Re: The Coaching Legacy of Danny Carmichael (CH 2K8)

November 12, 2011: Gonzaga vs. Fresno State

Gonzaga's stellar half propels them to the big win over Fresno State. This marks the first win in the Danny Carmichael era at Gonzaga.

Gonzaga was carried by Senior SG Chester French who had a MONSTER game. French scored basically half of Gonzaga's points as he scored 40 on 13/25 shooting, 8/15 from behind the 3 point arc, and 6/7 from the free throw line. He also played Point Guard at times because starting PG Wade Spaulding was in foul trouble almost the entire game. Sophomore C Chester Reaves had another solid performance, turning in 7 points and 8 rebounds. Backup Senior PG Jaycee Cleland played good in relief for Spaulding as he scored 8 points and dished out 5 assists. However, he really needs to do better shooting 3 pointers as he missed all 5 attempts.

Fresno State was led by Senior PG Ahmad Farrell who scored a team high 14 points in 31 minutes. However, Farrell shot just 4/18 from the field, 3/11 from 3 point range, and 3/6 from the free throw line. Backup Senior PG Dani Munir scored 12 points on 4/5 shooting and 3/4 from 3 point range. Junior PF Kevan Bellairs had a stellar performance off the bench as he scored 11 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 24 minutes of playing time. Gonzaga's pressure defense really disrupted Fresno State's offense as turnovers killed Fresno State's chances. Fresno State turned the ball over 20 times in this game.

November 14, 2011: Gonzaga vs. Wyoming

In a game that was truly a tale of two halves, Gonzaga hangs on for the win which marks Danny Carmichael's 100th win as a Collegiate Head Coach.

Gonzaga was led by Senior SG Chester French, who continues to play absolutely incredible basketball, by scoring 22 points, grabbing 9 rebounds, and dishing out 2 steals. Not to mention his 2 steals and 1 block. The only other Bulldog player who scored in double figures was Junior SF Emmett Daniel who put up 10 points on 4/7 shooting. Daniel also had 5 rebounds and 2 blocks in a solid all around effort. Junior SG Deng Ba played solid basketball off the bench as he finished with a stat line of 9 points ,5 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assists. But, as the season progresses, Gonzaga must get better with the unnecessary fouls and poor free throw shooting.

Wyoming was led by Senior PG Haim Coombs who had an outstanding offensive game by scoring 22 points on 7/9 shooting from the floor, 5/6 from 3 point range, and 3/5 from the free throw line. Coombs also had 6 rebounds and 3 assists... But, he was the main reason Wyoming was down by 23 at halftime because he got into foul trouble early and sat out most of the 1st half. Sophomore SF Rexson Defares had 13 points on 5/10 shooting, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals. Junior SG Nathaniel Hill struggled offensively as he scored 10 points on just 3/13 shooting and 1/5 from 3 point range.

Re: The Coaching Legacy of Danny Carmichael (CH 2K8)

        November 20, 2011: Northern Arizona @ Gonzaga

The Gonzaga Bulldogs continue their solid start to the season, led by Senior SG Chester French. French scored a game high 24 points on 8/20 shooting and was 7/10 from the free throw line. One stat that is rather concerning is the fact that he only shot 1/6 from 3 point range, which is not good by any stretch of the imagination considering who the Bulldogs were playing. Thankfully, French had a solid game shooting the ball, because the rest of the Gonzaga starters weren't very good at all. The other 4 starters combined to score just 19 of the Bulldogs' 76 points. Junior SG Deng Ba continues to play very well off the bench as he scored a season high 12 points on 4/8 shooting in 19 minutes of playing time. However, the Bulldogs got a MUCH needed boost from a surprising bench player, SF Roland Demond. In just 9 minutes of playing time, Demond was all over the place and was 2 rebounds short of a double double. Demond finished with 12 points on 4/5 shooting and 2/3 from 3 point range and added 8 rebounds.

Northern Arizona was led by Senior C Bert Hornsby who scored a team high 19 points on 7/18 shooting and grabbed a team high 7 boards. Just like Gonzaga, the other 4 starters didn't play very well at all as they combined for just 16 points. However, the Lumberjacks got a couple big performances from bench players. Senior SG Myron Reynolds scored 11 points on 3/7 shooting in his 24 minutes of playing time off the bench, while Freshman PG Owen Nava scored 10 points on 3/8 shooting in 14 minutes of playing time off the bench. The Lumberjacks are off to a slow start, but they have the most talented team in the Big Sky Conference. So, don't be surprised if this is a team that gets into the NCAA Tournament in March.

Re: The Coaching Legacy of Danny Carmichael (CH 2K8)

          November 24, 2011: EWU @ Gonzaga

Gonzaga took on instate rival Eastern Washington (0-8) and absolutely destroyed the visiting Eagles by a score of 85-48.

Chester French once again showed why he is one of the most prolific scorers in not only the WCC, but the entire country. French finished with 28 points on 9/23 shooting and went 7/10 from the free throw line. However, the 3 point shooting continues to be a burden for French as he shot a horrible 3/14 from 3 point range. The bulldogs had a trio of players that all scored 11 points. Freshman PF Vernon Lopez had his best game in a Gonzaga uniform as he scored 11 points on 5/9 shooting, grabbed 7 rebounds, and blocked 5 shots. Sophomore C Chester Reaves also had a solid game as he scored 11 points on 4/8 shooting and grabbed 7 boards. Then, Senior PG Jaycee Cleland came off the bench and just absolutely lit it up shooting the ball. Cleland was 3/3 shooting and all three shots were from 3 point range. He also made his two free throw attempts to finish with a season high 11 points in 17 minutes of playing time. Junior PG Wade Spaulding had an all around fantastic night with 10 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, and 3 steals.

However, shooting the ball is still an issue for Spaulding too. If Gonzaga wants to be able to compete with Loyola Marymount, Pepperdine, Saint Mary's, and Santa Clara in the WCC, Chester French and Wade Spaulding have GOT to start shooting the ball better. Thankfully, we still have the entire month of December to go before conference play.

Re: The Coaching Legacy of Danny Carmichael (CH 2K8)

            November 26, 2011: Gonzaga @ Boise State

Gonzaga's 2nd half woes continue as they blow a 13 point halftime lead and lose to Boise State (6-2) by a final score of 76-75.

Gonzaga was of course led by Senior SG Chester French, who was held below 20 points for the first time this year. Even more of responsibility was put on him in this game as starting PG Wade Spaulding went out with an injury, just 9 minutes into the game. The severity of Spaulding's injury wasn't known at the time, but he did not return. However, French score 16 points on 6/19 shooting. He also grabbed 8 rebounds and dished out 6 assists. Playing at the SG position when French was running the point was Junior SG Deng Ba, who bounced back in a big way in this game. Ba scored 15 points in just 12 minutes of playing time on 5/8 shooting, including 4/5 from 3 point range.

Boise State was led by Redshirt Junior PF Cordell Darden... For those of you who have followed this legacy from the beginning, you may remember Cordell Darden. In my first recruiting class at Radford, Cordell Darden was my starting PF in year 2, then was one of the first guys off the bench because I recruited an even better PF for year 3. Because of the lack of playing time, Darden transferred... And I totally forgot he transferred to Boise State. And boy, did that sure come back to haunt me. Darden played a fantastic offensive game with a game high 17 points on 7/14 shooting and a perfect 2/2 from 3 point range. Senior SG Marty Hartman was very efficient on the offensive end as well as he scored 15 points off of 6/11 shooting in 34 minutes of playing time. Sophomore SF Gregg Doornekamp was the final Bronco player with double digits in the scoring column as he put up 13 points on 2/3 shooting and was 9/12 from the free throw line.

              December 3, 2011: Idaho @ Gonzaga

The Bulldogs held a 1 point lead at halftime, but after a very strong 2nd half finish, Gonzaga would go on to defeat Idaho (3-3) 85-66.

Here's a new one for you, Gonzaga was not led in points tonight by Chester French. Junior PG Wade Spaulding was the Bulldogs' leading scorer with 20 points on 6/11 shooting, which included 5/6 shooting from 3 point range. Not only did Spaulding put up big numbers in the points column, but he did it all tonight. Spaulding also finished with 6 assists, 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and had 1 block. Senior SG Chester French was held under 20 points for the second straight game as he finished with 16 on 6/13 shooting. Freshman PF Vernon Lopez had an absolutely horrible night shooting the ball as he made only 1 shot of his 8 attempts. But, he ended up with 13 points as he made 11 of 14 free throw attempts. He also came down with 8 rebounds. Also, I previously forgot to mention this, but Walk-On Center Jacoby Wilkes is done for the season after he tore his ACL vs. Boise State.

The Vandals were led by Junior PF DeMario Simpson who finished with a team high 19 points on a very efficient 7/11 shooting the ball. Simpson also grabbed 5 rebounds. Sophomore PG Stewart Zamore had a very good performance tonight as he scored 13 points on 4/8 shooting and 5/6 from the free throw line. He also dished out 7 assists. Then, coming off the bench was Freshman PF Stefon Fearing who scored 10 points on 3/6 shooting and was 4/5 from the free throw line. Besides these 3 players, only 1 other Idaho player scored 6 points or more.

                Recruiting Update: Early Signing Period

Coach Carmichael was tabbed as one of the best recruiters in the country as he brought in some truly unbelievable recruiting classes at Radford. Well, Carmichael has continued that incredible recruiting here at Gonzaga.

As the Early Signing Period passed, just before the deadline the Bulldogs' got their first commitment of the 2012 Recruiting Class... And this kid is a program changer.

The commitment is from 4* Center Douglas Montgomery who hails from Anaheim, CA. Oh and Montgomery just happens to be the #1 Center in the country. He is a bit undersized at 6'8", 220 lbs. but there is some hope that he'll continue to grow once he gets to Gonzaga. Somehow, Coach Carmichael and the Bulldogs' staff were able to hold off the likes of Stanford, USC, Cal, and Washington for Montgomery's commitment.

This is a monumental pickup for the Bulldogs as they have filled 1 of their 2 available spots for the 2012 Recruiting Class.

                  December 7, 2011: UC Riverside @ Gonzaga

Down 31-25 at halftime Gonzaga had to make adjustments... And they did just that. Another strong 2nd half performance gives Gonzaga their 6th win on the year as they defeat UC Riverside by a final score of 64-59. This win for Gonzaga also snaps UC Riverside's 5 game winning streak.

Gonzaga was carried by their best two players tonight. Senior SG Chester French came up extremely clutch in the 2nd half with some late free throws to stifle a UC Riverside run. French scored a game high 28 points on 9/25 shooting, and was 6/8 from the free throw line. An amazing stat is that French took 25 of the Gonzaga team total of 59 shot attempts. So, French ended up shooting 42% of Gonzaga's shots as a team. Junior PG Wade Spaulding turned in another great performance as he scored 14 points, grabbed 6 rebounds (pretty impressive for a 5'7" point guard), dished out 4 assists, and recorded 4 steals. With French and Spaulding, Gonzaga has on of the top backcourts in the country.

However, the front court needs some serious work. Gonzaga Center Chester French once again got man handled in the paint as UC Riverside's top performer, Senior C Wes McCollum, scored a team high 22 points on 9/14 shooting and grabbed 8 rebounds. McCollum shot better from 3 point range (2/3) then he did at the free throw line (2/6). The only other Highlander player in double figures was Senior PG Julien Goodman who had an all around solid game on the offensive end. Goodman finished the game with 11 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 1 steal.

Thankfully, the Highlanders shot a miserable 10/21 from the free throw line (47.6%) and turned the ball over 18 times or else this game would have had a totally different outcome.

                    December 12, 2011: Montana State @ Gonzaga

Gonzaga got probably their easiest win all season as they steamroll Montana State, 89-49.

Senior SG Chester French dominated this game as he scored 28 points on 11/23 shooting in just 29 minutes of playing time. And once again, Junior PG Wade Spaulding turns in another outstanding all around performance, as he finished the game with a double double. Spaulding's final stat line was: 13 points, 10 assists, 6 rebounds, and 4 steals in 35 minutes of playing time. Then, coming off the bench was streaky scorer, SG Deng Ba, who turned in another fantastic shooting performance. Ba finished with 15 points on 4/5 shooting, 3/4 shooting from 3 point range, and was 4/6 from the free throw line. He also added 4 rebounds and 4 assists in just 17 minutes of playing time.

Montana State was led by two players. SG Hodario Nicholson score 13 points on 3/9 shooting and went 6/9 from the free throw line. He also grabbed 6 rebounds. PF Kirk Bonner had a solid game as he finished with 13 points on 5/12 shooting and 7 rebounds. However, turnovers doomed the Bobcats as they committed 24 turnovers. Not to help matters anymore, but they shot 31% from the floor (14/45) and just 12% from 3 point range (2/17).

Up next for Gonzaga, they will play #14 Oregon (8-1) at home and that will be a big test for the Bulldogs. Gonzaga hasn't played a team from a Power 5 school all year, but Oregon hasn't played a game since November 27th. So, the Ducks will definitely come into the game well rested and prepared for a fight.

                      December 14, 2011: #14 Oregon @ Gonzaga

#14 Oregon holds on late to defeat Gonzaga in a nail biter, 81-79.

Gonzaga was led by Senior SG Chester French who scored a team high 24 points on 8/25 shooting, 4/14 from 3 point range, and 4/5 from the free throw line. He also added 5 rebounds and 3 assists in the game. Junior PG Wade Spaulding had another all around great game. He finished with 15 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, and 4 steals. However, a big part of the loss were Spaulding's 7 turnovers. Junior SF Emmett Daniel had his best game this year as he shot a perfect 4/4 from the floor and 2/2 from 3 point range to finish with 10 points in just 11 minutes of playing time. Freshman PF Vernon Lopez also flashed some big time ability vs. stiff competition as he finished with 9 points and 9 rebounds vs. a top 25 opponent. So, that's definitely a confidence builder for the True Freshman.

Oregon was led by Senior SG Latece Roller who had an outstanding performance. He finished with a game high 28 points on 10/20 shooting and 6/14 from 3 point range. He also added 6 assists and 4 rebounds in a great all around effort. Junior C Frashon Haigler finished with an impressive double double for the Ducks as he was a force all night in the paint. Haigler finished with 12 points on 4/8 shooting, 4/5 from the free throw line, and grabbed 14 rebounds in 33 minutes of playing time. Then, coming off the bench with a solid performance was Junior SG Arnold McLaren who finished with 14 points on 4/12 shooting from the field and 4/6 from the free throw line in 24 minutes of playing time.

Gonzaga will travel to Indiana and play at Purdue (3-4), which will be the Bulldogs' first road game since they played Boise State on November 26th.

                        December 17, 2011: Gonzaga @ Purdue

Gonzaga didn't fair very well in their first real tough road game of the season as they fall to the Purdue Boilermakers, 85-68.

Chester French, the Zags leading scorer and go to offensive weapon, was completely shut down. French scored a season low 8 points on 3/10 shooting and was in foul trouble most of the game. On that note, most of the Bulldogs' starters were in foul trouble and played very cautiously on defense, and that really hurt Gonzaga's chances. Purdue shot a staggering 39 attempts from the foul line, but they only hit on 25 of those attempts. Also, what really made it nearly impossible for Gonzaga to win was the ridiculous amount of turnovers committed. Gonzaga turned the ball over 20 times compared to Purdue only turning the ball over 9 times.

Purdue on the other hand was led by C Mark Fletcher who scored a game high 23 points on 9/15 shooting. However, he shot just 50% from the free throw line going 4/8. Gonzaga's Center, Chester Reaves, had a solid game offensively, but he has to get better on the defensive side of the ball for Gonzaga to make some noise in the WCC. Purdue PF Lowell Blankenship finished with a double double, but struggled mightily shooting the ball. Blanekinship scored 18 points on 5/19 shooting, and was 7/12 from the free throw line. He also grabbed 10 boards. Then, Sophomore PF E.J. Bishop came off the bench and played an outstanding game. Bishop's final stat line was: 10 points (4/6 shooting), 5 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 blocks in 21 minutes of playing time.

With this loss, Gonzaga falls to 7-4 on the season, as Purdue gets back up to .500% as they now hold a record of 4-4.

Up next, Gonzaga will play New Orleans (3-7) in the first game of the Cable Car Classic.

December 23, 2011: Gonzaga vs. New Orleans

As expected, Gonzaga rolls in the first game of the Cable Car Classic as they defeat the New Orleans Privateers by a score of 80-61.

At halftime, the game was very close as the Zags only held a 4 point advantage, but they came alive in the 2nd half and put this game away early. Gonzaga was led by Senior SG Chester French, who returned to his usual form as he finished with a game high 26 points on 6/18 shooting and 11/15 from the free throw line. Not only did French score a lot of points, he was also the top facilitator in the game as well. French finished with 6 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals in a very well rounded performance. Junior PG Wade Spaulding just continues to do it all for Gonzaga. Spaulding finished with another crazy stat line of: 10 points (3/12 shooting), 6 steals, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. That may look like an alright game for your normal Point Guard, but again, Spaulding is only 5'7". So, grabbing 4 or more rebounds just about every game is pretty remarkable in my book. Then, Freshman PF Vernon Lopez played a very efficient game for the Zags. He finished with 10 points on 4/5 shooting and 2/3 from the free throw line and also blocked 2 shots.

The Privateers were led by Junior Sixth Man, Edwin Kilgore, who came off the bench and played very well. He scored 14 points on 5/6 shooting from the field and went 3/3 from 3 point range. He also had 3 steals, 2 assists, and 2 rebounds in 22 minutes of playing time. Redshirt Junior C Israel Petrauskas had a solid offensive outing as he finished with 12 points on 5/11 shooting from the field and 2/2 shooting from 3 point range. Then, out of nowhere came Sophomore PG Bobby Nance who played very well, despite being the 10th man off the bench for New Orleans. Nance finished with 11 points on 4/7 shooting from the field and 2/3 from 3 point range. He also dished out 4 assists in 20 minutes of playing time.

Also, just a stat I found rather interesting. New Orleans PF Lawrence Byfield shot 0/7 from the floor but finished with 7 points due to making 7/10 free throws.

Gonzaga will be up against Siena in the Cable Car Classic Championship Game as Siena (6-4) defeated Howard (5-8) by a score of 80-72.

December 24, 2011: Siena vs. Gonzaga

Gonzaga holds off a late Siena run to win the Cable Car Classic Championship by a final score of 83-72.

Gonzaga was led by SG Chester French who finished with a game high 21 points on 6/16 shooting and was a perfect 5/5 from the free throw line. PG Wade Spaulding turned in another solid all around performance as he finished with 13 points on 2/4 shooting, 2/3 from 3 point range, and 7/8 from the free throw line. And he also grabbed 4 rebounds, dished out 3 assists, and got 2 steals. C Chester French had arguably his best game as a Bulldog as he finished with 11 points on 5/8 shooting, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals. Hopefully he can turn in performances like these more often as we get closer and closer to conference play.

Siena was led by PF Freiedrich Delfico who finished with a double double by scoring 16 points (4/7 shooting, 2/2 from 3 point range, and 6/6 from the free throw line) and grabbing 10 boards. However, Delfico was a turnover machine tonight as he committed 7 turnovers by himself. Freshman PG Odie Garza turned in a solid offensive game, as he finished with 10 points on 2/4 shooting, 1/2 from 3 point range, and 5/6 from the free throw line. And finally, Senior C Moses Aladi was the final Siena player with double digits in the points column as he also finished with 10 points in just 16 minutes of playing time.

December 29, 2011: Radford vs. Gonzaga

What a game! Both Radford and Gonzaga traded blows back and forth throughout the entire game and it took overtime to determine a winner. After outscoring Radford in Overtime, Gonzaga would come away with the nail biting victory vs. Coach Danny Carmichael's former team by a score of 93-88.

Chester French led the way for the Zags as he scored a game high 22 points on 7/20 shooting and 6/7 from the free throw line. Thankfully, Gonzaga gets about a week off because French played 44 minutes in this game, which is by FAR the most a Gonzaga player has played in a single game this season. PG Wade Spaulding had another solid game as he scored 15 points on 5/13 from the floor and 4/4 from the free throw line. He also added 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals to his stat line. However, Spaulding committed 7 turnovers in this game. Both starting Gonzaga front court players finished with 9 points and 12 rebounds.

Turnovers just about killed the Zags' hopes of winning this game as they committed 7 more than Radford. But, the major reason why Gonzaga was able to pull this game off is because Radford shot a miserable 9/22 from the free throw line (which is 41%).

Radford was led by Junior PF Brandon Ray who came off the bench and scored 20 points on 8/20 shooting from the floor in 33 minutes of playing time. Sophomore PF Melvin Reeves turned in a very solid performance as he finished with 14 points on 7/12 shooting and 7 boards. But, Reeves was 0/4 from the free throw line which really hurt Radford. Then, Junior C Marquis Petersen finished with 12 points. One performance that surprised me was Redshirt Freshman SG Freddy Hacker. He was the highest rated player I ever got at Radford, yet came in and was only 70 overall. Well, he came off the bench and in 16 minutes put up 9 points on 4/8 shooting and grabbed 6 boards.

                              **Side Note**

I was rather surprised that we won, because as you can tell by the ratings next to the players in the box score, basically, anyone on Radford's bench could be the 7th man coming off the bench for us this season. They're also rated 85 overall and Gonzaga is only 82 overall.
