Re: "Mountaineers Are Always Free"
I'll try not to disappoint.
Yeah, finally the weekend is here! Thank goodness, I can finally get a game in. I've been pretty busy lately and haven't had enough time to get a full game in. My 360 got the 3 rings of death, though, so this and my 2K5 Panthers Franchise will be just about all I'll play, except GTA: San Andreas (I just started playing it again and it is fun!). Anyways, expect the first game tonight...hopefully.Comment

Overtime Thriller in the Carrier Dome
Colson Racks up 178 Total Yards in Win
Syracuse, NY - The Syracuse Orange (0-0, 0-0 Big East) and the West Virginia Mountaineers (0-0, 0-0 Big East) played their very first game of the season today as well as their very first conference game. On paper, this looked like a good game. Both teams were rated 56 or lower in the preseason 119 and were battling for a bowl bid and to start off their Big East schedules strong.
With Syracuse ahead 17-6 heading into the 4th quarter, West Virginia made a furious comeback attempt, fueled by the legs of James Colson and Pat White, along with the arm of Adam Bednarik. The Mountaineers would score 3 touchdowns in the 4th quarter along and would set up for a 49 yards field goal for the win with the game tied at 27. Sophomore kicker Colby Jones hooked the kick very wide left and walked off the field in great dismay as he thought may have lost them the game.
In overtime, the Mountaineers would drive right down the field via the arm of Adam Bednarik as he threw a touchdown pass to Brandon Myles to make it 34-27. In overtime, the Orange would be forced to try a 4th and 16. Syracuse's quarterback was hit hard by senior defensive end Ernest Hunter as the game ended with a 7 point overtime thriller for the Mountaineers.
Unfortunately, West Virginia's run defense was, simply put, horrible in every fashion. The Orange gathered 312 rushing yards in the game as the Mountaineer defense had no answer as Syracuse continually grinded it out.
Jason Colson was great for the Mountaineers as he tallied 135 rushing yards in the game along with a touchdown on 21 carries. He also caught 5 passes for 43 yards to go along with 15 broken tackles as he ran over defenders at will it seemed.
The Syracuse Orange fall to 0-1 while the Mountaineers improve to 1-0. West Virginia will take on Wofford next week in what should be a very easy win against an 1-AA team.

Maryland Offense "Parked" in College Park
Gwanltney and Mountaineers Rush for 328 Yards in Dominating Win
College Park, MD - Domination. That is exactly what happened on a bright Saturday afternoon as the Mountaineers ran all over Maryland, winning by a stunning score of 48-10. Maryland scored no offensive touchdowns in the game as their lone touchdown was off a 79 yard punt return. The Mountaineers were held scoreless in the 1st quarter before erupting to 24 points in the 2nd quarter and would take a 31-0 lead in the 3rd quarter before Maryland finally got on the board in the middle of the 3rd quarter with a 30 yard field goal.
The Mountaineers had a field day on the ground as they gathered 328 rushing yards and 526 yards of total offense on the day. Jason Gwanltney had his first big game as a Mountaineer, as he picked up a career-high 142 yards and a touchdown on just 11 carries, or an average of 12.9 yards per carry. Jason Colson added 87 yards and another touchdown and Pat White gather 61 yards on 12 carries. Even Pernell Williams got in on the action, as he carried the ball 6 times for 41 yards and a touchdown.
Adam Bednarik was efficient again today, and is yet to throw an interception this season. He completed 10 of 17 passes today for 174 yards and 2 touchdowns, adding to a very good quarterback rating of 183.6. He hit Rayshawn Bolden with a 61 yard touchdown pass at the beginning of the 3rd quarter. Bolden ended the game with 3 receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown. Brandon Myles caught Bednarik's other touchdown pass as Mike grabbed 4 receptions for 45 yards.
The Mountaineers surprised many with their spectacular effort. They will certainly go into Morgantown next week with plenty of confidence as they will face off against the East Carolina Pirates.
With the win, the Mountaineers improve to 3-0 (1-0).
