Re: UNF Ospreys Football: The Newest Addition to the Sunshine State
Been working for a few days so I haven't checked in. Great first win Beast! I was surprised to see Jenkins let go so quick regarding the allegations. The school must believe there's some truth to it. I hate seeing a coach gone mid season as it can create a huge funk, but I can see why it happened in this case. It was more damaging to the team to keep him.
Best of luck against UConn!
And I played the UConn game, will have it out later! My school got cancelled today so hopefully I can play a few games.
Rough going these days, man. At least UConn should give you a fighting chance. They're probably not much better than you are, talent-wise. I'd probably roll with Deshawn Harris going forward. He seems to give you a better chance to win. Poinsette seems too conservative to me.
I've never seen a WR have 19 pancake blocks before. That's ridiculous.
And you are definitely right with Harris over Poinsette, its funny because Poinsette is rated like 10-15 points higher tho lol... he's just so timid, always throwing stupid dumb passes to the halfback. Harris has his good moments, and seems more confident, but has major flaws with his accuracy. An upside with him is that I've also noticed he's a lot better with moving around in the pocket, avoiding sacks and what not. Edit: But I still decided to start Poinsette, not much regret with the decision either
UConn is rated higher than us, probably about 20 overall points, but their system is horrible so that evens things out... about the pancakes, that 19 is a season high but we've consistently been giving up +8 by individuals every game.. I may leave them out from time to time to only include linemen.
Thanks for the comments! Much appreciatedLast edited by beast10; 02-24-2016, 01:37 PM.Comment

UNF Tops UConn, 27-14
Oct. 25, 2016
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — North Florida (2-6) defeated winless UConn Saturday, coming away with the second home win of the year and for many players, the first win in the Osprey uniform.
Dating back to two weeks ago, UNF tacked on its program’s first victory in an upset over then-undefeated North Texas. This, however, was a game that 13 starters chose to not partake in. Today all but one starter suited up as the Ospreys knocked off UConn in a 27-14 win.
Brandon McNamara, Jarrett Gaines and tailback Danny Farris took in scores to help the Ospreys earn a victory for interim coach Kennard Robinson in his debut game at the EverBank Field.
“These guys want to prove to everybody who they are,” Robinson said. “When we play together like we did tonight, it translates to wins. Playing against all those ranked opponents has really put us in a better position to excel against our actual level of competition.”
Caleb Poinsette, who returned to the starting quarterback spot, threw for a career high 274 yards and a touchdown in the win. Brandon McNamara also negated a record, becoming the first UNF receiver to record a +100 yard receiving outing as he totaled eight catches for 103 yards.
The Ospreys were outstanding in their first appearance at the venerable stadium since an embarrassing shutout loss to Ole Miss and the subsequent resigning of coach Brian Jenkins.
“It’s been tough, few different morals from here and there but (Robinson) had kept us together,” Poinsette said. “Today was a great win, but that’s what we were expecting.”
Gaines, UNF’s dynamic senior linebacker, led a fine defensive performance by picking off a Tim Boyle throw and returning it 21 yards for a touchdown with 5:04 before halftime. Just 0:17 seconds beforehand, Poinsette linked with McNamara in the end zone, running away with a 17-0 lead following Gaines’ pick-six.
“We haven’t gotten too many chances to play at home this season,” Gaines said. “When we’re here, we’re at our best. Anytime a big play happens, everybody feels it.”
North Florida led the game 24-0 at halftime, their largest scoring margin since Louisiana Tech where the Ospreys led 20-7 before falling 42-41 behind a returned fumble within the final minute of play.
“I made sure to mention (Louisiana Tech) at the half,” Robinson said. “We aren’t accustomed to winning, so whenever we get a lead, we tend to loosen up. Today we did it again. Luckily our defense came through for us.”
While Tim Boyle threw his second interception to open the second half, UConn also inexplicably failed to establish its running game against North Florida, which had been bullied up front this season. Starting tailback Ron Johnson found himself injured early on and would not return until the fourth, his precede Arkeem Newsome had just seven carries for 18 yards. On one of his two carries, Josh Marriner relieved the offense and posted the first UConn touchdown late in the third quarter.
Boyle tossed his game’s lone touchdown in the opening minutes of the fourth, taking advantage of blown UNF coverage to find a wide open Derrick Smith in stride for a 29-yard score. A successful two-point conversion brought the game within a single possession at 21-14.
The Ospreys’ defensive unit continued to shine in the fourth quarter, coming up with a big fourth down stop following Poinsette’s interception that gave the Huskies the ball in their own territory. UConn attempted four additional fourth down conversions in the quarter, North Florida shutting each one down to come away with the 27-14 win.
“We didn’t capitalize when we needed to,” said second-year UConn coach Bob Diaco. “Give (North Florida) credit, they brought out a very stingy defense. You could tell they wanted the win more than we did. It’s tough, but we have to move on.”
The Ospreys, who improved to 2-1 at EverBank Field, totaled 335 yards of offense in a game where they were seemingly bound to reach the 400s. UConn dropped to 0-7 in a season that may cost Diaco his job in January.
Notes:
• Third straight game with an interception
• Second game with halftime lead
• Most passing yards in a game (274)
• First +100 yard receiving effort (Brandon McNamara), 108
• Second home win of the season
• First win for Kennard Robinson
• First score by a true halfback (Danny Farris)
• Second pick-six of the season
Injury Report:
Antoine Bowers left game with abdominal strain during the third quarter. Brice Hoyte and Myles Flanagan return next week against Kent State.
UConn entered the game without three starters and also lost Ron Johnson for two quarters with a knee bruise.

Gaines Named Independents Defensive POTY
Oct. 27, 2016
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The FBS Independents office announced Monday that North Floriida University senior middle linebacker Jarrett Gaines has been named the Defensive Player of the Week. Gaines earned the honor after playing a key role in UFN's stroll over Connecticut last Saturday that ended in a 27-14 victory.
Gaines caused a big shift in momentum when he came up with a 21-yard pick-six touchdown to increase the Ospreys' lead to 17-0 before halftime. The interception was his first on the year, Gaines also added eight tackles including two for a loss.
A senior, Gaines is the third UNF player to earn Independents Player of the Week honors this season and is the second Osprey to be named Defensive Player of the Week, joining fellow linebacker Jerod Hearn who Gaines also played with at Bethune-Cooman.
Gaines and the Ospreys play at home for the second straight week this Saturday where they will host Kent State. The game kicks off at 6p.m.

Myles Flanagan to Return Against Kent State
Oct. 27, 2016
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — North Florida's true freshman halfback Myles Flanagan will reportedly play on Saturday against Kent State after sitting out for eight straight weeks after breaking his ribs in the Ospreys' week one debut against Texas A&M, trainers announced.
Flanagan was the opening day starter at halfback, winning the position over Antoine Bowers who came in as the higher rated recruit last fall. Despite rushing for only 36 yards on 15 carries against TAMU, Flanagan's return is surrounded with anticipation after multiple sources close to the freshman praised the headway of his rehab.
“He’s bigger, stronger, faster, the list goes on,” said UNF coach Kennard Robinson. “I’m proud of how serious he took this process. Flanagan is a hard worker.”
Flanagan, who stepped on campus at 200-pounds running a 4.68, is now reportedly at 210 and according to a hand timed stopwatch, runs a 4.4 flat, shown on an Instagram video. The halfback will rejoin the Ospreys' offense that has since named a new head coach after the resigning of Brian Jenkins two weeks ago. Robinson has shown a similar offense in his two games at helm, however, against UConn the pass was the clear-cut go to.
Either way, getting Flanagan back should be a big boost for North Florida's run game, which has been the biggest underachieving unit in the nation through 2016. It is unknown if he will return to the starting lineup.

Game 9: Sat., Nov. 1 • 6:30pm
EverBank Field (67,164)
Jacksonville, Fla.
TV: N/A
Starting Lineups
* Color 'red' denotes lineup change for this week, for opponents it denotes a backup filling in for an injured starter
Need to Know
• UNF is 2-1 at home this season
• Kent State is 5-3, winning four of their last five games
• UNF is 2-1 in the past three weeks after starting the season 0-5
• Kent State is leading the Mid-American Conference in total yardage with 4008, placing 27th in the NCAA
• Myles Flanagan is listed as probable after sitting out for eight weeks with injury, the status also goes for CB/WR Brice Hoyte
• Kent State halfback Nick Holley has ran for 1062 yards on the year, which is the fourth most in the FBS
• UNF is last place in the nation when it comes to offensive red zone %
Stories
Caleb Football!: Caleb Poinsette threw for 274 yards last week, setting a first-year record for UNF. The freshman quarterback also broke the 1,000 yard barrier, totaling 1183 coming into week 10. Currently, Poinsette is passing on average 169 yards per game on a clip of 59%.
Halfback Situation: Myles Flanagan will reportedly get the starting nod against Kent State. Bowers slips on the depth chart with former redshirt Danny Farris assuming the backup role. Last week Farris added to his resume, scoring the first touchdown by a true halfback. Previously Farris became the first UNF halfback to rush for over 100 yards, a record setting event that came in his first game. Henry McNamara, a hybrid, hasn't taken a carry since the Clemson game.
Offensive Potential: When not faced against a ranked opponent this season (4 games), the Ospreys have averaged 339.2 yards of offense and 26.7 points per game. North Florida ends their 2016 campaign with five consecutive non-ranked opponents.
Visitor Canceled: Derrick Martin, a three-star tight end, decided to cancel his official visit to North Florida this week. The Deltone, Fla. product has closed in on Miami where he is likely to commit to over Florida State.
Freshmen...: UNF houses 33 freshmen, 15 being acclaimed starters. With the postseason quickly approaching, it may not be wishful-thinking for one or two of them to wind up on the NCAA Freshman All-American Team. Top candidates: Lukas Stephens, OLB., Willie Jones, CB.

Re: UNF Ospreys Football: The Newest Addition to the Sunshine State
Yeah I noticed how good we're doing against the non-ranked opponents, see the story in the game preview. We're averaging 339.2 yards of offense and 26.7 points per game! Poinsette is inconsistent, but I'm hoping maybe that could've been his breakout game... even more I'm hoping Flanagan can bring our ground game to life. Robinson is definitely making his stand to return next year as head coach. Thanks for the comment!Comment

UNF Drops 17-14 Decision to Kent State
Nov. 1, 2016
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — When not faced against ranked completion, North Florida puts on display the type of the football program they could very well become in the upcoming years.
The Ospreys’ roster that contains 33 freshmen, 16 of them starters, has slowly but surely gotten themselves off the ground. A team that was once a deep bottom-feeder amongst many statistics has flipped the script, desperately looking to make a push as the season comes to a close.
Although they failed to post a win today, UNF stayed competitive with Kent State (6-3), losing by a second quarter field goal that the Golden Flashes held on to until the end, leaving Jacksonville with a 17-14 victory. UNF, who started the season 0-5, had a foreseeable chance of hauling in their second straight win on Saturday.
“Skill wise, every week we’ve gotten better and that goes without saying,” said UNF coach Kennard Robinson. “We have a chance to become a very good team. It’s just been all about pulling the strings together at this point.”
In Robinson’s third game with the interim label, the offense amounted for over 300 yards of offense for the second time. Saturday’s 312-total came in a more convincing fashion as the Ospreys found rare success on the ground with the return of running back Myles Flanagan. The true freshman who suited up for the first time since week two finished with 81 yards on 17 carries, numbers coming despite a down second half running the ball.
“It was good to be back out there,” Flanagan said. “I’ve watched us struggle on the ground for two months now, and I couldn’t do (anything) about it.”
While the run proved to be successful, amounting for 141 yards, the passing attack had taken the backseat after recording 274 yards last week against UConn. Caleb Poinsette threw two interceptions, both to Kent State cornerback Nick Cuthbert, one that was returned 31 yards for the game’s first score.
The quarterback was protected by an offensive line that for the first time all season didn’t let up a sack. Still, Poinsette was ill-advised, often throwing off one foot including a dangerous heave to Henry McNamara that lucked out as a touchdown throw as the wide receiver hurdled into the end zone for the opening score of the second quarter.
“I’m still learning, each week there’s something I can pick up on,” Poinsette said. “But I’ve heard it a lot; I need to become more consistent. It’s just a matter of patience and adapting to this level of play. It’ll come.”
Kent State’s Colin Reardon added a 9-yard scramble for a touchdown while UNF’s Antoine Bowers followed up with his lone carry that was turned in as a 3-yard score, his first touchdown at the collegiate level after starting four games this season.
The scores kept the game tied at 14-14 before the Golden Flashes reluctantly elected to go for a fake punt with 1:04 remaining in the half. Adam Steward caught the defense off-guard with an 8-yard pass that returned the offense to the field who continued a prolonged drive that ended with a 25-yard field goal, the game’s final score.
“It was hard-fought out there,” Robinson said. “Each team’s defense definitely showed up to play, our offense had some patches, obviously, but the defense was there.”
The second half proved to be plagued with spoiled offensive drives, especially for UNF who failed multiple times to consistently move the ball. On defense, the Ospreys prospered on many goal-line stands, holding Kent State to just two scores out of their seven trips to the red zone on the day.
Strong safety Keenan Lever came up with two of the fourth down stops, one at the 2-yard line and the other at the one. Lukas Stephens, a freshman All-American candidate, paced the defense with 10 tackles while defensive end Ronnie Hurd tallied his fifth sack on the season.
Kent State eventually found a cushion within the UNF unit as time wore down. Nick Holley, who finished with 117 yards, was able to move the chains and Colin Reardon finished the deal with a knee as the Golden Flashes’ carried out their second straight win to claim bowl eligibility.
“That was type of game I can’t be upset about,” UNF’s Robinson said. “We played hard and stuck with it until the end. Two greatly prepared teams took the field today. We’re going to hit film study, learn, and move on to next week.”
Notes:
• Second straight game with +300 yards of offense
• First game in three weeks with over 100 rushing yards (North Texas)
• Return of Myles Flanagan
• First game with two interceptions (I think)
• Second straight game Henry McNamara scores touchdown
• Third game decided by three points or less
Injury Report:
Receiver Trumaine Tyson left the game for only two series before returning after a minor shoulder injury. UNF returned both Brice Hoyte and Myles Flanagan after each players had been listed as probable.
Kent State entered the game without four starters.

Michigan Stuns Michigan St.- Uranked Michigan's 42-17 upset of Michigan State raises some eyebrows around the league. Four of Morris' ten completions were touchdowns while Derrick Green added 146 yards and two scores on the ground.

Backstory: Henderson is an interesting case. He didn't play a down of high school football because he was a late bloomer and was undersized to play QB, but a YouTube video of him throwing the football at plants in the park caught some scouts' eyes. Still, he's not a very heralded recruit. He has a noodle arm, only being able to throw 30 yards on a good day, and while his accuracy can make up for that, he's not pinpoint accurate all the time either and he needs to put on about another 40 pounds of muscle.
Btw, I've been following this silently so far and this is really good! Hopefully my recruit being a 1 star means he can be recruited by you lol, but anyways good luck on the rest of the year and turning this program around.Comment

UNF Adds Second Recruit from Palm Bay
Nov. 3, 2016
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — North Florida University received its seventh Class of 2017 verbal commitment, Monday, following the Twitter announcement of Zhi’Heem “Bubba” Pinckney’s decision to play for the Ospreys next fall.
Pinckney, a 6-foot, 213-pound outside linebacker, is the second player from Palm Bay High School (Palm Bay, Fla.) to commit to UNF. The two-star recruit will join current teammate Isaiah Givens, a tight end, next season after Givens handed North Florida its first commitment of the season last month.
In addition, Pinckney will also reunite with UNF transfers Tomell One and Jeremy Faulk who were both at Palm Bay during his freshman year.
“(Palm Bay) is a powerhouse,” said UNF coach Kennard Robinson. “They produce division-one talent year in and year out. We’ve made it a goal for ourselves to make the school somewhat of a pipeline.”
The linebacker was only lightly recruited at the FBS level, North Florida being his only scholarship. Pinckney received minor interest from Florida, Miami and Tulane, per Rivals.com.
