That is the absolute worst. Some people can fall back on some 'emergency' mechanics to at least grind their way through, but when the wheels fall off the wagon for me, there's no getting them back on and there's no spare...

Looking to get back into golf after years of not playing. Should I just buy a beginners set?

        Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

I joined a private course on Wednesday, finally was able to play today. I have played it a before about 6 times so its not new to me but around hole 9 I was just looking around and it hit me that I was playing on a really nice course and its now my home course.

As far as my play goes, I bought new wedges (lob and sand wedge) and a new putter so my play close to the pin was not great but I could feel myself getting more comfortable as the round went on. I shot in the mid 90's so it certainly wasn't my best round but I enjoyed myself more than I have in awhile.

IMO no. There's plenty of good sales for good irons that would also include a fitting. That's my take...

          In other news:
I don't really need anything golf related. No reason what so ever to buy anything...
I just have a habit of wanting to buy new stuff now and again.

Anyways I've always liked the look of the Mizuno JPX-EZ irons...
          Spoiler

Well.. Dicks had them on sale (probably still are) marked down to 271. In store they were on sale for 571'ish.
So.... I caved and bought them.
Showed them the online price and they adjusted them.

Almost same shaft as what I play now with the difference being these were 95G and I play 90G (S300). And the lengths were 1/4 inch shorter

So basically I'll have a set I'll take on trips (the JPX's) and my AP1's will be what I play 90% of the time.

Might get lucky and find some Nike vapor irons since they don't make me Nike irons anymore.

In my opinion, I think you go out and get any set of clubs for whatever you feel is a reasonable amount of money, and then if you find yourself really getting back into it, you can escalate from there (or not). Modern clubs are all really good and I think you can't go wrong; whatever your budget is, you can find something in that range that will work just fine.

If you're willing to consider used, you can get some really nice clubs for very reasonable. Just get them re-gripped for a few bucks per club and you're good to go.

Nice work! I wish I knew about that deal...it's a steal. I would have pulled the trigger for sure.

You're right. That is a hell of a deal. I have been playing the 2014 Mizuno JPX EZ Forged for the last two years. They are 10 times better than the Taylormade Burner 2.0s I had before that. I got them beginning of last year for $300!

Anybody got a link to some insightful putting tips? I've got the old Dave Pelz book sitting on the bookshelf, but that thing is not the easiest read haha.

Feel like I've got a great stroke (cross hand grip), and I've been 2 putting like crazy, but if I could just hit 2-4 more putts a round I think I can get myself pretty close to scratch. My season GIR is now up to 56.6%, putting avg is 33.6

Unfortunately, I've never come across a good putting tip/guide that I can recommend. None of that works for me. I think it's because putting is so personal and individualized, there's no good way to come up with generic advice that 'works' for even a majority of people.

Other than spending a lot of time on the practice green...and let's face it, who wants to do that?...I can't think of any other way to really improve with the flat stick.

There are some good videos on YouTube, I wanted the Phil Mickekson short hsme video and that has helped me. Ultimately it's learning the little tricks and just spending hours practicing. I have been working on my chipping but I still have a ways go to before I can really feel comfortable chipping and then one putting.

Tomorrow I'm playing in the most fun tournament of the year, The Raw. It's a 27-hole 3-man scramble that my home course puts on towards the end of the season every year. Greens are cut to pro speeds. Pins are put in impossible spots like 1 foot from the edge of the green behind a bunker or on a severe slope. The par 3s all have a quirk - e.g. you have to hit your tee shot with a children's club. There are loudspeakers set up around the course blasting metal, punk, and hard rock. It'll take around 8 or 9 hours with a lunch break, but the weather is supposed to be perfect and the drinks will be flowing early. Last I heard there were about 40 teams signed up. It's gonna be a blast.

Supposed to be in mid-50's this weekend, think I'm going to try and play 9.
