West Virginia Beats Pitt 28-17 in the "Backyard Brawl"

Morgantown, WV - On a windy, snowy, and cold Saturday night in Morgantown, the West Virginia Mountaineers were crowned champions of the Big East Conference. Pittsburgh, without their spectacular starting quarterback, Tyler Palko, had to rely on sophomore Shane Murray to lead the powerful Pitt offense. Murray's inexperience, combined with the blinding snow and howling winds, gave Pittsburgh it's lowest output in points this entire season, as they only put up 17 points in the game. On the season, they were averaging 40.9 points per game. Pittsburgh only put up 214 yards of total offense in the game as well.

The first quarter ended with a scoreless game as both teams struggled mightily to generate any sort of offense as the snow piled up. The field crew struggled to clear the snow off the field markers as they continually had to use tractors to clear the snow off the hash marks as the snow came down. Players were slipping as the snow gave them no traction. Mud was abundant on the field as well, as both teams were sliding all over the place.

At the beginning of the 2nd quarter, Pittsburgh's Josh Cummings muscled a 27 yard field goal over the goalposts in a wicked crosswind to make the game 3-0 Pitt early on. Pittsburgh would go on to take a 10-7 lead, until Jason Colson ran in for a touchdown with 42 seconds left before halftime to make the score 14-10 at halftime.

Both teams would tack on touchdowns in the 3rd quarter as the snow picked up again, after letting up a bit in the 2nd quarter, allowing the powerful offenses to get going. Jason Colson delivered the dagger for Pitt with 3 minutes left to make the score 28-17. Shane Murray would proceed to throw his second interception of the game, giving West Virginia the ball back. West Virginia ran out the clock and were declared 2005 Big East Champions! Not to mention, of course, knocking Pitt out of National Title contention (payback for real life, eh?).

Coach Bill Stewart was very pleased with the win and the Big East Championship. "We have played as a team all year and it has payed off," he said. "We have played as one. We have no egos; we just go out there and do our jobs and it has given us a nice trophy. 7-0 in conference play is certainly something to be proud of. I wish we would not have lost the game to Virginia Tech earlier this season, but we'll get them back next year when we visit Blacksburg. Now, we're going to begin bowl preparations and celebrate a bit, too!"

Jason Colson was the key for the Mountaineers tonight. The howling winds and heavy snow made it hard to move the ball through the air with any consistency, so the Mountaineers handed the ball off to Jason Colson 29 times, and he got 214 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns out of it. Colson used the slippery conditions to his advantage, as defenders were falling all around him. He moves closer to the 2,000 yard rushing mark and being immortalized into the list of Heisman Trophy winners.

With the win, the Mountaineers finish the season 10-1 (7-0) and are the 2007 Big East Champions. The Mountaineers are yet to be slotted into a bowl, but we know they'll be heading to a BCS bowl, for sure.

West Virginia Signs Two More Recruits

Morgantown, WV - Two more recruits signed their letters of intent to play football for West Virginia University next fall. The Mountaineers signed a 4 star recruit in outside linebacker Lawrence Williams and 3 star left tackle Jason Edwards. Matt Leinart Wins Heisman Trophy

New York, NY - Matt Leinart of the USC Trojans was named the 2005 Heisman Trophy Winner tonight after having a spectacular season as quarterback of the USC Trojans. The Senior narrowly beat out Jason Colson of West Virginia University in the final voting. Leinart has led the Trojans to the National Championship for the second straight season, as they will face off against the Tennessee Volunteers.

Mountaineers Bring Home 4 Trophies

Morgantown, WV - Three West Virginia players brought home 4 trophies this season as the Mountaineers won a Big East Title. Jason Colson brought home the Maxwell Trophy as well as the Walker Award. Left guard Dan Mozes brought home the award for best Offensive Lineman. Coach Bill Stewart managed to secure a Coach of the Year Award as well in this glorious day of trophies for the Mountaineers.

West Virginia Accepts Sugar Bowl Bid

New Orleans, LA - West Virginia has accepted a bowl bid to play the hated #13 Michigan Wolverines in the Nokia Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day at 8:00 p.m. The Wolverines are the team that hired former West Virginia Coach Rich Rodriguez, so this could turn into a very heated matchup on both sides of the ball.

The Wolverines are ranked #13 and have an 8-3 overall record and 6-2 in the Big 10. After winning their last two games, including a win over Ohio State, the Wolverines have captured the Big 10 Title. They are lead by quarterback Chad Henne and sensational runningback Michael Hart.

The game is scheduled for January 1, 2006 and will be broadcast live on ABC in full HD.

Yes, robbed. We had two 2 loss teams over us.

Actually, we got a bid to the Sugar Bowl for some reason. I am not sure why, but it seems so close to real life, when WVU played in the Sugar Bowl. Only this time, we will play the Michigan Wolverines instead of the Georgia Bulldogs. It was meant to be to play the evil Michigan Wolverines, I guess.
