Your lineup definitely has improved quite a bit over the past 2 seasons. Looking forward to this season!

We have a VERY favorable yet very weak schedule this season. We have a team overall rating of 87 which is higher than every team on our schedule, including Washington State (85 Overall), Michigan (81 Overall), and Oregon State (84 Overall). However, I am afraid that this weak schedule could come back to hurt us when it comes to NCAA Tournament seeding.

            Week 1 Results

            November 16, 2013: Gonzaga @ Idaho

Well, it wasn't pretty, but Gonzaga did what they had to do in order to come away with the W on the road as they take this one 65-54.

With 6 newcomers who will have to play during games, Coach Carmichael played with some rotations. He liked what he saw from Montgomery and benched him for the 2nd half to keep him healthy and to get Freshman Marcus Ramelli some playing time. In just 13 minutes of playing time, Montgomery scored 9 points on 3/4 shooting from the floor and 3/3 from the free throw line. Sophomore SF Sammy Sola looks like a completely different player. Sola's confidence is at an all time high and it showed in this one. Sola led all scorers with 15 points. However, he really needs to work on that free throw shooting as he made only 6 of 12 attempts. Junior PF Vernon Lopez turned in a solid night as he scored 13 points and grabbed 4 boards.

For Idaho, PF Stefon Fearing came off the bench and led the Vandals in scoring with 11 points on 4/9 shooting. Fearing also added 6 boards to his stat line. SG Stewart Zamore was the only starter who scored 10 or more points in this game for the Vandals. Zamore scored 10 points on 3/9 shooting from the floor and was only 1/6 from the 3 point range. 3 Vandals chipped in 7 a piece in the poor shooting night.

All in all, it was an ok game for the Zags... They're starting two true freshmen, with three true freshmen coming off the bench and getting playing time. So, a bumpy start is to be expected. Hopefully, these freshmen can improve rather quickly once Gonzaga has to start playing Oregon State, Washington State, and Michigan.

              Week 2

              November 19, 2013: Gonzaga @ Liberty

This may have been the ugliest win in Coach Carmichael's college coaching career. Gonzaga escapes an unexpectedly close game against Liberty to win, 68-57.

The shooting was better in this game for Gonzaga as the young Bulldogs' shot 50% from the floor. However, that was about it when it comes to bright spots. The Zags shot a horrible 12/21 from the free throw line and turned the ball over 20 times VS. LIBERTY! Liberty has two players on their team with an overall over 70... The majority of their team has an overall in the 50's...

Doug Montgomery led Gonzaga with his team high 15 points on 5/12 shooting from the floor and 3/4 shooting from the charity stripe. He also added 5 rebounds and 3 blocks to his stat line. SF Sammy Sola finished with 14 points on 6/12 shooting (with another awful performance from the free throw line). He also had 4 blocks, 3 assists, 3 rebounds, and 1 steal. PF Vernon Lopez added 10 points of his own and Keithan Krager got the start at SG.

Libert was led by PF Andrius Eddins who scored a game high 16 points... 9 of those 16 points came from the free throw line. He also grabbed 8 rebounds. However, Eddins was the only Liberty player to score in double figures. SF Earl Hamilton got close with 9 points. 4 of Hamilton's points came from the free throw line.

Up next, Gonzaga will play their home opener against Weber State on November 28th.

Re: The Coaching Legacy of Danny Carmichael (CH 2K8)

                Week 3

                November 28, 2013: Weber State 69, Gonzaga 81

Weber State is not a very good team... However, for this young team to play as well as they did in the 2nd half, definitely is a positive going forward. This hasn't been mentioned recently, but Coach Carmichael's "mayhem" defense is definitely what won the game for the Bulldogs. Thanks to Carmichael's aggressive defense, Gonzaga forced 26 turnovers... Which is the most any Carmichael team has forced in his 7 years of coaching!

Vernon Lopez led the way for the Zags with a fantastic game. Lopez almost recorded a double double as he scored 23 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. SF Sammy Sola put up a season high 19 points on 7/11 shooting including 3/4 shooting from 3 point range. That's definitely a positive going forward since Sola is definitely more of a slashing SF. Sola also had 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. Senior PF Chester Reaves came off the bench late in the game and balled out. Reaves scored 10 points on 3/4 shooting from the floor and shot 4/6 from the free throw line in just 9 minutes of playing time. Sophomore SG Keithan Krager scored in double figures for the first time in his Gonzaga career... However he shot a miserable 1/7 from the floor, yet shot a perfect 8/8 from the free throw line.

Weber State was led by Freshman C Matt Cochran who scored a team high 13 points on 4/8 shooting from the floor and 4/5 from the free throw line. Cochran also grabbed a team high 8 rebounds. SF Arturo Bean was the only other Wildcat player to score at least 10 points. Bean put up 10 points on 2/3 shooting from the floor and 5/7 from the free throw line.

                November 30, 2013: Gonzaga 79, Hawaii 71

Gonzaga was led by Center Doug Montgomery who scored a team high 16 points on 5/10 shooting from the floor and 4/6 from the free throw line. SF Sammy Sola recorded the first double double by a Bulldog player this season as he scored 11 points and grabbed 11 boards. Freshmen PG Michael Yates and SG Timothy Bernard were HUGE off the bench tonight. They both played 7 minutes and both made significant contributions. Yates scored 9 points in his 7 minutes of playing time by shooting 2/3 from the floor and 3/4 from the free throw line. Then, Timothy Bernard scored 7 points off of 3/4 shooting from the floor and 1/1 shooting from 3 point range.

PF Nicholas Dye led the Warriors as he put up a game high 22 points on 7/17 shooting from the floor and 7/12 from the free throw line. Dye also grabbed a team high 7 rebounds and blocked 3 shots. PF Lawrence Taft scored 16 points on 6/16 shooting from the floor and 4/11 from the free throw line. Taft also had 3 blocks. The only other Warrior player to score in double figures was SG Haris McCleod who chipped in 10 points, 4 steals, 4 assists, and 3 rebounds.

Next week, Gonzaga will travel back home for their first of 4 straight home games as they take on Louisiana Tech.

                  Week 4

                  December 7, 2013: Louisiana Tech 55, Gonzaga 87

I think this young team turned a corner in the 2nd half of that tough Hawaii game. Because we came out in this game playing like a completely different team. By that, I mean we really got after it on defense... And that's how I like it.

This 'Havoc' defense forced a whopping 27 turnovers in the route tonight. For those that don't know, our 'Havoc' defense is an attacking style of defense that presses and traps all over the court. We want to force our opponents into difficult situations that result in easy steals or turnovers. And as you can tell, we definitely did a good job tonight of forcing turnovers.

We were led by Sophomore Center Doug Montgomery who had a HUGE game. Montgomery finished with 29 points on 11/17 shooting from the floor and was 6/10 from the free throw line. He put up those 29 points in just 30 minutes of playing time.

Besides Montgomery, the only other player on our team that scored in double figures was Sophomore SF Sammy Sola. Sola finished with 13 points on 5/8 shooting in just 19 minutes of playing time. He got into early foul trouble which is why he was limited to just 19 minutes.

Some other notable performances were Freshman PG Anil Howard with his 10 assists and 3 steals. However, I'd like for him to be more aggressive when it comes to scoring because he only attempted 3 shots and finished with 1 point as he was 1/2 from the free throw line. Backup Freshman PG Michael Yates was incredibly productive off the bench. In just 11 minutes of playing time, the 5'10" Freshman scored 6 points, grabbed 6 rebounds, and dished out 5 assists.

However, as a team we HAVE to do better when it comes to not turning the ball over ourselves. We turned the ball over 24 times which is simply unacceptable. But, that shows you how well we played that we were able to turn the ball over that many times and still win by 32 points.

For Louisiana Tech, they only had two players score in double figures. Those players were Senior SF Linton Castillo with 14 points and Senior C Richie Thomasson with 13 points.

As a team, Louisiana Tech shot just 32% from the floor, which just proves how good our defense was. Very rarely were they able to get an open shot.

With this victory, Coach Carmichael now has 150 career wins as an NCAA Head Coach.

Next week we've got two games as we inch closer to our next Tournament, the Hawaiian Island Classic.

                    Week 5

                    December 11, 2013: UC Santa Barbara 40, Gonzaga 92

This was easily the most dominating performance by any of my teams since I started coaching at Radford. We dominated on the offensive end in the 1st half and then completely dominated on both ends of the court in the 2nd half as we held them to just 12 points.

We were led in this game by Sophomore C Doug Montgomery who seems to have finally started living up to to his #1 C ranking that he had coming out of High School. Montgomery finished with 24 points (9/14 from the floor) and 8 rebounds in just 21 minutes of playing time.

Sophomore SF Sammy Sola scored 16 points on a very efficient 4/6 shooting from the floor and he went 7/11 from the Free Throw line. Due to PF Vernon Lopez's foul trouble for the 2nd straight game, we got Freshman C Marcus Ramelli some quality minutes... And he produced in a big way. Ramelli finished with 14 points and 3 rebounds in 21 minutes of the bench. Then, one game after I said I wanted Freshman PG Anil Howard to be more aggressive when it comes to scoring, he does just that. Howard finished with 12 points (3-8 shooting from the floor, 5-7 from the free throw line), 6 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block. A very solid game from our young PG. Hopefully he can build off this strong outing and continue to improve.

We did a better job at holding onto the ball tonight as we "only" had 16 turnovers compared to our 24 in our previous game. We also shot better from 3 point range. Moving forward, our 3 point shooting must continue to improve if we want to make a serious run in the Tournament in March.

For the first time in my NCAA coaching tenure, no player from the opposing team scored in double figures. The high point total for UC Santa Barbara came from their 6th man, SG SG Brennon Iti and backup PF Dipo Washington who both scored just 7 points.

                    December 13, 2013: Boise State 70, Gonzaga 80

Thanks to a late run, we managed to knock off a talented Boise State team at home. Once again, we were led by Sophomore C Doug Montgomery who is quickly becoming a star. Montgomery finished with 23 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 blocks in just 26 minutes of playing time. Montgomery was 8/20 shooting from the floor and finished a solid 6/8 from the free throw line.

Junior PF Vernon Lopez finally managed to stay out of foul trouble and was honestly the difference maker in this one. Lopez finished with 16 points on 4/6 shooting from the floor. Lopez was a perfect 8/8 from the charity stripe which was huge for us. He also finished with 4 rebounds and 2 blocks. Freshman SF Ashton Reece came off the bench and gave us some quality production as he filled in for Sophomore SF Sammy Sola who found himself in foul trouble early in this game. Reece finished with 12 points (3/7 shooting from the floor and was 5/5 from the free throw line) and 4 rebounds.

We shot the ball horribly in this game as we finished with a season low in field goal percentage. However, we made 36 free throws in this game which is the most we've made all season. So, I'm not sure how we can knock down free throws so efficiently, yet we can't buy an actual bucket to save our lives. Once again, our defense won the game for us as we forced 20 turnovers and blocked 6 shots to Boise State's 1 blocked shot on us.

Boise State was carried by massive 7'2", 272 lbs. Center, Alec Hipsher. Hipsher was a force down low for the Broncos as he finished with a team high 20 points on 8/19 shooting from the floor. Hipsher was the only Bronco to score in double figures. But, 11 of Boise State's 12 players that had playing time scored at least 2 points. So, it was a balanced attack for the Broncos, but it wasn't enough as we pulled away in the 2nd half.

Following this game, we got the news that we're now nationally ranked! For the first time in my NCAA coaching tenure, I'm the coach of a team that's nationally ranked. In the updated polls, we're ranked #23 in the country and we've moved up to #1 on the Mid-Major Polls which is also a career first for me.

Big things are ahead as I believe we haven't even scratched the surface on what we can accomplish here at Gonzaga.

                      Week 6 Results: Part 1

                      December 16, 2013: Sacramento State 68, Gonzaga 85

We sure ended our 4 game home stand off in a great way as we dominated against Sacramento State.

We were led by Junior PF Vernon Lopez who had a phenomenal game. He didn't lead our team in scoring, but he led in just about every other category. Lopez finished with 17 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocks. Lopez's totals in rebounds, steals, and blocks were team highs.

Sophomore SF Sammy Sola finished with a game high 22 points on 8/18 shooting including 3/5 from 3 point range. He also went 3/4 from the free throw line. Sola also finished with 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 1 steal.

Sophomore SG Keithan Krager didn't score a lot, but he didn't miss a shot. Krager finished with 10 points on 3/3 shooting from the floor, including 2/2 from 3 point range. He also made both free throw attempts while dishing out 6 assists.

Sacramento State was led by a pair of Senior center's in Brandon Klatsky and Fernandez Israel. Klatsky finished with a team high 18 points but also missed a whopping 18 shots. Israel was the team's 6th man and he finished with 17 points in just 21 minutes while also grabbing 6 boards. The only other Hornet player to score in double figures was SG Torrin Borders, who played PG in this game. Borders finished with 11 points on 3/4 shooting from the floor and 3/4 from the free throw line.

Overall, it was a great game as we dominated on the defensive end of the court. We were on fire from 3 point range and nearly shot 50% from the floor as a team. The one thing we have to get better at is not turning the ball over on offense. Thankfully our defense forces turnovers because if it didn't, we'd be in trouble when we have 23 turnovers in a game.

We'll play UCF in the opening round of the Hawaiian Island Classic. We'll have to hold onto the ball better because the competition is much tougher than what we've been playing against recently. If we beat UCF, we'll most likely face Arkansas in the 2nd Round. If we win our 2nd Round game, we'll most likely play powerhouse Villanova in the Tournament Championship Game.

Hawaiian Island Classic: Round 1 Results

                          December 18, 2013: UCF 67, #23 Gonzaga 88

Thanks to a huge first half, where we put up a season high 53 points, we coasted to an easy win in the first round of the Hawaiian Island Classic.

We were led in this game by Sophomore SF Sammy Sola who had a tremendous game. Sola finished with a game high 21 points on 7/12 shooting including 3/5 from 3 point range. He was 4/6 from the charity stripe and added 4 rebounds and 2 steals to his stat line. It was an extremely efficient game from one of our most consistent offensive weapons this season.

Sophomore C Doug Montgomery got back on track after a lackluster game against Sacramento State. Montgomery finished with 15 points on 4/6 shooting from the floor and 6/7 from the free throw line. He also had 4 steals and 2 rebounds in this game.

Sophomore SG Keithan Krager followed up his efficient offensive game vs. Sacramento State with another efficient game. Krager finished with 11 points on 3/5 shooting from the floor and 4/4 from the free throw line. Krager also added 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal to his stat line.

UCF was led by Senior Jermery Parsons who had a massive game against us. Parsons finished with 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. He was a dominating force all game long as he used his strength to have his way regardless of who we put up against him. The one thing that really helped us was his garbage free throw shooting. Parsons went 6/15 from the free throw line.

Junior SG Derrick Ali added a season high 15 points on 5/10 shooting from the floor and 3/5 from the free throw line. Then 6th man, Senior SF Adama Burleson, was the only other UCF player who finished with over 10 points as Burleson scored exactly 10 points.

I was encouraged by our ball security in this game. We went from 23 turnovers against Sacramento State down to 14 in this game. We also shot the ball extremely well as we shot 51% from the floor. All around, it was a great game and I'm excited to see us build on this performance and hopefully win this tournament.

Up next, we'll play Arkansas as they defeated Jacksonville 90-73. In the top part of the bracket, Villanova defeated Ball State 66-55 and Fresno State defeated North Texas 77-65. So if we beat Arkansas on Friday, then we'll play either Villanova or Fresno State in the Tournament Championship Game.

Hawaiian Island Classic: Round 2 Results

                            December 20, 2013: Arkansas 69, #23 Gonzaga 92

I was confident we'd win this game vs. Arkansas... But I was not expecting this. From the opening tip to the final buzzer, this team played with an energy I have not seen before. If we could play like this more consistently, we'd be one of, if not the best team in the country.

Once again, Sophomore SF Sammy Sola led the way for our team as he continues his great offensive play. Sola finished with a team high 19 points on 7/14 shooting from the floor. He also finished with 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal.

Sophomore C Doug Montgomery had an extremely efficient offensive performance. He finished with 16 points on 6/8 shooting from the floor, including 3/4 from 3 point range. Who knew the big fella could shoot the 3 like that??

Sophomore SG Keithan Krager is quickly turning into one of our go to scorers when we need a bucket. Krager's play has been remarkable recently. He finished with 15 points on 3/5 shooting from the floor including 3/4 from 3 point range. He was a perfect 6/6 from the free throw line while grabbing 7 boards and dishing out 4 assists. He definitely earned the increase in minutes that we gave him today.

For the Razorbacks, Junior PF C.W. Shelton led the way with 14 points on 5/11 shooting in just 18 minutes. However, late in this game, Shelton fouled out. The only other Arkansas player with more than 10 points was Freshman SF Howie Powe who finished with 13 points on 3/4 shooting. He was a perfect 2/2 from 3 point range and was 5/8 from the free throw line.

For the second straight game, our opponents' free throw percentage has been horrible and our field goal percentage has topped 50%. That's a blessing for us and hopefully it can continue in the Championship Game tomorrow when we take on a very tough Villanova squad. Villanova's record currently sits at 7-1 with their win yesterday over Fresno State.

This is a notable win for me, because for the first time in my college coaching career, my team has started off with a perfect 10-0 record... Even my 30+ win teams at Radford couldn't do that. You never know... Maybe this team can get to a 20-0 record? We're the best team in the WCC and if we can knock off Villanova, Michigan, and Washington State, 20-0 may not be too far fetched!

                              Hawaiian Island Classic Championship Results

                              December 21, 2013: #23 Gonzaga 77, Villanova 65

We finished off the Hawaiian Island Classic in a great way as we knocked off Villanova in the Championship game in a 77-65 victory.

We really pulled away towards the end of the 1st half as we took a 43-30 lead heading into halftime. Things stayed just about even throughout the 2nd half as we mostly traded buckets.

We were led in this game by both C Doug Montgomery and PF Vernon Lopez. Each had 14 points to lead our team. Montgomery had 14 points on 7/15 shooting while Lopez had 14 points on a much more efficient 5/7 shooting. They both grabbed 5 rebounds too.

We knew we would need a bench player to step up and knock down some big shots when he got the opportunity. That player for us in this game was Freshman SG Timothy Bernard. Bernard was a 3* recruit in our last class and he was rated as the #122 player in the country. Bernard played 14 minutes and scored 9 points. He shot a perfect 3/3 from the floor and went 3/4 from the charity stripe.

Senior role players SG Elton Briggs and PF Chester Reaves also played exceptionally well off the bench. Briggs finished with 7 points on 2/2 shooting from the floor, 1/1 from 3 point range, and 2/2 from the free throw line. Along with the 7 points, Briggs grabbed 5 boards. Reaves on the other hand had 8 points and grabbed 7 boards in just 16 minutes of playing time.

Villanova was led by Sophomore PG Velmar Goodrich. Goodrich finished with a game high 16 points on 6/12 shooting from the floor and went 2/2 from the free throw line. He also grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 2 assists.

Senior PF Louie Allen was the only other Wildcat to score in double figures. Allen stuffed the stat sheet as he finished with 13 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal. He did a great job at forcing our guys to foul him as 7 of his 13 points came from the free throw line.

It was a great performance by our guys in Hawaii. During the 3 games in the tournament, we averaged 85.7 points per game while we gave up an average of 67 points per game. For a team whose core is mostly Freshmen and Sophomores, that differential is pretty impressive.

We get 5 days off and then we'll travel to Ann Arbor, MI to take on the Michigan Wolverines.

                                December 26, 2013: #21 Gonzaga 77, Michigan 67

Gonzaga moves to a perfect 12-0 on the season thanks to an incredible defensive performance that led them to a 77-67 win over Michigan. The Bulldogs forced Michigan to shoot just 27% from the floor and 22% from 3 point range. The only way the Wolverines managed to keep the game was close was due to their excellent free throw shooting. Michigan went 29-33 (88%) from the charity stripe.

Gonzaga was led by Sophomore C, Doug Montgomery who scored 14 points in just 21 minutes of playing time. Freshman SF Ashton Reece was perfect shooting the ball in his 18 minutes of playing time off the bench. Reece shot 3-3 (2-2 from 3 point range) and 4-4 from the free throw line giving him 12 points on the night. Then, a pair of Gonzaga starters, Sammy Sola and Vernon Lopez, scored 11 points. But, both were extremely inefficient shooting the ball. Sola was 4-14 from the floor and Lopez was 3-9 from the floor. However, Sola stuffed the stat sheet as he finished with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, and 2 blocks.

Michigan was led by Senior SF Jaycen Opacic who finished with a game high 25 points on 6-18 shooting and 4-11 shooting from 3 point range. However, he was a perfect 9-9 from the charity stripe. The only other Wolverine to score in double figures was Sophomore PF Nouha Sanderson. Sanderson finished with 13 points on 2-4 shooting from the floor. But, he was 9-10 from the free throw line. He also added 6 boards to his stat line.

                                -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                                December 29, 2013: #21 Gonzaga 81, Washington State 66

The Zags pushed their winning streak to 13 thanks to yet another incredible defensive effort in their 81-66 win. Gonzaga held Washington State to just 38% shooting from the floor and 21% from 3 point range. The real killer for the Cougars in this game was their awful 63% shooting from the free throw line.

Leading the way for Gonzaga was Freshman PG Anil Howard who led the team with 16 points. Howard shot 4-7 from the floor and 3-4 from 3 point range. He also added 3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals to his stat line. Sophomore SF Sammy Sola was just 1 rebound short of a double double. He finished with 13 points on 5-10 shooting, much more efficient that the Michigan game, and 9 boards. He also added 4 assists, 2 steals, and 1 block to his stat line. Sophomore Walk-On PF Gabriel Temple scored a ton of points in a hurry during garbage time. Temple finished with 10 points (perfect 3-3 from the floor, 4-5 from the free throw line) in just 9 minutes of playing time.

Washington State had just one player finish with over 9 points. That player was Junior PG Jerald Cisse. Cisse finished with 18 points on 7-14 shooting. He also finished with 3 rebounds and 4 assists. The rest of the Washington State starting lineup combined for 22 points on 7-29 shooting from the floor.

All around it was a great week from the undefeated Bulldogs. One thing we'll need to improve on is our Free Throw shooting. The Michigan game taught us that if you shoot well from the line, then you can stay in games. Thankfully our defense was sensational because shooting 62% and 69% from the Free Throw Line in consecutive games is not good at all.

We have just two games left before we start WCC play. The first will be against Charleston Southern at home and the final game will be a tough one on the road at Oregon State.
