Left: HB Jamie McCoy (20att,2rec,5 tot-ret,287 a-p yards, 2td) | Center: CB Pedro Bell strip of Bernard
Right: QB Kyle Harper (354 pass yards, 4 td passes)

      FRANK-LY NOT GOOD ENOUGH
The Cyclone defense crumbled under the relentless aerial attack of the Huskies, fall by 14.

SEATTLE, Washington- One week into the 2016 season was all it took for last season’s Cinderella team to be knocked off their pedestal.

Most if not all the blame could rest solely on the defenses shoulders as they gave up more yards and points to Washington, 444 and 49, then they had given up to any opponent all of last year.

Washington’s junior wide receiver Matt Frank was the player most responsible for inflicting so much damage to the Cyclones defense as Frank hauled in 7 passes for 219 yards and a team record 4 touchdowns, not to mention his fourth quarter 99-yard kickoff return which at that time gave Washington the lead back at 35-28.

“Covering him was damn near impossible,” said Mitchell. “Our guys looked completely overmatched…oh to have Holt again.”

In a pass happy conference like the Big 12 early signs of a teams inability to stop the pass could be an early death sentence which could result in a very, very long year for the Cyclones.

More surprising than the fact that Iowa State’s defense allowed 49 points and 444 yards to a C+ offense was the fact that the Cyclones still had a chance to tie the game up at 42 with under 2:30 to play.

That was until Kentucky transfer WR George Bernard was stripped by CB Pedro Bell on the Washington 32-yard line after Bernard had gained 43 yards on a slant route.

Washington would go on to crush any hope Iowa State had of getting back in the game after HB Adam ‘no, not pacman’ Jones scored from 27 yards out to put the Huskies on top comfortably 49-35 with 50 seconds left to play in the Fourth.

“It’s definitely not the way we wanted to start of the 2106 season,” said Coach Mitchell. “We’ve already put ourselves behind the 8-ball when it comes to non-conference play which usually has a significant effect on whether or not you go to a bowl game at the end of the year.”

Not to long ago Coach Mitchell and the Cyclones found out just how important winning their non-conference games were as they finished the year 5-3 in Big 12 play but 1-3 in non-conference play, as a result they were not invited to a post season bowl game much to the dismay of Coach Mitchell and all of Iowa State’s loyal followers.

HB Jamie McCoy | HB Mark Miller | QB Jeremy Allen | HB Zach Williams

          THE MORE THINGS CHANGE,
THE MORE THEY STAY THE SAME

Coach Mitchell looks to have built yet another juggernaut of an offense, smash rival Iowa by 25.

IOWA CITY, Iowa- What happens when offensive skill and speed faces off against sub par defenses? You get the type of offensive shootout we saw Saturday night when Iowa State and Iowa got together for their annual in-state rivalry game.

2014 Kansas transfer QB Jeremy Allen had a night to remember tossing five touchdown passes to go along with his 250 passing yards and zero interceptions. Only two games into the 2016 season Allen has completed 32-of-48 passes for 443 yards and 7 touchdowns, every one of them to a different receiver. If not for an interception on a hail marry on the last play of the game against Washington his stat line would appear unblemished.

With every season that passes and every recruit signed the Iowa State football team is looking more and more like Coach Mitchell’s previous team the Kentucky Wildcats.

A strong armed quarterback that’s accurate, a game breaking wide receiver, and of course a running game that would scare even the Nebraska defenses of yester year.

All three facets were on full display against Iowa as the Cyclones offense torched the 68th rated defense of the Hawkeyes putting up nearly 500 total yards of offense, 239 of that on the ground.

“This is really the first time that I’ve ever been able to institute a dual running back system and boy is it fun to watch,” said Coach Mitchell. “When I was at Kentucky the full weight of the running game was placed upon Brandon Powell’s shoulders. However this year I’m able to distribute the bulk of the carries between both Mark Miller and Jamie McCoy who are both are extremely gifted runners.”

Both Jamie McCoy and Mark Miller surpassed the 100-yard plateau with each finding the end zone at least once. However, Miller got his touchdowns on the ground while McCoy got his touchdown through the air.

Iowa (1-1) made things a little interesting in the third quarter when they refused to give up outscoring the Cyclones 20-14 mostly impart to 5’11”, 211 pound junior tailback Zach Williams, who was held to only 39 yards and one touchdown in the first half but exploded in the second half rushing for 135 yards and another touchdown.

“Obviously I don’t know what to look for when recruiting defense,” said Mitchell. “My defenses always deteriorate the longer I’ve been at a school, I can recruit players for an outstanding offense but my defenses always come up short which forces us to get in games like this, the ones where we have to score practically every time we get the ball…that’s a difficult way to play offense.”

Iowa State (1-1) will head home for their 2016 home opener where they’ll face off against the red hot 2-0 Arizona State Sun Devils.

                  CB Richard Shaw pick-6 in 3rd | HB Mark Miller (3kr,145yds,td) | HB Jamie McCoy (13att,4rec,177 a-p yards,2td)

                  FLASHBACK
Cyclones D steps up in 34-17 victory over Sun Devils.

AMES, Iowa- With three of the Cyclones next four games against top 25 teams a victory against the Arizona State Sun Devils was not only import but for all intensive purposes a must win.

A disrespected defense and a specialty teams unit that was on top of their game made that outcome a reality, doubling up the Sun Devils 34-17.

Arizona State (2-1) looked unbeatable early thanks to a defense that stifled the nation’s 11th ranked offense holding the Cyclones to just 2 first downs and 22 total yards, that was until the Cyclones offense got a massive jolt mid-way through the second quarter when freshman tailback Jamie McCoy caught a 68-yard touchdown to pull Iowa State to within 3 at 10-7.

Kicker Michael Williams would go onto to tie the game up at 10 as time expired in the first half.

On the third play from scrimmage just 32 seconds into the third quarter All-American CB Richard Shaw picked off Arizona State QB Adam Foster and returned it 30 yards to the house giving Iowa State a 7-point advantage at 17-10.

Shaw’s pick six did more than give Iowa State a 7-point advantage it gave the Cyclones defense a new found sense of confidence, confidence which the D has been sorely lacking ever since being shredded in week 2 against Washington.

From that point on Iowa State’s defense played nearly perfect allowing just one Arizona State touchdown.

Mark Miller’s 94-yard kickoff return with 3:18 left in the third quarter was all Iowa State would need to walk away with the victory, however, just for security reasons the Cyclones would go on to score 10 more points and in doing so put the game away at 34-17.

“Hopefully this type of showing by our defense is exactly what they need to become the shut down D we were last year, I know this is basically a new defense but it only takes one great showing to get on a roll,” said Coach Mitchell. “A little confidence can go along way, it was about 3 games into last year before our D caught fire, maybe history will repeat itself.”

                    LONE STAR STANDOUT
Travis Lindsey and company send Iowa State back to Ames with a 28-14 loss.

AUSTIN, Texas- After losing their first game of the 2016 season last week to then unranked Georgia 20-10, the No. 17 Texas Longhorns looked to their Big 12 conference opener against the Iowa State Cyclones to rebound and get back to their winning ways.

The Longhorns 6’4”, 192 pound sophomore QB Travis Lindsey picked apart the Cyclone secondary throughout the first half completing 18-of-19 passes for 221 yards and 3 touchdowns. Iowa State’s halftime adjustments limited the amount of damage Lindsey inflicted but not his effectiveness as Lindsey finished the evening completing a whooping 26-of-28 passes for 272 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Although extremely bent the Cyclones D never broke, allowing only 28 points and 362 yards of total offense to a Texas team which had averaged 39.6 and 472.3 respectively.

“I was extremely impressed our D stood tough under the immense pressure of Lindsey’s aerial gutting of our secondary,” said Mitchell. “For our defense to give our offense chance after chance to score and tie the game early in the fourth quarter is all a coach can really ask for.”

The Longhorns defense, which came into Saturday night ranked 9th nationally, suffocated Iowa State’s offense holding them to only one offensive touchdown and 57 yards rushing. Prior to tonight the Cyclones offense averaged 40.3 points per game and 162 yards rushing.

“They were extremely tough and disciplined,” said senior QB Jeremy Allen, who completed only 52 percent of his passes for 112 yards. “They were physical up front and they were just as physical on the corners, they made it practically impossible to find any passing lanes and they weren’t afraid to bring the blitz and leave guys matched up outside one on one…they knew they were going to get to me before our receivers had time to get open.”

Iowa State’s 14-point loss to Texas drops them to 0-10 all time against the Longhorns and 0-5 at DKR-Texas Memorial dating back to 1999.

Iowa State’s only so called break in their hellish four-game swing will come next week when they travel back home to take on the 1-3 Nebraska Cornhuskers, a meeting which has rapidly been elevated to a must win for the 2-2 Cyclones.

FS Bryan Pettit int inside Nebraska territory | QB Maurice Fuqua (50%,207yds, 3int)

                      IT’S MILLER TIME!
Mark Miller runs wild in Iowa State’s 42-point demolition of Nebraska.

AMES, Iowa- Coach Mitchell figured there was a possibility that his tailback was going to have a performance like this…he just didn’t figure it would be Mark Miller.

Red-shirt senior HB Mark Miller slashed and gashed the ‘Huskers defense to the tune of 185 yards and 5 touchdowns – tying the Iowa State single game touchdown rushing record.

“When I noticed the ‘Huskers had the 96th ranked rush defense in the nation prior to this afternoon I got all warm and tingly inside knowing the type of firepower we have in the backfield,” said Mitchell. “However, it never crossed my mind that it was going to be Mark Miller to run wild and not freshman Jamie McCoy.”

Coach Mitchell unleashed the dawgs early and often outscoring Nebraska 21-3 in the first quarter thanks to three Mark Miller touchdown runs.

In the first half Miller touched the ball 3 times for a mind blowing 122 yards and 3 touchdowns.

“They couldn’t contain him let alone stop him,” said Mitchell. “Even when I had Brandon Powell, I never witnessed a back touch the ball three times resulting in three touchdowns. These weren’t little 1-yard gimmes either, he scored from 11 yards out, 56 yards out, and 55 yards out, simply unstoppable.”

Nebraska’s half time adjustments were enough to corral Miller for the most part as Miller finished the afternoon rushing for 185 yards on 18 carries and 5 touchdowns.

With the game practically over by half time with the score being 38-3 in favor of Iowa State, the second half was more about ball control for the Cyclones and running out the clock than scoring, however, Nebraska’s Maurice Fuqua made that ‘whole not scoring thing’ a little difficult as he couldn’t help but throw the ball to Iowa State players, three different time to be exact. Fuqua’s three second half interceptions rendered 14 Iowa State fourth quarter points which made it look as though Coach Mitchell intentionally tried to run up the score.

“Although it’s just a video game I try not to put up more points than are necessary to win,” said Mitchell. “Looking at the box score it looks like we purposely tried to run up the score since we didn’t score in the third, Bo (referring to Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini) knows we didn’t but it still looks bad on our part.”

The 42-point beat down Iowa State laid on Nebraska didn’t come without a price however, as true freshman tailback Jamie McCoy will miss next week’s monster of a game against No. 11 Oklahoma with a sprained knee which he suffered shortly after the start of the third quarter.

Speaking of No. 11 Oklahoma the Cyclones will need to bring their A game next week if they expect to even be completive. They also must find some way of containing HB Wesley Session, who is ranked third on the Heisman watch list, and the Sooners 8th ranked rushing attack.

However, Oklahoma’s weakness, if you can call it a weakness, is their defense which is ranked 38th overall and 45th in rush defense, which on average allows 122 yards per game on ground. Iowa State’s only chance in this game is if Mark Miller can have a repeat performance of today and the Cyclones D can hold Oklahoma under their average of 31.8 points per game.

Expect either or shootout or a blowout.

3-2 is not that bad when all your losses are pretty decent.

Its also okay when you crush your oppenent by like 40 every game you win. Nice job beating the Huskers.

Nice win over Nebraska, but can you pull off the upset over Oklahoma?

                            Texas's D was insanely good but I wasn't to disappointed I lost.

That is the question, their starting QB is out so I think that could be enough to pull of the upset. I need to make a statement early and hopefully the momentum will carry me the rest of the way.

Cyclones run past Sooners in a 14-point offensive and defense clinic.

NORMAN, Oklahoma - The No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners must have forgot all about Iowa State’s 14-0 dream season from a year ago in which they defeated No. 2 Kentucky in the BCS National Championship game 30-15, how else could you rationalize the beat down Iowa State put on them Saturday afternoon in Norman.

Or maybe they were well aware of Iowa State’s capabilities but in fact were just not as good as previously advertised.

Don’t let the final score fool you as this was an outright a** whooppin handed down by the Cyclones.

Iowa State’s defense was playing like the defense of 2015 if not better, holding an Oklahoma team that came in averaging 31.8 points per game and 404 yard of total offense to 20 and 269 respectively.

“Take away some half a** tackling in the final minutes which yielded all 20 Oklahoma points and our defense only allowed 150 yards and zero points to an offense as potent as Oklahoma,” said Coach Mitchell. “That’s not only great that’s phenomenal, I thought I was going to witness a 34-0 shutout which would’ve had me pinching myself…but I’ll settle for the 14-point win I guess.”

Iowa State’s Jamie McCoy and Mark Miller exposed the Sooners 38th ranked defense rushing for a combined 219 yards and 3 touchdowns – all scored by true freshman Jamie McCoy.

As the third quarter came to a close with Iowa State sitting on an unforeseen 17-0 lead you could just feel the dismay inside Oklahoma Memorial as the Sooners faithful knew the outcome that was in store.

Iowa State tailback Jamie McCoy gave them no reason to think otherwise scoring the second of his three total touchdowns on the afternoon with 5:24 remaining to put the Cyclones up 24-0.

On the ensuring kickoff senior wide receiver Paul Cook smashed Coach Mitchell’s dream of a shutout when he returned the kick 103 yards to the house putting Oklahoma’s first points of the afternoon on the board but a failed 2-point conversion attempt made the score 24-6.

A Sooner onside kick attempt that was recovered by Iowa State gave the Cyclones the ball inside Oklahoma territory, three plays later Jamie McCoy would score the third of his three total touchdowns on a 30-yard run that dazzled even the Sooner fans.

Down 31-6 Oklahoma continued to play hard scoring on their next two possessions. The Sooners got a 45-yard touchdown run out of red shirt junior HB Nathan Henderson and a 74-yard touchdown run out of Heisman candidate HB Wesley Session as time expired.

Oklahoma’s real problems began 3 weeks prior to this afternoon’s game when first-string quarterback Travis Collins went down with a partially torn MCL against Indiana in week 4.

Since being inserted into the starting lineup back-up QB Robbie Hubbard has really struggled which has lead to a 1-2 Oklahoma record with losses to No. 12 Texas and here today against 4-2 Iowa State.

The road for Hubbard and Oklahoma doesn’t get any easier as three of their next four games are against top 25 teams, Colorado, Missouri, and Texas A&M before Collins will be cleared to play again.

Expect Oklahoma to be shuffled to the middle of the pack in the Big 12 unless Hubbard all the sudden becomes Sam Bradford or Jason White.

                                NO ANSWER
Cyclones D had no answer for Morrison and the Tech passing game, fall 37-30.

AMES, Iowa - There was just one thing on the players mind at Texas Tech prior to Saturday night’s tussle with Iowa State – REVENGE.

After last season’s epic 21-point fourth quarter comeback by Iowa State over Texas Tech in the Big 12 Championship game, many around the Red Raider program looked to tonight to take out any lingering frustrations they still had bottled up over last season’s 27-24 loss which sent Iowa State to the National Championship and Texas Tech to the Sugar.

Despite throwing three interceptions Texas Tech senior QB Ron Morrison still managed to lead the Red Raiders to a 37-30 victory over Iowa State on October 15, 2016.

Morrison finished the game completing 27-of-40 passes for 355 yards and 4 touchdowns.

“I knew they were going to light us up through the air,” said Coach Mitchell. “We had the nation’s 102nd ranked pass defense coming into tonight while they had the nation’s No. 1 pass offense, do you really think I was naive enough to believe that we were going to slow them down? I was just hoping Morrison would make enough mistakes to keep us in the game…he did, but their defense, especially their run defense was a whole lot better then I thought it was, consequently leading to our demise.”

Texas Tech held the two headed monster that is McCoy and Miller in check the whole night, limiting the two backs to 81 yards on 28 carries and 1 single touchdown – which came with less than 2:00 to play in regulation.

The lack of a consistent running game by the Cyclones lead to an inability to convert on third down which proved to be Iowa State’s achillies heel throughout the night, as they ended up converting on only 3-of-10 tries resulting in stalled drives and four Michael Williams punts.

However, even with the lack of a running game and a defense that was getting shredded apart by the aerial assassin Ron Morrison the Cyclones still had a glimmer of hope with less than 1:30 to play to drive the length of the field and tie the game up at 37.

But an unbelievable pick that you just have to see to believe by Texas Tech OLB John Kane on the Cyclones second play from scrimmage with 1:18 remaining essentially ended any chances Iowa State had of a come back thus sending Texas Tech back to Lubbock with the revenge win they so desperately wanted.

“As much as it pains me to say this, they deserved to win this game,” said Mitchell. “If not for three bone head throws on the part of Morrison we would have been blown out…badly. I’m not saying I wouldn’t have taken the win if we did come back but sometimes you just rather lose than to win because of arid CPU throws no human player in their right mind would throw. At least that’s how I look at things.”
The loss drops Iowa State to 2-2 in Big 12 play and 4-3 overall and dangerously close, at least for now of flirting with another 6-6 season which as we all know too well doesn’t assure the Cyclones a spot in a post season bowl game.
