    2012 Recruiting Class

Gonzaga got it's second and final commitment for their 2012 Signing Class... And it sure was a good one.

Sammy Sola, a Small Forward from Garden Grove, California, committed to Gonzaga as soon as the Off-Season Signing Period began. Sola is the #5 SF in the country and is rated as the #27 overall player in the country.

Sola is definitely a slashing SF as his best attributes are his shot close to the basket along with an excellent dunk rating. He's also a fantastic rebounder and has great speed for his size.

Even with these two outstanding players signed on to play for Gonzaga, this recruiting class only ranks as the #86 Class in the country.

Sucks to be bounced out in the first round like that. Hopefully you can get further this year.

The WCC was surprisingly weak last year, aside from your squad, of course.

I'm expecting about 25 or so wins this year along with a WCC Regular Season AND WCC Tournament Championship. I'm not near my PS3 now, but if I remember correctly, I believe the second highest rated overall team is Portland at 81 or 82. It may not be Portland, but I know for a fact the 2nd highest rated team in the WCC is 81 or 82 overall. We have an overall rating of 86. So, I believe winning both the WCC Regular Season Championship and WCC Tournament Championship is definitely doable.

But, as long as we get at least a #9 seed or higher, I really like our chances of getting to at least the second round.

              Thanks for the comment!

A solid recruiting class to match their National Championship. I remember seeing that all 3 or 4 of their Freshmen on their National Championship team were 80+ overall with A- or higher potential. That is scary good.

So, you match those Freshmen, with 3 more 5 stars and a highly rated 4 star player. They're going to be tough to beat for a while.

                Also, thanks for following!

I was surprised to look at the records of the WCC teams. One thing that I found odd was there were about 4 teams (including Gonzaga) that had an overall of 82 in the WCC. Yet, we blow through Conference play like it was nothing, while Santa Clara who was also 82 overall went 12-17 throughout the season.

                But, thanks for the comment!

                  November 17, 2012: Gonzaga @ Louisiana Tech

This game came down to a 2nd half slug fest, but Gonzaga prevails winning their opening game by a score of 80-72.

Gonzaga Senior leader Wade Spaulding has now taken on a much bigger scoring role with the graduation of Senior SG Chester French. Spaulding finished with a team high 20 points on a 6/15 shooting performance. Even though those numbers don't look to good, he made all 5 free throws he attempted, and shot 43% from 3 point range. Sophomore PF Vernon Lopez played a game high 35 minutes and was very effective on defense. Lopez finished with 10 points, 7 rebounds, and the only 4 Gonzaga blocks.

Gonzaga's highly touted Freshmen played solid first games. Former #1 C in the country, Doug Montgomery, scored 10 points in his college debut. He finished 4/6 shooting from the field and surprisingly made 2/3 3 point attempts. SF Sammy Sola made every shot he took but only played 12 minutes as he fouled out of the game. Sola finished with 7 points on 2/2 shooting from the floor, 2/2 from the free throw line, and 4 assists. Those two seemed a bit rattled at first, as they played their first collegiate game on the road. Also worth mentioning is 7'0" Walk On PF/C Gabriel Temple. He played very well in his college debut scoring 7 points and grabbing 6 boards in 21 minutes of playing time off the bench.

Louisiana Tech was led by Senior PG Marty Christy who had a phenomenal offensive game scoring a game high 23 points on 7/16 shooting and also dished out 5 assists. Junior SG Walter Skivolocke added 15 points of his own on 4/10 shooting, but he shot 3/6 from 3 point range. He also grabbed 7 boards.

                    November 20, 2012: Gonzaga @ Radford

Radford goes on a late second half run to keep their undefeated record as they defeat Gonzaga by a final score of 89-85.

Gonzaga was led by Senior PG Wade Spaulding who scored 23 points on 8/18 shooting. He also grabbed 4 boards and dished out 3 assists. Sophomore PF Vernon Lopez once again had a solid outing as he finished with 13 points on 4/9 shooting from the floor and 4/6 shooting from the free throw line. For the second straight game, he blocked 4 shots. Freshman Walk-On PF/C Gabriel Temple turned in a phenomenal performance as he scored 14 points on 6/7 shooting and he also made 2/3 free throws. Gonzaga continued their hot shooting as they shot 52% from the floor. However, their horrible free throw shooting is what lost them the game as they missed some costly late free throws.

Radford was led by a very strong scoring performance from Junior PF Melvin Reeves who scored a game high 25 points on 8/16 shooting from the floor and 9/11 from the free throw line. Senior C Marquis Petersen finished with a double double as he dominated the paint most of the night and forced Gonzaga Freshman C Doug Montgomery into foul trouble early. Petersen finished with 15 points and 10 boards. Senior SG Kenny Andrews had an outstanding all around game as he finished with 10 points on 3/4 shooting from the floor and 4/4 from the free throw line. He also added 7 rebounds and 5 steals to his stat line.

                      November 27, 2012: Sacramento State @ Gonzaga

Gonzaga just simply over powers Sacramento State and easily wins their home opener, 90-67.

Coach Carmichael used reserves much of this game as Gonzaga jumped out to a huge lead to begin the game. The leading scorer for the Bulldogs' was Freshman Walk On big man Gabriel Temple who continues to play out of his mind. Temple finished with a game high 17 points on 5/7 shooting and 7/9 from the free throw line. He also grabbed 5 boards and blocked 4 shots. Tonight was the coming out party for highly touted Freshman SF Sammy Sola. Sola finished with his first career double double as he scored 16 points (7 of which came at the free throw line) and grabbed 12 rebounds. He also dished out 5 assists and had 3 steals. Sophomore PF Vernon Lopez continues his strong play as he finished with 14 points and 9 rebounds. Then, Franklin Axton had a very efficient game shooting the ball as he scored 11 points on 5/9 shooting in just 11 minutes off the bench.

Sacramento State only had two players score over 8 points in this game. The top performance was from Center Brandon Klatsky who finished with a double double by scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. The second player with over 8 points was backup Center Fernando Israel as he scored 10 points in just 14 minutes of playing time.

Next Game: December 1, @ Utah State (6-1)

                        December 1, 2012: Gonzaga @ Utah State

Utah State destroys Gonzaga in the second half, outscoring them by 21 points in route to an 89-70 victory.

Gonzaga was led by Senior PG Wade Spaulding who had a fantastic stat line... Until you get to the turnover column. Spaulding finished with a game high 22 points on 6/14 shooting from the floor, 4/9 shooting from 3 point range, and 6/6 shooting from the free throw line. He also finished with 8 rebounds and 8 assists. But, he committed 7 turnovers which is simply unacceptable. Sophomore PF Vernon Lopez finished the game with 11 points and 4 rebounds. Once again, Lopez finished with 4 blocks. He has had 4 blocks in 3 of Gonzaga's 4 games this year. One thing that was pleasantly surprising was the fact that Gonzaga shot 18/20 from the free throw line. But, they kept shooting themselves in the foot with all the turnovers.

Utah State was led by Senior SG Ricardo Hurley who had a fantastic game. Hurley finished with 21 points (10 of which came from the free throw line), 7 assists, 6 rebounds, and 3 steals in 35 minutes of playing time. Hurley's Pro Buzz is currently labeled as "Dark Horse", but with performances like these, it'll be hard for him not to get drafted. Another standout performance was from Senior PF Buster Coggins who finished with a double double by scoring 20 points (9 of which cam from the free throw line) and grabbing 10 boards. 4* Freshman SF Dannorriss Waters came off the bench and played a very good game with a stat line of: 11 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in 23 minutes of playing time.

December 8, 2012: San Jose State @ Gonzaga

Gonzaga is stunned on their home court by San Jose State as Wade Spaulding misses a game winning jumper as time expires. So, the Spartans go on to upset the Bulldogs by the final score of 71-70 in a thriller.

Gonzaga was led by Senior PG Wade Spaulding who scored 15 points (6 of which came from the free throw line). He also had 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals. Sophomore Vernon Lopez finished with 11 points on 5/11 shooting from the floor. Freshman SF Sammy Sola finished with a pretty solid stat line of: 10 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 block. However, Gonzaga lost this game once again because of a horrible 2nd half performance. That will more than likely change as we get further into the season and Sola/Montgomery get more playing time and start playing better.

San Jose was led by Junior SG Kinzey Stiles who finished with 13 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks in 33 minutes of playing time. Then, Senior SF George Glover came off the bench and shot a perfect 5/5 from the floor including 2/2 from 3 point range. However he was 1/2 from the free throw line. Glover finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds in 22 minutes of playing time.

The final day of the early signing period is tomorrow, December 9.

Next Game: December 12, vs. UC Santa Barbara (0-7)

                            Early Signing Period: Recruiting Update

With the close of the early signing period, Coach Carmichael and the Gonzaga Bulldogs' filled 3 of their 6 available scholarships for the 2013 Recruiting Class. Two of the signees are 4 star prospects, while the final signee is a 3 star prospect.

The highest rated commitment is a 5'11, 160 lb. Point Guard, Michael Yates, who hails from Dallas, TX. Yates is a 4* prospect and is rated as the #22 Point Guard in the country and the #65 Overall player in the country. This was a huge commitment for Danny Carmichael and staff since the only Point Guard on the current roster is Senior Wade Spaulding. Yates' #1 concern was playing time, and there will be the opportunity for lots of it at the Point Guard position next year. Yates is exactly what you want in a Point Guard. He is very quick, a good ball handler, a good passer, and can knock down a 3 if needed. This is a very good pickup for the Bulldogs

A campus visit this past week swayed this next signee into becoming a Gonzaga Bulldog. Ashton Reece, a 6'8", 206 point SF from El Paso, TX has signed with Gonzaga. Reece is a 4* SF and is rated as the #15 SF in the country and the #69 Overall player in the country. Reece will also have an opportunity for lots of playing time since the only returner SF from this years squad for the 2013-2014 season will be Sammy Sola. So, Reece will be the primary backup for Sola next season. Reece will be a star while at Gonzaga. He is an excellent defender and a 3 point marksman.

Once again, a campus visit in the last week of the early signing period persuade this final signee to ultimately choose Gonzaga. Timothy Bernard is a 6'3" 180 lb. SG from Naperville, IL. Bernard is a 3* prospect and is rated as the #35 SG in the country and the #122 Overall player in the country. Bernard may get forced into a starting role next year as the most talented SG on the roster next year will be Elton Briggs... Who hasn't proved in any way that he could be the starter next season. So, a lot of playing time could be in store for Bernard as well. Bernard is without a doubt a slashing/high-flying guard who should throw down some incredible dunks in the upcoming years at Gonzaga.

You appear to have a solid class for next year! Keep it up!

I definitely need this class to be solid or else next year won't be a very good season. Cause right now we have 4 Seniors on the current roster and we had 6 scholarships available. Along with the 6 scholarships available, I've already had to give Franklin Axton a pep talk. So, he may end up transferring and I might end up with 7 scholarships if the future pep talks don't seem to convince him to stay.

But, as of now the 2013-2014 depth chart looks like this (assuming the worst, that Franklin Axton does transfer):

Gonzaga Bulldogs Depth Chart - 2013-14
                                STARTER2ND3RD4TH
                                PGMichael Yates
SGElton Briggs (72)*Arturo Akingbade (70)Timothy Bernard
                                SFSammy Sola (80)Ashton Reece
                                PFVernon Lopez (76)*Gabriel Temple (73)
                                CDoug Montgomery (81)Chester Reaves (71)

So, I really hope I can finish strong with the guys I posted in my recruiting update post, because if not, next season may be a bit rough.

                                Thanks for the comment!
