    Cowboy Crootin'

After securing ATH/QB/S/LB Cliff Gross' commitment, Coach Bohl went on a bit of a gem spree. The coach received a trio of commitments from gem recruits. Coach Bohl reeled in 3* #27 OG Bryan Thornton (78 OVR, +8 gem), 3* #46 FS Clay Singleton (72 OVR, +8 gem), and 3* #39 OLB Chris McCoy (76 OVR, +5 gem)

Thornton was a big get for a few reasons. One, 78-OVR freshman offensive linemen don't grow on trees. Two, he's an ideal build for offensive guard in a spread attack at 6'4" 286 lbs. Three, Coach Bohl continues to lock down the state of Utah--Wyoming beat off...wait, let me rephrase that...Wyoming topped Utah, Arizona State, and Nevada for the North Salt Lake product. Thornton has some really nice attributes for the position (85 STR, 90 ACC, 83 PBK, 83 RBK).

Singleton, a 5'11" 185-lb prospect from Colorado, was extra nice to pull right out from under the nose of rival Colorado State. He'll help ease the pain of losing sophomore All-American Noah Myers after he goes pro. Singleton isn't a physical monster, but has plenty of athleticism to excel at safety. And he's likely to lay some serious lumber (81 HPW).

McCoy might be the most intriguing of all three. Recruited as a LB, the 6'7" 236-pounder doesn't really fit any profile perfectly, but has the size of a hybrid DE/LB. And the ratings to match (80 SPD, 80 STR, 80 ACC, 86 TAK, 79 HPW, 79 HPW, 74 BSH). A Nebraska-native, the Pokes overcame a Kansas scholarship offer to land McCoy.

Although Wyoming's offense is doing just fine this season under the auspices of Scott Frost's spread offensive scheme, Coach Bohl can't help himself when it comes to recruiting massive man-planets for the offensive line. His latest prize is an interesting JUCO (Soph) from Alaska of all places.

Big Matt Moore, a 3* JUCO #90 OT, was offered by Air Force Academy of all places. Nah. This 6'7" 350-pounder is playing for me. As one might imagine, Moore is more of a run block type (81 RBK, 83 STR, 86 ACC) than a pass blocker (67 PBK, 56 SPD, 61 AGI). He may have to redshirt to ease his transition to the lower 48. It's for the best; it'll allow him to get his weight up a bit.

3* gem's like those guy's are how Boise State built their team in real life. Those are the type of kids you got to find and recruit when playing in the MWC. Good job.

        2023g6: #15 Wyoming @ New Mexico

New Mexico defenders resorted to the "Superman" in order to slow Wyoming's run game; it didn't work

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- In one of the least anticipated games all season, unbeaten Wyoming traveled to Albuquerque to face totally beaten New Mexico. The game was expected to become so lopsided between the #15-ranked Cowboys and the 74-OVR, winless Lobos that Vegas wasn't even taking bets on this game. Probably for the best as the sportsbooks would've lost their shirts even setting the line as low as -20 for Wyoming.

The only problem is someone forgot to tell New Mexico how they should've just rolled over in front of their home crowd. With a 67-OVR true freshman backup QB starting, a 249-lb fullback starting at RT due to injuries, and the 123rd best scoring offense in the nation (16.8 PPG), the Lobos proceeded to score points on each of their first three drives. An impressive 52-yard field goal by 89-OVR power kicker Matt Smith (SO), a 66-yard freshman connection between QB Antonio Crowell (FR) and WR Rashad Reid (FR), and a 32-yard strike from Crowell to tight end Brian Rutledge (JR) had UNM on top 17-14 for a spell. Written in this author's game notes: "WYO horrific pass defense as per usual." Indeed.

The Lobos would kick another field goal as time ran out in the first half to trail 28-20. New Mexico had 214 passing yards in the first half. With the starting QB out injured. With a fullback playing right tackle. They had been averaging 223.5 passing yards per game (35th), so they are certainly a pass-oriented team. That much was to be expected. The Lobo QB ended up having a truly special game: 19/26 (73%) for 395 yards (15.2 YPA) and three TDs against one INT (231.0 QB rating). That wasn't really expected.

But, what was also expected was a yeoman's job from Wyoming's offense. And, man, that offensive line simply bullied New Mexico. To the tune of 516 rushing yards and 14 pancake blocks vs zero sacks allowed. As if the Wyoming gameplan of 78 rushes and four passes even allowed an opportunity for QB Darrin Green (rSR) to be sacked. Even three of the four passes called were screen passes.

The Pokes set a Bohl-era record with the 516 rushing yards. And probably a school record as well. Wyoming had three rushers top 100 yards. The quarterback, Green, carried 21 times for 180 yards (8.5 YPC) and two TDs. Starting tailback Kelvin Mack Jr. (SR) pitched in 24 carries for 122 yards (5.0 YPC) and a TD. Even shifty, change-of-pace back Jamaal Harlow (rFR) rushed 15 times for 111 yards (7.4 YPC) with a pair of touchdowns. The other 18 carries went to a combination of HB Steven Foster (rJR), HB Justin Lee (JR), and WR Cedric Weaver (rJR) for 103 yards.

Improving to 6-0 and heading into the bye week, a lot of storylines emerge for Wyoming.

Will Darrin Green really make a run at the Heisman? He's been pretty unselfish so far and in doing so has dropped out of the top 5 only for teammate Kelvin Mack Jr. to place 4th in the running.

Is Wyoming's offense good enough to overcome the defense's penchant to keep taking it on the chin? A #1 scoring offense (47.4 PPG) only got better after scoring 52 in this one, but the defense gave up a lot of yards once again (100th in pass defense before this game) to a team that had no business getting that many. MLB Mario Roberson (rSO) left the game in the second half with an injury, but that's no excuse because they were getting torched all game. Is there a 55-50 loss waiting somewhere just around the corner? With tough outs Boise State, Idaho, and Hawai'i all upcoming?

        Stay tuned!

I gotta say, for a "totally beaten" team such as the Lobos, they sure did put up a good fight. Wasn't like the annual Oklahoma-Kansas matchup, that's for sure.

I look really hard at the measurables (40 time, bench, squat). I think that gives me a pretty good shot at unearthing gems. I am always looking for 425+ bench and 600+ squat players for the trenches when I can find them.

You know, it's more about playbook and style than talent in this game. I just figure that a pass happy/air raid team is going to chew me up no matter how bad they should be.

                2023g7: Utah State @ #8 Wyoming

Wyoming QB Darrin Green (#6) completes a long touchdown pass under some duress

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- A game that was billed as a rivalry game did not live up to the billing. Utah State is arguably Wyoming's 2nd most hated rival--there is even a name for the series: "Bridger's Battle." But, this one was nothing like Wyoming's exciting, narrow 28-24 win last year. This iteration was a total beating. To the tune of 51-9. Hardly worth discussing the finer points.

The Aggies failed to get into the end zone. They converted just one out of eleven 3rd down opportunities. They couldn't run the ball a lick, either. Starting HB Chris Clark (rJR) had just four carries, albeit for 46 yards (11.5 YPC). Most of that came on a single 40-yard rush. The other nine carries were accounted for by starting QB Carlos Williams (SR), for -17 yards with three sacks in the mix. Perhaps they could've given more carries to Clark? In Utah State's two trips to the red zone, they managed a single field goal.

Even though Utah State was an underdog and expected to lose, their coaching staff did them no favors. One play that sticks out was a four-yard out route into the boundary on 4th-and-8. The Aggies moved the ball somewhat between the 20's, but often came up empty when needing to make a big play.

Coach Bohl's team, on the other hand, made it look somewhat easy. Except for Darrin Green's (rSR) interception on the opening drive and a Frankie Sanchez (rJR) interception with the 2nd string offense in the game late, it's hard to find fault. Even Green's INT was a USER issue when this author pressed the incorrect passing icon. So, no fault to the star QB.

The Pokes also showed one of their more balanced offensive efforts. Instead of clobbering USU with a run-unbalanced plan like the carnage that befell New Mexico, WYO was ~55% run to 45% pass. Of the 602 yards of total offense, 316 came through the air and 286 on 50 rushes (5.7 YPC). Green was once again the man in the middle, gaining 365 all-purpose yards. He handed off 38 times to seven different teammates, with Heisman contender Kelvin Mack Jr. (SR) gaining 91 yards and two TDs on 17 runs (5.3 YPC).

A relatively easy contest coming off of the bye week did allow Wyoming to dig a bit deeper into new offensive coordinator Scott Frost's playbook. A pair of plays that worked particularly well in this game: (1) "PA Jet Wheelies" out of the Shotgun Wing Offset Weak formation and (2) "WR Screen" out of the Shotgun Twin TE Flex formation. On the former play, tight end Tristan Hardin (rJR) snuck out of his H-back position and wheeled around the right flank for a 17-yard touchdown catch. With the latter play, tight end Oliver Jackson (SO) went in motion, right-to-left across the formation, to become a lead blocker for WR Todd Bennett (rJR) who took the screen play 14 yards for a touchdown.

Boise State is up next. Not that anyone needs to be reminded of how close Wyoming-Boise State games usually end up being. Craig Bohl certainly does not.

                        2023g8: Boise State @ #4 Wyoming

Redshirt freshman WR Russell Thomas (#7) had a coming out party

LARAMIE, Wyo. -- Last year's 29-28 loss to Boise State was fresh on Coach Bohl's mind with his dominating team that hasn't had "that game" yet this season. Undefeated, #4-ranked Wyoming came into this game first in the nation in scoring (48.6 PPG) and is winning games, on average, by three touchdowns. Boise State has been the definition of mediocre this season.

In last year's game, #3-ranked and undefeated Wyoming went into Boise to play what turned out to be an intense thriller of a game. A game that included a Wyoming turnover on downs, a Darrin Green fumble inside the red zone, and a Bryce Merchant drop that turned into a Boise State toe-tap interception along the sideline. All in just the 4th quarter. Of a one-point loss.

In this year's iteration of the Wyoming-Boise State let's-see-who-will-represent-the-Mountain-Division annual grudge match, the Pokes once again came in riding high and with a lot to lose. And, at least for one half, the Broncos gave Coach Bohl's team all it cared for.

At first, Boise State's defensive line overwhelmed Wyoming's offensive line in a way that hasn't happened in a while. The box score rather bears this out; Wyoming's big uglies only recorded two pancakes all game. Boise State got out to a hot start in a host of other areas as well. Starting QB Marques Cole (rSR) was 8/8 at one point. Although he would tail off later and get knocked out of the game. The blocking, tackling, and coverage was all slanted toward BSU early on. Even Wyoming's QB started quite poorly, tossing a pair of uncharacteristic interceptions. All of this added up to an early 17-3 Boise State advantage. And a feeling of here we go again.

However, the home crowd rallied behind its undefeated team and the team rallied back into the game. Darrin Green (rSR) found Russell Thomas (rFR) in the corner of the end zone for a 16-yard TD pass--this was just one of about three amazing catches Thomas hauled in. Only ten seconds later, Wyoming tied the game as safety Jesse Taylor (rSR) got himself a pick-six. Taylor did well to turn his body around and keep his momentum in bounds on the play. Both teams would hit a field goal before halftime to make it 20-20 at the break.

And, then? Well, Boise State didn't really come to play in the second half and the Broncos put up a goose egg. Losing their starting QB to a badly bruised sternum didn't help, but they could only muster 115 yards in the 2nd half. They coughed up another turnover when LB Mario Roberson's (rSO) interception put the game on ice. The Pokes got a 38-yard field goal from Joe Bennett (SR) in the 3rd quarter and a seven-yard TD run from Steven Foster (rJR) in the 4th to provide the 30-20 margin.

Wyoming amassed 500 yards of offense with 262 on the ground and 238 through the air. Green wasn't great early in the game, and had a costly fumble at the goal line late that would've wrapped this game up with a pretty bow, but his overall stat line was decent. Green was 22/32 (68%) with one TD and two INTs while gaining 116 yards on 11 carries (10.5 YPC). Kelvin Mack Jr. (SR) probably didn't do his Heisman chances any favors with a modest 18 rushes for 89 yards (4.9 YPC) and five catches for just 15 yards. Screen passes did not work against the BSU front. At all. They sniffed them all out. The best example being a 4th down attempt where a single Bronco defender defeated a three-man blocking convoy for the tfl.

The eye-opening performance in this tilt came from one Russell Thomas. The redshirt freshman is one to watch, he is. Thomas was an unheralded, run-of-the-mill 3* from Gateway, CO. Just a 63 OVR, he hit a massive +11 in random progression that put him on the map as a 74-OVR true freshman. After his redshirt year, this carefully groomed wide receiver is now #3 on the depth chart and a 79 OVR. Most importantly, this cat is making plays. Thomas caught six balls for 101 yards and a TD. It was more the manner in which he caught them that was impressive. Case in point, his first catch involved a toe-tap in the back corner of the end zone to kick start Wyoming's comeback. Then, later on, he out-jumped a pair of Boise State defenders and high pointed the ball for a 38-yard catch. One another occasion, the QB made a relatively poor pass, which ticked off a Boise defender's hands, and caromed into Thomas' arms as he got both feet in bounds for another catch. The play mirrored Boise State's immaculate interception from last season, but in reverse. Rather fitting, wouldn't you say so? Rather.

I would agree with you. I've only gotten 2-3 4* recruits total in the 7 years of this dynasty. I've never really found the fact that I'm a better program builder than the cpu to be interesting, so I use house rules to even the playing field. So far, so good.
