State roster into foul trouble... And that plan worked like a charm.

Up next, Gonzaga will face their toughest test yet as they will take on #3 Michigan State. The Spartans defeated #8 seeded Stanford by a score of 82-68 in their Elite 8 matchup.

This will be the first time that Danny Carmichael coached team has made it to the Final 4... Can this extremely young and inexperienced team somehow go all the way and win the first title in Gonzaga Men's Basketball history?
