I keep a 2-iron convert hybrid in my bag. It's basically my 5 wood.

      Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

First round of the year in the bag. Shot a 58 on 9 holes. Yikes. I was happy with my ball striking, but my biggest issue, in my mind, was ball position at address. I just couldn't quite get the happy spot with my irons, and kept pushing everything right. I also got stuck in a bunker that was waterlogged, which cost me 4 shots.

I made one little fix toward the end of the round. I rotated my left hand around the club clockwise just a bit so I could see basically all of my knuckles. Made a big difference in my consistency. Gonna have to hit the range sometime this weekend and work at it some more.

Played 9 holes to see where my swing was at after my knee sprain and 3+ weeks of inactivity. Went about how I expected. I wasn't staying down and wasn't fully transferring weight, as I didn't fully trust the knee. On the 9th hole though it all came together and pared the hole for a nice finish and a round of 48.

Feel better about my round tomorrow though.

I just got out to the range for the first time this year. I wasn't able to get out at all last year due to various reasons, but i'm looking forward to that changing in the coming weeks. It took a few swings to get back into feeling comfortable with the Stack and Tilt swing, but I started sending out a few nice, straight drives. That felt good. The irons were hit and miss. I kept pushing everything right, which is probably just an issue with ball positioning, as I was getting some decent hits.

In all, for the first time at the range in lord knows how long, i'm pretty happy. Playing the first 9 holes of the year this Friday, so we'll see where the short games at as well.
Yes and no... The setup is close to SaT but I have morphed from it. It helped with maintaining a stable base but I just wasn't comfortable being able to shape shots that much.
I don't shape a lot but felt limited and really uncomfortable when I was working on that with a total SaT method.

SaT was VERY helpful though in planting in my head a stable base to build off of.

Yeah, the SaT method has given me a solid base to work around, even if I know i'm not doing it perfectly. I'm still topping too many balls, but the core mechanics of the swing help my stay more consistent than I ever was. The nice thing about the swing is, even after not playing for a year plus, I can pick it back up for the most part without much issue. Obviously I need to work on consistency, but the mechanics are easy to remember.

My issue is not swinging down through the ball. I'm coming up with my swing before making contact with the ball, resulting in less distance and more mis-hits. It's still hard after all these years trying to teach myself to swing down through the ball and not try to just scoop it off the grass. I usually over compensate and chunk the ball about 10 yards down the fairway.

Oh well. Back at it again soon.

Anyway spent a good two hours at the range today hitting my new clubs. I definitely need to buy some lead tape as these clubs are a bit lighter than my old VR Pro Combos. I compared the 8 iron from my Combo set to my blade set and the weight was night and day. So I ended up hitting about 75% of my shots in the heel.

Once I get the swing weights on my blades the same weight as my combo's I'll be good to go!

Oh and on a side note, I hit the 2 and 3 irons today. Holy.... I managed to hit the three iron decently then went to hit the 2 iron and just embarrassed myself lmao. Those two clubs make it so difficult to get the ball air born to a respectable height. Definitely not going into the bag anytime soon haha.
I bought the 3 iron with my set because if I didn't I knew I'd be pining for it, all these clubs are so beautiful that I still catch myself just looking at them. Currently the 3 iron isn't in the bag because I picked up a cobra hybrid that is just stupid easy to hit, and even that isn't in the bag right now because I'm playing 4 wedges, the Mizuno TP's with the nickel finish.

There's this guy I play with once in a while who if all goes to plan I will play in the finals of the club championship, he has tremendous swing speed and was hitting that VR pro 3 iron 240. I saw him a couple of weeks ago and he switched to the Titleist muscle backs and in the 3 and 4 iron he now has the big, fat muscle back titleist that still looks like a blade, just fatter, and this is a guy who hits everything ridiculously high too, he hits a 9 iron to the green I can walk halfway to the hole before it lands. So don't feel bad about not puring that 2 and 3 iron. Only a handful of guys on tour have a 2 iron anymore.

I have versatility with multiple wedges and hybrids and the 3 iron depending on what course I'm playing, that 3 iron is so sexy I'll probably use it when it gets more cold and windy here and I want to hit low, running stingers, just looking for a reason to put it back in the bag, it's just easier to hit these new hybrids, especially out of the rough.

I wish it was practical to have nothing but mp 69's irons in the bag, once you have nice blades in the bag, even the nicest Drivers, hybrids, wedges etc. look like junk next to them, enjoy your new blades, and be a little patient with them at first. Always a little growing pains with new irons.

If you find yourself swinging up on the ball, maybe move the ball a bit back in your stance?

I bought some lead tape yesterday to weigh down my irons. Once I got home from the range I took out my 8 iron from my combo set and compared it to my new 8 iron. I noticed the difference in weight right away. My old 8 iron and all of my irons for that matter felt a little heavier. That explained why I was hitting most of my shots in the heel. I just couldn't feel the club head during my swing without the weights.

I went to golftown yesterday and bought some of these lead tape strips. Each little strip adds two swing weights to your club. Put one on each and now my irons feel alot better. They felt the same weight as my old irons. Going to hit the course today to give them a go. Hopefully all goes well.

                    Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Had a bit of a rough day today. Played a shorter course than my usual, a par 67, and shot a 108. Just inconsistent all day. I think I've decided that I need to check my ego and stop using the driver. On the back 9, I started using he 3 wood off the tee and was much more consistent. I just need more time to work on the driver before I use that consistently.

Still need to work on getting used to my new putter as well. I was putting great on the practice green the other day, but nothing seemed to transfer to the course today. As usual, that short game is brutal on the final score!

I was only able to get 9 in yesterday because of rain and shot 47. If it wasn't for the rain it would have probably been a 43 or 44. I feel I definitely lost a few shots because of the rain.....I couldn't keep my grips dry.

I still need to improve my putting by a lot. If I can do that I should be able to shoot low 80s consistently

Playing one of the nicer courses here in South Jersey tomorrow. Scotland Run. First full 18 since the knee injury. Played a little par 3 course about a month ago, tomorrow is the real test.

Swinging the club actually isn't bad, and I'm still in a brace. What bothers me is walking around on the undulating terrain. I'm going to hold off as much as possible, but wondering how much pain medication will affect my game. Not that it could possibly make me worse, lol.

Built in and around an old sand quarry, Scotland Run Golf Club offers a distinctive blend of quarry and links-style holes.

Played the PB Dye Course here in Maryland yesterday. First 18 holes in 3+ weeks. It actually went pretty well from 100 yards and out. I am finally in tune with my R1. Hit a couple if massive drives, and my 3 wood off the tee was equally impressive. Solid game with my longer irons and hybrids. I lost all distance control with my wedges and short irons. Wedges have been a weakness of mine for a while. Didn't help that these greens were FAST.

I love the challenge of greens like this, (fast, undulating greens) but they kicked my ***. I had about 6 puts that just missed going in the hole only to run 6-10 feet past on down hill putts that I barely touched. They were also having a Golf Channel Amateur Tour event there, so they had some tricky pins too.

All in all it was a great round, and I had a blast with some good friends. Add to it that I had a living social deal for a free round, cart and bucket of balls and it was even better as the round didn't cost me a thing!

And to top it off I woke up this morning and found that I won an auction for the Never Compromise Robusto. Didn't need it, but after seeing the bid was only $75 set my Limit for $175 and won it for $153. Not bad for a $300 putter.

Went back to my normal course again and shot a 108. Changed it up this time and didn't use the driver once. Only used the 3 wood off the tee. I think overall it was a good decision. My fairway hits was the highest ever at 53%, along with a few other really solid shots that were just off the fairway. Still had some crap shots off the tee, but much more controllable than with the driver. But didn't really improve much on the final score, which tells me the rest of my game still needs lots of work. Putting still needs improvement. 2 putted half the time, but 3 putted the other 9 holes. Iron striking was inconsistent. I did hit my 3 hybrid relatively well most of the time, though.

Need to keep practicing to try and break 100. The last three rounds have been 106, 108, and 108. How long did it take you guys to break 100 when you first started? Curious to see what a "normal" or typical progression should look like.

I honestly don't even remember the first time I broke 100. I do remember working on my short game constantly. Golf is a game from 100 yards and in IMO. If you're not good from that range, you will always shoot high scores.

If I had to find one weakness in my game right now it would be chipping. I either always leave it well short forcing me to make a long par putt or I blade it and sent the ball racing past the hole. I shoot in the low to mid 80's and if I could work on my chipping and just remove a few more two putts from my card I could easily break 80.

Yeah I think I should go back onto the short par 3 course and use that to work on the short game some more.
