    Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

So I tested my swing speed over the weekend and was coming in right around 100 with highest at 102 and alot around 98. I was trying to drive the nail and hit some good drives but after reading a bit and talking to a club pro, you really need to hit the driver on the upswing. Freaks like Dustin Johnson just smash the ball and drive the nail but for your average swing speed, it has to be hit on the upswing.

So I remembered the reverse K method. The one thing that I was missing was bumping the lead hip forward so you don't sway.

Anyway, shot my best round of the year this year, a 73. Could have been much lower, had a silly double when I toed a tee shot on a long par 3 and ended up in grove of trees. Missed a 3 foot birdie putt, had that double, and had a putt literally pop out of the hole in a 3 hole stretch. 14 pars, 2 birdies, 1 bogey one double. I had 1 drive down wind go 327 and another go 311. 614 yard par 5 was down wind a bit. I hit Driver, 7 iron, lob wedge into it. Used the 7 iron because my round was going well and there is a river on the right. To risky to pull out 3 wood.

You can see how different attack angles at the ball will change the driver distance.

Thanks, I just looked at the scorecard and realized I only had 26 putts (but I don't count putts when I use the putter from the fringe or fairway just short and I had a handful of those).

I wish we could get all the OSers in this thread out for a round together. It would be fun to meet everyone on the course.

Definitely....where was the round, by the way? If you're still on the banks of the ol' red cedar, it gets not better than Forrest Akers (as you well know).

              Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

I've played a lot this summer so far. A lot for me is maybe once a week if I'm lucky, but sometimes every other week. So, still not enough as I'd like, and not enough for steady improvement. However, that being said, In the last 3 years or so, I've gotten my scoring average down about 10 strokes a round. So, I can't complain about that. Still shooting higher than I'd like, and it's usually because I have two blow-up holes per round. It usually involves falling apart and taking a 6 on a par 3, or an 8 on a par 4. lol In hindsight though, I look back at my rounds and I'm able to say ok, on that bad hole, I know exactly where it went wrong. Then instead of playing smart golf, and getting myself out of trouble, I do something stupid and too aggressive and get into even more trouble. lol It's either that, or I just had a hole where I've made a mess around the green with my chipping game. That used to be the weakest part of my game, but I'm proud to say it's gotten a lot better after taking some tips from my friends dad who's usually part of my regular foursome.

That being said, I've never taken an actual lesson, so just been figuring it out as I've gone along, and having fun. I started golfing with a huge slice off the tee, and struggling to hit irons. Then I straightened out the driver beautifully, started hitting the irons decently. Then I got good clubs, got them extended for my height and stuff after a proper fitting. Now, my irons I hit very well and for the most part consistently on target and it's my driver that's all over the place to the right again. I've read so many things, watched so many videos, tried so many adjustments on my own, at the advice of others, and just nothing I do can straighten it out. I've been getting by this year by lining up way left, and hoping I have a wide enough fairway to let my slice work itself to the fairway, or the rightside. I can't for the life of me figure out how my hybrids and irons are solid, but my driver is just wild.

At the start of this season as the driver started off bad this year again, I said I was going to take a few lessons. Particularly to work on my driver off the tee, and lessons on chipping, pitching, and sand play. The finer part of golf that I think you just need to be taught properly. My fear has always been getting so messed up by changing things from lessons that my whole game falls apart. Given how my chipping has improved with help from my playing partners, I bit the bullet (sort of) last weekend after my round and asked the pro at the course to set up some lessons to work on my swing with my driver. I just need to set up the first one.

I've finally given in. Hopefully this helps and I can get back to getting along well with my driver off the tee. I couldn't take it anymore, many of my bad holes tend to start with a tee shot that's put me in trouble, so as hesitant as I am about it, I feel like this is the only way I'm going to keep shaving strokes off my score.

Only a couple things that cause a bad slice. You have to be taking the club back outside the ball. Additionally you think you are aiming away from the slice, but you are probably just opening your shoulders making the issue work. Or you have a very weak grip. The pro will straighten you right out. If you hit a straight ball before he will have you doing it again quickly.

Planes, trains, and automobiles! I liked that one when I used to have occasion to be out on that side of the state. I put so many balls into that water on the holes running along the lake toward the highway....

That's a great scorecard for that course, BTW. It's been a long time, but I recall that being a pretty darn tough track. The other one out that way I remember is the GVSU course, which is great but tough as well.

Yep you do remember that well. So now you see why I kept the 3 wood in the bag on the par 5s when I had that round going. Love that course although you do occasionally have to step away from a putt when the 747s are coming in low and hot 😀

That's what I assumed and was told by an employee at Golftown when I bought my M2 driver. After watching a lot of vids about it, I tried some things to help correct it, and had a good round shortly after where it was much improved, but that just fell apart right away.

I've just at this point overwhelmed myself trying so many different things on my own, or at the recommendation of others, that now it seems like I get to the tee box and cant get it out of my head. Nothing I'm doing there feels normal anymore, it's poor technique for sure, but I think it's also to the point it's in my head now too and I'm just not swinging comfortably and freely anymore either because I've got too many things going on.

Definitely been there. Might need to take a break from the course and put in some time at the range for a bit (I know, I hate doing that too....) just to get comfortable with your swing again. I usually find there's too much pressure on the course to be able to actually fix anything in any permanent way, and it's hard to build any confidence in swing changes on-course.

                          Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Been on a tear recently, 5 rounds under 85. The only thing to work on, is putting. Which is unheard of for my game. I'm usually a great putter. So it's great to know where my improvements are needed.

Full swing is just done without thinking now. Hands higher at address, right hand goes a bit more "underneath" the club for a stronger grip, take the club slightly outside, weight shift (even if it feels like a sway, it's not), then just strike the inside of the ball.

                          Some stats:

                          - Last month's average scoring was 79.0 , last year it was 84.0
                          - Par 3 - last month 3.5, last year was 3.8
                          - Par 4 - last month 4.7, last year 4.9
                          - Par 5 - last month 5.7, last year 5.8

Putting, now here is where I need to work...

                          - Last month putts per hole 1.9, last year 1.9
                          - Putts per GIR - last month 2.2, last year 2.1 **

                          Driving the ball

                          - Accuracy - last month 52.3%, last year 45.8%
                          - GIR - last month 38.4%, last year 31.2%

And lastly, the best improvement, and why my scores are dropping...Scrambling...

                          - Scrambling - last month 33.9%, last year 14.7% ****

                          Handicap went from a 15.2 to just now...a 13.9. Let's go!

Very nice! East sider here, Michigan as a whole is just a haven for good golf.

Officially outing season for me right now, so the handicap is stuck at 6.9 for time being. Usually get back to my own ball in early September.

Well I mean the steeper the attack angle, the more spin will be produced, which then you have to hit the ball lower so the ball flight doesn't balloon up. That's what the goal is high launch, low spin with everything.

Last year I was spinning my M2 at 2700-3000 rpms , so I wanted to launch it at like 11-12 degrees. This year I spin it at 2300-2400 with my new M1, so I needed to bring my launch up to 14-15 degrees to maximize my/gain carry. Spin dictates distance.

                                Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Jekyll/Hyde round yesterday. Kept everything nicely under control on the front for a 41, then fell completely apart on the back (51). Terrible. Although the back, I played better than my score, for whatever that's worth. Hit a lot of good shots that got a bit unlucky with bounces, and had at least 2 putts stop on the lip with 30% of the ball hanging over the hole.

Anyway, at least I played a good, controlled round of golf, as evidenced by the fact that I played the entire round with 1 ball. Which I don't actually think I've ever done....not that it's a goal of mine or anything, but just thought it was interesting.

EDIT: Also, the most interesting aspect of the round by far was that I played right in front of group that was Jerry Rice (+ 2 women).
