Re: Coaching Legacy of Scott Ellis (CH2K8)

    UMBC vs. St. Francis (PA)
    November 12th, 2008 @ DeGol Arena

St. Francis (PA) easily defeated the UMBC Terriers tonight, 86-63.

The Red Flash put on a show in front of a sold out crowd at the DeGol Arena as they ran out to an early 12-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Terriers, that would be as close as this contest would get as the Red Flash cruised the entire way.

The Red Flash seemed to feed off the crowd as they forced 22 turnovers and held the terriers to 40% shooting from the field, including 13% from 3. St. Francis shot 47% from the field and 30% from 3. St. Francis ended up taking 25 more shots then UMBC took from the field this game.

St. Francis was led by Senior guard Matthew Green as he scored 17 points and pulled down 6 rebounds. The trio of Freshman had an outstanding game with all them reaching double figures. Kalu Bradley scored 12 points, Chas Daley scored 12 points and pulled down 5 rebounds, and Otis Graham scored 10 points off the bench.

The Terriers were led by star point guard Gaston Bright as he poured in 16 points and dished out 3 assists in the lost. Wilt Volpenhein scored 15 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Erroll Burnette just missed out on a double-double as he scored 12 points and grabbed 9 rebounds.

St. Francis (2-0) gets back to action on November 15th when they host Vermont (1-0)

Re: Coaching Legacy of Scott Ellis (CH2K8)

      Vermont vs. St. Francis (PA)
      November 15th, 2008 @ DeGol Arena

St. Francis (PA) barely squeaked by Vermont tonight, 74-64.

St. Francis held an early first half lead, making it as large as 10 points. However, Vermont was able to close the half going on a 11-0 run to take a 1 point lead into halftime.

After a back and forth affair for majority of the second half, with two minutes remaining and the Red Flash up one point. St. Francis guard Matthew Green who was at that moment 0-7 from 3, finally connected on his first 3 of the game to push the lead to 4. The next possession for Vermont would find Chaz Willingham driving to the basket, when Chas Daley came out of nowhere for an epic clutch block. Vermont was then forced to foul and the Red Flash were able to hit there free throws to close the game out.

St. Francis was led by Freshman forward Chas Daley as he scored 14 points, pulled in 6 rebounds, and swatted two shots. Matthew Green who struggled shooting the ball tonight, ended up with 13 points. Otis Graham came off the bench and scored 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds.

Vermont was led by star Junior guard Chaz Willingham as he scored a game-high 21 points in the losing effort. Lamont Riggs scored 9 points and dished out 6 assists.

St. Francis (3-0) heads down south to begin their Florida tour, which begins with 20th ranked Florida State.

Re: Coaching Legacy of Scott Ellis (CH2K8)

St. Francis (PA) vs. #25 Florida State
        November 18th, 2008 @ Donald L. Tucker Civic Center

Florida State used a 16-0 run late in the second half to come behind and defeat the upset minded St. Francis Red Flash, 70-65.

After leading much of the first half, Matthew Green closed out the first half with a buzzer beating three point shot to push the Red Flash lead to double digits to end the half.

St. Francis continued to push the tempo to begin the second half, which resulted to easy buckets in transition, resulting in a 16 point lead. With five minutes remaining and Florida State down 14 points, the Seminoles flipped the switch and forced turnover after turnover and quickly evaporated the double digit deficit and tied up the ball game at 65. The Seminoles then pounded the ball to 7'2 Center Aloysius Coly as he closed the game on his own 5-0 run to finish off the pesky Red Flash.

Aloysius Coly led the Seminoles tonight as he scored 14 points, grabbed 7 rebounds, and had 4 steals. Butch Lemons and Antawn Clemmons each chipped in 11 points.

St. Francis was led by Matthew Green who scored 15 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Chas Daley scored 13 points and Emanuel Eisentrout came off the bench and scored 11 points.

St. Francis (3-1) continues their Florida tour as they take on Miami (FL) (3-3) on November 23rd.

St. Francis (PA) vs. Miami (FL)
              November 23rd, 2008 @ Watsco Center

For the second time in as many days, St. Francis blew a late lead as Miami (FL) stormed back to win, 73-63.

St. Francis started the game on a 10-0 run, which resulted in a quick timeout from the Miami Head Coach. The two teams would trade baskets majority of the first half. Miami used a late 6-0 run to cut the lead down to 2 points at halftime.

St. Francis continued to lead most the second half as well. With five minutes remaining and down 3 points, Miami went on a 12-0 run to finally take the lead and push it up to 9 points. Unfortunately for the Red Flash, this run would seal their fate as they could not get any closer to the Hurricanes.

Miami was led by D.J. Bowens who scored a game-high 16 points. Rodrick Randolph chipped in 13 points. Freshman forward Dayshawn Benzel only scored 2 points, but had a game-high 14 rebounds for the Hurricanes.

Matthew Green led the Red Flash with 14 points but struggled with his shot, shooting 29% from the field. Ellis Matthews scored 13 points and had 3 steals. Chas Daley just missed out on his first career double-double, as he scored 8 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

St. Francis (3-2) ends their Florida trip on November 26th, when they travel to Gainesville to take on the Florida Gators.

                Recruiting Update

With early signing period right around the corner, Coach Ellis looks to make a splash with his second recruiting class. He has a lot of shoes to fill with this recruiting class as he has 6 scholarships to work with. Here are some recruits he's been targeting so far:

Kareem Barron, 6'5, 199lbs, SG, Pittsburgh, PA (#237 overall, #72 position)
He is a three star recruit coming out of Pittsburgh, PA. He's got great size for the SG position. He has a good three point shot and is a very crafty finisher around the rim. His weaknesses are he needs to get stronger and work on his ball handling. He averaged 6.4 ppg for the Cap City AAU team 100% interested, holds offers from St. Francis (PA) and VMI.

                Robbie Barnett, 6'4, 212lbs, SG, Winston-Salem, NC (#337 overall, #104 position)
He is also a three star SG prospect coming from North Carolina.
His biggest strengths is his athleticism, he is a high riser who throws down flashy dunks. He is also a tenacious defender as well. He needs to work on his three point shot and his overall basketball I.Q. He scored 11.3 ppg for the Wizards AAU team.
88% interested, holds offers from St. Francis (PA) and NC A&T. However, he is extremely interested in Wake Forest and will most likely commit to them if they decide to offer.

Lionel Barnett, 6'2, 178lbs, PG, Philadelphia, PA (#493 overall, #124 position)
He is a two star PG recruit hauling from Philadelphia, PA. He has good size for the PG position. He uses his size to finish in the paint against smaller defenders. He is also a very smart basketball player and has a great feel for the game on both sides of the court. His one major weakness is his three point shot. Scouts also didn't know to rate him since he didn't play AAU basketball. The league his high school plays in is not known for tough competition. 94% interested, only holds an offer from St. Francis (PA) but George Mason and Drexel have both shown interest in him.

Gail Cooperwood, 6'5, 199lbs, SG, Baltimore, MD (#710 overall, #180 position)
He is a two star PG recruit from Baltimore, MD. Another recruit that has great size for his position. His major strength is his three point shooting ability and he is a good rebounder for the guard position. He needs work on his ball handling and his overall quickness. He scored 7.9 ppg for his AAU team, the Ravens. 90% interested, holds offers from St. Francis (PA) and Navy. He is also receiving interest from Rider but they haven't offered him yet.

                  St. Francis (PA) vs. Florida
                  November 26th, 2008 @ Stephen C. O'Connell Center

Buzz Victoriano scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Florida Gators to a 81-60 victory over the St. Francis (PA) Red Flash.

The final score of the game does not represent how competitive it was. St. Francis was able to keep the game within double-digits for majority of the second half until the Gators closed the game out on a 16-2 run to end the game.

Florida played outstanding defense tonight as they used their superior length to force 12 turnovers and held St. Francis to 36% from the field and 19% (4-21) from the three point line.

Former 5-star recruit, R.C. McKinney joined Victoriano in double-digits as he scored 13 points. Bryant Hendry came off the bench and scored 11 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.

St. Francis was led by Freshman center Chas Daley as he just missed out on a double-double with 18 points and 9 rebounds. He also blocked 3 shots. Taj Lagana chipped in 13 points.

St. Francis (3-3) heads back to Loretto to start early conference play against Qunnipiac (4-4).

                    Early Signing Period

St. Francis (PA) received some good news coming back from Florida as SG Kareem Barron (#237 overall, #72 position) committed to the Red Flash. The 6'5 guard from Pittsburgh, PA committed to the Red Flash and will likely see significant minutes his Freshman year as St. Francis graduates every SG on the current roster. Coach Ellis on the news of Kareem Barron: "I'm extremely excited to hear that Mr. Barron has committed to our program. He is an outstanding basketball player but even a better person. He's got an excellent three point shot and has strong work ethic. We are thrilled for him to join us next year".

                          Northeast Conference Game

St. Francis (PA) held off the pesky Blackbirds from Long Island, 64-54.

St. Francis started the game on fire as they quickly built a double digit lead, which they would keep for the remainder of the half. The second half started the same as the first as the Red Flash pushed their lead up to 20+ points. However, Long Island would not give up as they continued to chip away at the lead. They would be able to cut the lead down to 8 points but unfortunately for the Black Birds, there was not enough to complete the comeback as St. Francis was able to hold on.

Emanuel Eisentrout scored 13 points off the bench to lead the Red Flash in scoring. Matthew Green chipped 11 points. Chas Daley and Otis Graham each chipped in 8 points.

Vincent Minnifeld and Nikola Peciukas each scored 11 points to lead the Black Birds. Brennon Souffrant chipped in 8 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.

St. Francis (5-3, 2-0) welcomes Binghamton to the DeGol Arena on December 9th.

                              December 14th, 2008 @ DeGol Arena

Freshman center Chas Daley had a monster double-double tonight to lead St. Francis (PA) to a close victory tonight over the Drexel Dragons, 60-56.

Daley scored 18 points and pulled down 16 rebounds tonight (both career-high's) to lead the Red Flash in both categories.

St. Francis (PA) started off the game struggling to break the Dragons press, as they forced 4 straight turnovers leading to easy baskets which resulted in Drexel taking an early double-digit lead. However, St. Francis pulled together a 22-5 run starting at the end of the first half and continuing into the second half to take a 8 point lead. St. Francis and Drexel then continued to trade baskets throughout the remainder of the game. Then the Red Flash used clutch free throws to close out the game.

Both teams struggled shooting the ball tonight, as St. Francis shot 35% from the field while Drexel shot 31% from the field, including 27% from three. St. Francis held a massive advantage at the free throw line, as they shot 29 attempts (making 23) while Drexel only shot 18 attempts (making 12).

Matthew Green and Taj Lagana each chipped in 11 points for the Red Flash.

Drexel was led by Toby McCarthy as he scored 12 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. P.J Goia scored 10 points and grabbed 6 rebounds.

St. Francis (7-3, 2-0) travels up to Massachusetts on December 20th to take on UMass (6-4, 0-0).
