1905 - MLB Year In Review

It was a pitcher's year in the American League as there were only four regular .300 hitters, the New York team batting average was .264 and it was good enough to score a league-leading 689 runs and bring the franchise back from the disaster in 1902 to the league title. The Highlanders' return to contending after a couple of years came about through Mike Donlin's league-leading .325 batting average and the arm of Bob Ewing, who won 23 games. The team had a really good 2.59 team ERA but the league leading honors went to the second place Washington Senators, whose staff compiled an ERA of 2.30.

Although Washington's pitching was great enough to make the race a photo-finish between themselves and the Highlanders, most of the season saw a three-way race between New York, Washington and Detroit, the defending champs. The Tigers faded in the end as they started September 8.5 games behind and finished 13 games back. The Senators hung close to the Highlanders but even with the strong hitting of Nap Lajoie, the team didn't have enough muscle to overtake New York. Boston continued a free-fall down through the standings as only Case Patten provided any consistency on the staff of the Pilgrims. 38-year old Cy Young had his worst record since joining the AL (13-25) and was not offered an extension, making him a free agent. The White Sox finished in sixth place, one above Boston, but saw what could be a glimpse of better things to come as 18-year old Ty Cobb, after struggling and hitting .240 as a part-time outfielder, came back and batted .284 in his first full season.

In the National League, the Giants had a rough race with the Chicago Cubs but managed to repeat as league champs by clinching the title on the last day of the season. Chicago kept within striking distance as the team headed into September trailing by three games then they got on a hot streak and passed New York into first place and lead by 3.5 games with only ten games remaining. The Giants came back though as they tied the Cubs with four games remaining then took the lead the day after. The Giants had a league-high 789 runs scored and were lead by hitters George Stone and Cy Seymour. Their pitching star was once again Christy Mathewson, who won 23 games and struck out 209 batters in 333 innings.

The Cubs had a tremendous 2.10 team ERA and were lead by their ace, Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown, who tied for the league lead with 26 wins and was second with a 2.08 ERA.

After a one-year absence, the World Series resumed with the Giants still hot as they defeated their intra-city AL rivals, 4 games to 1, behind the pitching of Harry Felix, who won two games, and the hitting of Cy Seymour, who hit the first two homeruns in World Series history.

1906 - MLB Year In Review

After 19 years of pennant drought in the National League stronghold of Chicago, victory at last was in sight. The rooters of the Chicago Cubs, the NL entry in that city since 1876, had not been able to reap the fruits of success since the summer of '86. After coming close only to falter and finish second the last three seasons, the city of Chicago finally had their title. And did they ever as the Cubs rolled over the National League and won by 15 games over the second place Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pittsburgh Pirates stayed with the Cubs as they headed into September only 8 games behind, but fell back farther as the Cubs continued to roll and the Pirates hit a cold streak in the middle of the month. The hitting attack was lead by Harry Lumley, who led the senior loop in average, batting .317, in home runs with 6 and in runs batted in with 115, winning the Triple Crown. On the mound, the Cubs were led once again by the arm of Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown, who won 30 games and had a 1.83 ERA. Frank Chance finished tied for second in home runs with 4, finished third in runs scored with 86 and led the NL in stolen bases with 47.
In the American League, the New York Highlanders had their hands full with the St.Louis Browns and the Chicago White Sox breathing down their necks. When September rolled around, New York had a 6.5 game lead over St.Louis and a 7 game lead over Chicago. St.Louis had actually taken over the lead with 5 games remaining in the schedule but the Highlanders overtook them on the next to last day of the season and clinched the title on the last day. The Highlanders were led once again by the hitting of Mike Donlin, who won the AL's Outstanding Batter award, and by the pitching of Addie Joss, who won 24 games and also had a 1.85 ERA.
The World Series looked to be a runaway as the Highlanders won the first three games, but the Cubs won the next two games before surrendering to the Highlanders in game six as the Highlanders won, 4 games to 2.

                    Re: 1906 Awards & Things

Please note: Due to not being able to edit the first few posts in this thread, I will have to put the career leaders chart, as well as the others including the Hall of Fame, after each season right after the winter meetings. That is going to make this thread much longer than it should be.

Would you readers like to participate a little? You could be members of my "Veteran's Committee" for the Hall of Fame. If you see someone that retired and didn't make my Hall of Fame, but you think that they should belong, then you can tell me who that person is. If that player is in the actual Hall of Fame, then I will "induct" them.

At least in my Hall of Fame, no players are banned. Some players in real life are banned, as you well know. Guys like Joe Jackson and Pete Rose.

The "Babe" should be coming along soon. It'd be interesting to see which team picks him up and how good he'll be.

Since it seems like the players are coming a year earlier, it looks like George Ruth should be popping up in either 1912 or 1913 as a pitcher. Some people have told me that ootp7 will move him to the outfield and/or first base after a few years.

In the latest first-year draft, we have "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and Frank "Home Run" Baker along with "Smokey" Joe Wood. They went to the Cardinals, the White Sox and the Phillies, respectively.

It sure is and with a different twist as I am going by today's financial settings including arbitration and free agency along with the incoming players being drafted and not placed on their origional teams.
