Standouts:
- Chris Harper is a big body from Kansas State, who has a very large catch radius, and can make people miss in the open field. His measurables don't stand out, but his game tape speaks for itself.
- In my opinion, Jordan Hill & Jesse Williams were the best pickups in our team's draft. Williams probably would've gone in the first two rounds were it not for a late season knee injury. He has spectacular upper body strength, and it shows on the field. He also ran a 4.9 40-yard dash, which could mean he'd make a great 4-3 end. Hill is a high-motor guy, he's got a quick first step, and he never quits on a play.
- Luke Wilson is kinda interesting due to the fact that his Pro Day numbers would've put him in the Top 5 TE class, had he actually participated in the Scouting Combine. It's actually kinda strange he fell that far.
Three things to know going into training camp:
- Any WR whose last name isn't Harvin should be worried. With Harper's selection in the middle rounds, Pete Carroll & John Schneider have made it clear that they still consider WR a position to improve. That, and they are also well aware of all the money currently tied up at the position. In fact... don't be surprised if Sidney Rice gets cut this off-season.
- Jesse Williams WILL become the starter opposite Brandon Mebane, and Hill will challenge for Mebane's spot. Williams is the only tackle outside of Jonathan Hankins that fits Pete Carroll's mold for the three-technique: big, strong, and aggressive. Look for Williams to start, with Hill challenging for the two-technique spot.
- Brandon Browner, Zach Miller, Brandon Mebane, Sidney Rice, & Red Bryant might get cut this season or next season. If NFL statistics are any indication, the likelihood of a team's entire draft class panning out is very slim. But with that being said, Williams & Hill could arguably be seen as upgrades to the DT position, and Williams in particular could be a monster at DE. Wilson is, at the very least, gonna see some time as Miller's backup, as well as the opposite tight end in certain packages, but he's also athletic and skilled enough to challenge Miller for a starting job. Harper has enough upside to challenge Rice for the split end spot. Simon bullies opposing wideouts like Browner does.
This may seem like a bit of a reach from me, but I'm looking at this strictly from the money = production perspective, and right now, the two aren't exactly correlating in regards to the starters mentioned. Rice has only played one full season since coming to Seattle, and he hasn't exactly set the world on fire (in his defense, he was always one of the more reliable receivers on the team, and we never really threw the ball a lot until the Atlanta game). Mebane shows up every once in a while, but he tends to have long quiet stretches. Bryant had a down year last season (in HIS defense, he had a pretty nasty foot injury last season, but he was never a star when he was healthy anyways. With Williams drafted, his role as the anchor is very expendable now). Browner was suspended four games last year, albeit under very dubious circumstances. And Miller didn't show up until the Atlanta game last season (and in HIS defense, it was a very good game for him, and he played injured). All of those players, except for Browner, are making a considerable amount of money in each of their perspective contracts.
- Consider the lack of Tackle picks as a HUGE endorsement of Breno Giacomini. And in my opinion, he deserves it. Giacomini is a good right tackle, who could even be great, but only if he ever learns to cut back on penalties. That was his biggest problem last season. Other than that, there are no glaring weaknesses in his game.
