Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
And some idea of costs would be nice, too.
And is it necessary for a hack like me? I'd think it'd benefit a more polished swing/player more because their swings are consistent.GO 'HAWKS!

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
If you are just buying clubs w/o getting fitted, you are wasting money IMO. That is if you have any desire to really improve at the game. If you just want to hack it up with friends and have some drinks on the back 9, then its is less important.Moderator

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
This depends on how much you play and if you're serious about golf. Having improper lie angles and lengths can cause a lot of trouble for your golf game. I'm lucky enough to be able to play standard loft, length and lie so I don't need much adjusted. Others need major alterations to their clubs. Some need +1" in length and 2 degrees upright while others have their irons .5" shorter and 1 degrees upright. Measurements need to be taken and numerous swings need to be taken to get dialed in.Xbox LIVE GT: oALEXtheGREATo

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
My bag has gone from Callaway to Nike the last few years. Only non Nike clubs are my hybrid and my wedges. Those will probably be changed out next year.

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I'd like to think that I'm quite serious about golf and improving. I have been working pretty hard to get better, hitting the range 3-4 times a week and playing at least once or twice a week. Based on my obsession/addiction level, I really don't see this stopping anytime soon, haha. I think I'm making pretty quick progress and improving, but wondering if a fitting would help that. At what point is it a good idea to get fitted for clubs? I keep seeing that it's a good idea once you have a repeatable swing, but that sounds vague to me. What determines if it's repeatable?
Thanks for the thoughts so far guys, really appreciate it.
1) I hit the same spot on the ground constantly (divot always after ball contact, never before)
2) I hit the center of the club face say 7 times out of 10
Those are the two things I deem a repeatable swing. Once you can do that and you feel your current set needs to be changed, then you have to find a fitter. I know down in the U.S you can see a PGA professional to do a fitting but a reputable club fitter would do just fine. When I say find a reputable club fitter I mean it haha. Some fitters don't know anything and charge ridiculous amounts of money for seemingly nothing. If you're fitting doesn't even last a half hour, walk away.
Once you find someone to do a fitting session with you, they'll have you hit balls with such devices like Trackman or indoor simulators that give readings based on each swing. Ball speed, swing speed, attack angle, launch angle, etc are just a few readings that these devices give to help fit you to clubs. These devices also give visual feedback on screen that show ball flight and how much top/backspin/side spin you're putting on the ball.
I've done a few fitting sessions and they had me try numerous different club heads paired with different shafts and flexes. Tried out game improvement irons and players clubs first. Players clubs both suited my eye and I got better numbers with them so I began testing out those. I told them I preferred Nike so I ended up testing out the VR Pro Combos and VR Pro Blades. Tried numerous shafts (regular, stiff, X-Stiff) and found the stiff shafts gave me my preferred ball flight. Regular shafts ballooned too much and X-Stiff made the ball shoot out like a bullet. Swing speed also plays a factor in shaft selection.
My average swing speed with my irons is anywhere from 83-90MPH depending on the iron. A shaft that is too flexible will produce a shot that can go to the left (for a right handed golfer) and will cause the ball to fly too high in the air. A shaft that is too stiff can cause the ball to go right (for the right handed golfer) and cause the ball to shoot out low like you're playing a punch shot. Also feel off the club face will change because the shafts won't "load" properly giving you a feel of hitting the ball in the center of the face when in reality you're not.
I tried out shafts from both Projext X and the Dynamic Gold line. I ended up choosing the Dynamic Gold S300 shafts. Gave me the high but penetrating ball flight I wanted but didn't over spin the ball. I've always been a high spin player so these shafts brought the spin down but not too much to where my approach shots to greens became too difficult.
My first session lasted a few hours and I ended up getting paired up with the Nike VR Pro Combo irons with Dynamic Gold S300 shafts. I regretted the purchase a few months later because I was hitting it good with the blades but was afraid it wouldn't translate to the course. So knowing the ho in me, I went a purchased the Nike VR Pro blades I mentioned a page back. Same shaft and specs, just all blades instead of having blades in the PW-8 and cavity backs from the 7-4 iron.
All in all I would recommend anyone who is getting into golf to get fitted. Like I said before, playing with the wrong specs will hurt your game. Playing with the wrong lie angles will cause you to hit the ball left or right even though you're aligned square. Playing with shorter or longer clubs can cause shanks, topping of the ball and all sorts of other problems.Last edited by SinisterAlex; 07-23-2013, 06:25 PM.Xbox LIVE GT: oALEXtheGREATo

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Tried out the Method today.
Honestly, I left a little disappointed. As I stated before, I'm a big feel guy, and the feel of the Method was too "raw" for me. Felt very firm and didn't like the way it sort of clanked off the face.
Obviously I didn't get to use this outdoors, so I couldn't hit any long putts to see a difference, but from a 15-20 foot range, I still preferred the Scotty way more and actually found one that I think I'm going to jump on which is the California Del Mar. Probably going to pick one up here in the next couple weeks.Cubs | Bulls | Dolphins | 'Noles

I feel like I'm getting pretty close to what you describe as a repeatable swing. Just gotta keep refining a few things and get a bit more consistent, but I think I'm getting there. I'll try to check out a golf fitting soon after.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
So I broke down and bought that Cu$tom $cotty Cameron Monterrey 1.5.
I am officially a club ho too lol
So now I need to see my Studio Newport 2. Anyone interested? Thinking I'm going to list it on Ebay. See some are still going for $175 or better.Last edited by JODYE; 07-24-2013, 02:12 PM.Cubs | Bulls | Dolphins | 'Noles

I saw the most beautiful putter. The Never Compromise Connoisseur Robusto. Company is giving one to a guy who is retiring. It looks glorious.

I believe those are blade putters no?

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Got my Nike VR Pro Blades today. They're most of beautiful clubs I've ever owned...
For those wondering, the eBay listing had the two and three irons included. Probably won't bag them unless I'm feeling good but I'll definitely fool around with them at the range.Xbox LIVE GT: oALEXtheGREATo

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Those are sweet clubs Alex, but I'm partial to my new set of Mizuno MP 69's. They also helped me win my County Amateur today, but I don't like to brag.

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Anyway spent a good two hours at the range today hitting my new clubs. I definitely need to buy some lead tape as these clubs are a bit lighter than my old VR Pro Combos. I compared the 8 iron from my Combo set to my blade set and the weight was night and day. So I ended up hitting about 75% of my shots in the heel.
Once I get the swing weights on my blades the same weight as my combo's I'll be good to go!
Oh and on a side note, I hit the 2 and 3 irons today. Holy.... I managed to hit the three iron decently then went to hit the 2 iron and just embarrassed myself lmao. Those two clubs make it so difficult to get the ball air born to a respectable height. Definitely not going into the bag anytime soon haha.Xbox LIVE GT: oALEXtheGREATo
