76ers Again Make no Major Moves

The offseason has came and gone and once again the 76ers have not made a major move. Many fans was hoping that would happen after once again not reaching the NBA finals. When asked our insider said they want to give this core 1 more chance to win a title. If atleast a championship doesn't happen this year then expect a big move to be made this offseason. They will have more cap flexibility this summer as Ingles, Roco and Fultz will be off the book. They could sign a high profile FA and then use bird rights to bring back Fultz and Roco.

The did lose the 5 million in salary that Holmes was making and even if they chose to trade Ingles they wouldn't have had huge $ to throw at a FA. This FA class also wasn't the best in the world and next years should be better. The most talked about name that could be traded is Joe Ingles. He has a been a fan favorite of Coach Brown and the 76ers took on a lot of cap the last few years. He is now 33 and in the final year of his deal at a fairly low price of 10 million. He isn't the player he was a few years ago, but still has A+ 3 point shooting and B+ defense. He has been a key role player for this team so it would take a great offer for this team to trade him.

We do expect a trade to happen at some point this year as another big is needed with Simmons playing SF and Holmes gone. Shaq's son will be given a chance to play key minutes every night and outside of him its the 7'3 Walter Tavares who has improved, but is a niche player. The rookie Bryan Pen Johnson is only 19 so he isn't ready to play key minutes on a finals team.

The question will be do they want to trade Joe Ingles who despite his age is still one of the better 3 & D guys in the NBA. Those veteran players like him are really needed off your bench come playoff time. The other players that could be traded that are young and have value are TLC and Justin Anderson both of which are under 4 million per year. When you look back at the smart thing to do may have been to overpay David Bertans and use him as a trade piece at the deadline.

        First Game In Cozumel

We are 24 games into the regular season and the 76ers sit atop the East with a 16 and 6 record. The beat the expansion Cozumel Cruisers earlier in the year and now will face them for the first time on the road.

Cozumel keep it close for a while and then the 76ers pulled away lead by a triple double for Ben Simmons. Embiid and Bol Bol post similar numbers down low while Covington has one of his better games scoring wise with 19 points. The rookie Bryan Penn Johnson made his NBA debut and was impressive with 6 points, 12 rebounds, 3 assist in 18 minutes.

            First Game In Nashville

The 76ers played the Nashville Outlaws for the first time this year and pick up a close victory. This improves their league leading record to 21 and 8. Bol Bol lead the way in scoring with with 25 points and 9 rebounds. Ben has a big game with 18 points, 20 rebounds, 4 assist and 4 steals the fans are expecting to see him in the thick of the MVP race when it comes out in a few days. Former 76ers PF Richuan Holmes plays 20 minutes and gets 1 point and 9 rebounds. The 76ers are rolling now playing some really good basketball with 4 players averaging over 17 points per game. The starters are getting more minutes then in years past as the bench isn't as deep as it has been.

              All Star Race

The initial reports for the all star race are out and you will see a lot of familiar faces even in year 2020 / 2021. Its looking like the 76ers will get 3 all stars this year in Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid and Markelle Fultz. This would be the 2nd all star appearance for Embiid and the 1st for Fultz. Ben is a near lock to keep his streak alive of being all star every year he has played. The fans were hoping to see Bol Bol make the all star team, but he isn't in the top 10.

                Bol Thriving In Starting Role

The 76ers sit with a comfortable lead as the #1 seed in the east and a big reason for that is 2nd year PF Bol Bol. He came off the bench last year and is taking full advantage starting teaming up with Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid for a frontcourt that is the best in the league.

It comes as no surprise that Bol is playing well as he was in the running for the rookie of the year and 6th man last year. He finished the year playing 29 minutes a game, 13.6 points, 9.1 rebounds and 1.9 blocks. This year while playing 10 more minutes a game he is up to 18.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks.

Everyone knew he would be able to rebound and block shots, but even those stats are ahead of expectations The biggest surprise has been the points as he currently leads the team in scoring. When he first joined the league he was strictly producing off his length and now he has improved his defense and rebounding. He can take all the credit when it comes to scoring as he is on the receiving end of a lot of Ben Simmons passes and easy looks.

The draft lottery shock out and the 76ers dropped from the 2nd pick to the 3rd in what is considered a 4 or 5 man draft as far as elite talent goes. R.J Barrett and Zion Williamson went in the top 2 as expected so the 76ers decided to trade back 2 slots expecting Cameron Reddish and Romeo Langford would go 3 and 4. The 76ers in trading back 2 slots picked up the 25th pick in this years draft and another pick next year, which should be in the 20’s. When asked about the trade the GM had this to say

“All along Bol Bol was our target we think he is the perfect fit with his ability to block shots and play defense. I’ve seen the message boards saying we should have gotten more in trading back. The way we see it is we got 2 free first round draft picks because even if we would have stayed at 3 Bol was going to be our pick”.

We have learned the reason Bol was targeted over Reddish and Langford is that he doesn't need the ball the score and produce. The 76ers was worried about bringing in a player that would effect team chemistry and would be needy on offense and unable to play defense.

It has been years since we have seen a player that’s as intriguing as Bol Bol. The first thing is his name, which everyone should know comes from his father Manute. If you haven’t heard the story he was a pioneer for his people in Sudan giving lots of $ and time trying to help out as unspeakable things was happening to innocent people. That ended up playing a role in his early death back in 2010. Just like his father, Bol Bol is very tall and thin and at 7’2 and 215 pounds with amazing 8’1 wingspan. The great thing about Bol is that he will be able to guard down low and on the perimeter as rookie. His offense is still a work in progress, but he can shoot from 3 and that’s something that should get better down the line. His height and offense rebounding should be where most his points come early on while his post game and shooting catch up.

“Everybody knows he has elite upside as a shoot blocker, defender and rebounder with his 8’1 wingspan. Once he got in for practice we saw his upside was even better then what our scouts thought. We don’t see him as a role player we see him as the 4th future all star in our starting lineup. “

The 76ers are already one of the best defense teams in the NBA and now this cements them as elite for many years to come. Bol will join elite defenders Embiid, Covington, Ingles, and Simmons. Fultz isn’t an elite defender yet, but he could be this time next year if he keeps on improving. Bol might even be able to play some SF in the right situation. We don’t expect him to get many minutes at the 3 this year, but it could happen in the years to come when his shooting improves and Ingles moves on.

The 76ers are loaded with depth at every position and we don’t expect any changes to be made to the starting lineup. The biggest chance for early playing time this year will be what happens to Okafor. If a team throws 17 million a year at him he will likely be gone as Holmes and Bol can hold the fort down at the backup 4 & 5 spots. Then you have Dario Saric who could potentially be moved at some point during the year as he due a big payday and isn’t starting. In the future Bol will settle in as the starting PF with Ben at PG, Fultz at SG, Covington at SF and Embiid at C.

We will have more on the rest of the 76ers draft soon for the time being everyone is ordering there Bol Bol jersey’s and anxiously awaiting summer league

He dominated the World vs USA game with 31 points, 41 rebounds, 12 assist, and 6 blocks

Bol Bol should be a elite shot blocker from day 1

                Bol's ratings as a rookie

                  Initial Award Races

The big news is that Ben Simmons is #1 in the MVP race with Westbrook not in the top 5. We don't expect Philly to keep 3 in the top 5 for long, but as long as the #1 record belongs to them then Ben has a great chance to take home MVP. Joel Embiid was robbed at the last minute for defense player of the year as Deandre Jordan took home the award. Those two look to battle it out again and with strong trade rumors circling around Jordan. The team most rumored to trade for Jordan is the Boston Celtics who have a big also in the mix so that will be interesting to follow.

                    Trade Alert

                    Celtics 24-26 (6th in east)
The Celtics are once again under achieving and the roster was to guard / wing heavy and greatly need a starting PF. Jordan is getting older, but is still arguably the best rebounder and defender in the NBA. Another person in the conversation will be his teammate in Bamba where they sit 1-2 in defense player of the year award. The two will make for a interesting pair down low and hopefully DJ can take him under his wing. Reid wasn't getting minutes as they had to many young PF's and Will Barton is a more proven player on a expiring contract. Heyward was in the final year of his contract and Jordan is under control for one more year. The Celtics had to try something new because this group just wasn't going to win the east.

                    Clippers 20-30 (last in west)
The Clippers tried to semi tank last year while Griffin was hurt and it didn't really work. Now they sit with the worst record in the West and just helped the chances of landing a top pick and cut a lot of salary. It didn't make sense for DJ at over 30 to be on a team going nowhere. They get back two young players on expiring contracts in Thomas Bryant and Trey Lyles. They are both young players and will see heavy minutes if they like them they can extend them if not they will just cut bait with a clean slate this summer. You have to assume Blake is the next player to be traded. They didn't want a SF in return with Dekker and Musa

                    Bulls 30-21 (2nd in east)
It didn't make sense for the Clippers to take back Heyward who was on a expiring contract so they called around to get a 3rd team involved and found the Bulls. They are finally turning young players into wins and sit with the 2nd best record in the east. They trade a bunch of spare parts on expiring contracts and get a legit star in Heyward. They now have a few months to prove to Heyward to sign a longer contract. They didn't trade anyone away that was in the rotation and get a upgrade at the weakest spot in there starting lineup. Its a no risk move for the Bulls, but one negative is this will reduce minutes for 3rd year SF Musidi.

                      Trade Alert

A smaller trade that saw two playoff teams sure up weak spots with the Thunder getting a backup PG and the Portland getting some help at SG and a 2nd round pick. Kay Felder had been the backup PG in OKC, but he is out for the year. Portland doesn't have a healthy backup SG so Hamilton will likely see some minutes. The two centers are only included for salary reasons.

                      Thunder 30-18 (4th)

                      Trail Blazers 29-19 (6th)

                        Trade Alert

                        Pistons 26-23 (4th in east)
The Pistons have made it to the final 2 years in a row, but the reality of the situation is they don't have enough scoring to get past the Warriors or 76ers. They trade Tobas Harris who has been productive starter, a good backup big and a 1st round pick that should be in the 20's for a legit #1 scorer in Kemba Walker. He is owed a lot of $ down the line so that could be a problem in a few years. Kemba gives them a go to scorer and with so many defense players around him he should easily score 20 a night. This will bump up Stanley Johnson to the starting unit. We would expect either Reggie Jackson or Patrick Beverly to be traded before the deadline for help at either SF or C.

                        Cruizers 22-26 (9th in east)
They are still hanging around the playoff race and trade the expiring contract of Lopez for Harris who is under control for next year which is key since they will not be able to sign a high profile FA. They still have Jahlil Okafor at Center and SF was the biggest hole on the team. They only have to give up a pair of future 2nds and Harris will be a solid starter in his prime for the 1st year expansion team. Their rookie PF Bazzey is scoring over 18 a game leading the rookie of the year award.

                        Hornets 14-35 (last in west)
We forgot when the last time the Hornets made the playoffs so its past time for this team to shake things up. Lopez and Ellenson are on expiring deals so this will save a lot of $ especially down the line where Kemba's contract has the potential to be ugly. Ellenson is young so he will start right away for the first time in his career. One of the requirement for trading Kemba was they had to get back PF/C's as they had plenty of wing players. They are in the race for the 1st pick and the extra first will give them another young player or trade asset. This will also give big minutes to 2nd year PG Darius Garland who was the 6th pick. The Hornets will now have a lot of cap space with Batum's and Frank's contract coming off the books this year.

                                All Star Break Standings

The Bulls who are finally done rebuilding and are tied for the 2nd best record in the East. They made a big trade a few weeks ago bringing in Gordon Hayward to make them a legit threat to win the east. The got some bad news as the first game after the all star break he broke his right leg and will miss 8 to 10 weeks. He will have a chance to return in the playoffs.
