      NCAA Tournament: Final 4 Results

      April 5, 2014

If you like games with a lot of offense, you would have loved this one. At halftime, Gonzaga led 49-45 after leading for most of the 1st half.

Michigan State went on a quick 7-0 run to start the 2nd half to take control of all momentum... But the young Bulldogs' didn't give up led behind the Sophomore trio of Doug Montgomery, Sammy Sola, and Keithan Krager.

After trailing ever since that 7-0 Spartan run, Gonzaga reclaimed the lead on a Doug Montgomery 3 with 5:22 left in the 2nd half. Gonzaga's bench went nuts, the fans went nuts, and Tom Izzo immediately called a timeout.

Gonzaga had the momentum. And they wouldn't relinquish it.

They only played better to end the half as they stunned the more experience, and honestly, the more talented Michigan State Spartans by a score of 104-97. Gonzaga was going to their first National Championship Game in program history.

Doug Montgomery led the scoring for the Bulldogs as he finished with 20 points in just 16 minutes of playing time. Montgomery shot 6-7 from the floor, 3-3 from 3 point range, and 5-5 from the charity stripe. It was exactly the type of game Gonzaga needed from the budding superstar.

Sophomore SF Sammy Sola just keeps continuing to play lights out. Sola finished with 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. He shot 7-10 from the floor, a perfect 2-2 from 3 point range, and a perfect 3-3 from the free throw line.

Sophomore SG Keithan Krager came up huge in his 33 minutes of playing time... Which is the most minutes he's received in one game all season. Krager scored 15 points and dished out 5 assists.

The surprise performance of the game came from Freshman C Marcus Ramelli. When I say this kid came up clutch, that might be an understatement. In the biggest game of his life, Ramelli was forced into playing time during important moments of the game due to Vernon Lopez and Doug Montgomery's foul trouble. The Freshman responded with 13 points on 5-7 shooting from the floor, 1-2 from 3 point range, and 2-3 from the free throw line in 20 minutes. Incredible effort from Ramelli.

Michigan State was led by absolute star, Sophomore SF Konrad Tigert. Tigert finished with a game high 23 points and 7 rebounds. Tigert shot 8-13 from the floor, 3-5 from 3 point range, and 4-7 from the free throw line.

Budding superstar, True Freshman C Spencer Bermudez, had a fantastic game. He finished with 13 points and 6 boards while shooting 4-7 from the floor and 5-7 from the free throw line in his 27 minutes of playing time.

Junior PG Durand Barlett chipped in 11 points while Freshman PF Boomer Payne tacked on 10 points of his own.

To be honest, I'm not sure how Gonzaga won the game. Like previously mentioned, the Spartans were the more talented and experienced team. The only two areas Gonzaga really outplayed Michigan State were in 3P% and in turnovers and the Bulldogs only turned the ball over 8 times... Versus a VERY good defense.

Gonzaga will move on to the Championship, where they got VERY luck because instead of UConn, they'll be playing the #2 seeded Charlotte 49ers. The 49ers defeated the #3 seeded UConn Huskies by a score of 83-69.

NCAA Tournament: National Championship Game Results

          April 7, 2014

March Madness is a wonderful thing. While Gonzaga's previous game was extremely high scoring. The National Championship Game vs. Charlotte was the exact opposite.

For the third consecutive game, Gonzaga held a lead under 4 points. At halftime, Gonzaga had a 33-32 lead thanks in part to Sophomore SF Sammy Sola draining a jumper with 3 seconds left in the half to give the Bulldogs their first lead since there was about 14 minutes left in the 1st half.

Charlotte and Gonzaga traded buckets to start the first half... And then both teams went on a 3 minute scoring drought.

After a Gonzaga timeout, the Bulldogs' whole mentality seemed to change. While they were a bit passive in up until that point, settling for contested jumpers and ill-advised shots. That all changed as they now attacked the basket with authority and if nothing was there, they'd kick it out to an open man.

Next thing you knew, a team led by mostly Sophomores and True Freshmen held a 60-51 lead with 4 minutes left in the National Championship Game. Could this young Gonzaga team hold on?

Charlotte SF Elliah Bland came off a well executed screen drove the basket and finished with an acrobatic layup at the rim. There was 3:33 left in the game, and Gonzaga was holding on to a 60-53 point lead.

Their ensuing play took a while to develop but once it did, Sammy Sola had a clear lane to the basket. Charlotte rotated over to defend the probable layup, but Sola kicked it out to the corner where Center Doug Montgomery was waiting. Montgomery shot a 3... And drained it. Gonzaga had a 10 point lead with 3 minutes left. Was Montgomery's 3 the dagger?

Keithan Krager stole the inbounds pass, immediately passed back to Sammy Sola who was open behind the 3 point line. Sola launched a 3... BANG. 66-53 with under 3 minutes left and Charlotte called a timeout. Gonzaga had ALL momentum and there wasn't enough time left for a comeback. Especially when the team had shot under 30% from the floor all game.

The young Bulldogs held on. For the first time in Gonzaga Basketball History, they were NCAA Champions as they defeated Charlotte in the National Championship Game by a score of 69-56.

Gonzaga was led by Tournament MVP, Sophomore SF Sammy Sola. Sola was 1 rebound shy of a double double in the National Championship Game! He finished with 21 points on 8-17 shooting from the floor, 2-7 from 3 point range, and 3-5 from the free throw line, while grabbing 9 boards.

Sophomore C Doug Montgomery finished with 12 points in just 15 minutes of playing time due to foul trouble. He shot 4-7 from the floor including knocking down his only two 3 point attempts. He also made 2-3 free throw attempts.

Sophomore SG Keithan Krager played an all around great game as he finished with 11 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 1 steal in his 28 minutes of playing time.

Junior SF Elliah Bland led the 49ers in scoring with 13 points. He shot 2-7 from the floor but made 9 out of 10 free throw attempts. He also finished with 5 rebounds and 3 steals.

Senior PF Branden Hartman stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals, and 1 assist in 28 minutes of playing time. He finished 4-10 shooting from the floor and 4-4 shooting from the charity stripe.

Junior PF Joe Fields also stuffed the stat sheet as he finished with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks, 3 steals, and 2 assists. Fields shot 3-10 from the floor and 4-5 from the free throw line.

Gonzaga won this game due to their incredible half court defense. They held Charlotte to a 29% Field Goal Percentage and held the 49ers to just 1 made 3 pointer the entire game.

This was the perfect way to cap a marvelous season for the now 36-2 Gonzaga Bulldogs. They only lose two seniors (Elton Briggs and Chester Reaves) and are about to bring in an extremely solid recruiting class. The future is extremely bright in Spokane, Washington.

Carmichael Stuns Country, Turns Down Duke Offer

SPOKANE, WA --- Legendary Duke coach, Mike Krzyzewski, retired after the conclusion of the Blue Devils' 2013-14 season.

The obvious choice to take over such a storied program would be the Coach that just won a National Championship at a Mid-Major school.

Shockingly that coach, Gonzaga's Danny Carmichael, turned the job offer down.

Carmichael would later post this statement on Social Media, "I'm honored and humbled to have been a top candidate for a Head Coaching job at a prestigious university like Duke. But at this time, I don't think that's a career move I should make for myself and for my family. I love what we've built so far during my short tenure at Gonzaga. I whole-heartedly believe that success will continue to come to this great program and I can't wait to see what the future holds."

Since Carmichael released that statement he has agreed to a 3 year extension with Gonzaga that will keep him under contract in Spokane through the 2018-19 season.

Gonzaga returns their top 9 players in terms of PPG and MPG. With another off-season for these returning players to get stronger and progress their skills, the Bulldogs could (and should) make another run at a National Championship this upcoming season.

                  2014 Signing Day

"Good things come to those who wait".

Gonzaga didn't sign a single player during the season for the first time in Danny Carmichael's tenure in Spokane.

However, to start the Spring Signing period, the Bulldogs landed 3 commits. All 3 commits are 4* recruits and are apart of the #25 Signing Class for Gonzaga.

Here is a breakdown of the 3 Gonzaga signees... And there's one thing you'll notice about the breakdowns about these players. They're all terrific athletes with above average skill sets that can be developed as they won't be needed to provide big minutes early in their careers:

4* SG, Willie Fellows (76 overall): Fellows is a 6'2, 178 lbs. Shooting Guard from San Francisco, CA. Fellows is an athletic freak, fantastic defensively, and a great distributor. At 6'2", Fellows has some serious hops and can throw down some vicious dunks. He's an outstanding perimeter defender is one of the top defensive guards in the 2014 Signing Class. He also has an unmatched motor. He never takes a play off and that's one of the things that Coach Carmichael loved about him.

4* PF, Dipo Bouma (77 overall): Dipo Bouma is a 6'7", 218 lbs. Power Forward from Ithaca, NY. Like Fellows, Bouma is an athletic freak and has an insane vertical for a Power Forward. He's a tremendous finisher around the rim with a great low post offensive game. He's also a solid low post defender and shot blocker. For now, he's an average rebounder, but that will get better with time. And get this, he's a great free throw shooter too. Something this Gonzaga team really needs.

4* SF, Otis Poole (78 overall): Otis Poole is a 6'4", 215 lbs. Small Forward from Houston, TX. He's a little undersized, but he makes up for it with his athleticism. All around, Poole is a great prospect. He can finish at the rim and he's got a really solid jump shot/3 pointer. He's a tremendous defender who specializes in perimeter defense, but he can also get up and block shots too. He's also a surprisingly good rebounder for only being 6'4".
