I played a course for the second time today. This first time I played it was in April and I shot a pretty bad 132. Today went out there and shot a 113, and didn't feel like I hit well until the very end. I realized I had been setting up with my feet too far apart, and was hitting shots fat and low all day. All of my shots from about 80 yards in were going great, and I noticed my feet were much closer together on those. On 16 or 17, I narrowed my stance a little and nailed a shout with my hybrid, and hit a great shot. Hit the ball pretty well after that, with some bad luck (like a super-ball bounce into some high grass that I had to chop out of). But I hit it better than I have lately. It was nice to figure out why I've been having so much trouble with my mid-irons lately.

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Anyone have any good stories or memories of their first round of golf? I'm thinking I might get one or two more driving range sessions in and then venture out for my first real round.
Also, I'm looking for pointers as far as what to bring, basic mistakes to avoid, etc. I'm such a newb at this.
As far as my first round, it was pretty forgettable. I started playing golf when I was like 13. Being around it I had enough natural ability to look like I knew what I was doing, but the round was pretty forgettable lol I don't remember what I shot or where I played. Needless to say, I've gotten A LOT better since then.Comment

As for what to bring/avoid etc., be sure to bring something to eat and drink. Even if you're in a cart, it's probably going to take you more than 4 hours to play the round, so you're bound to get hungry and thirsty.
Avoid getting angry. I'm sure you know this, but your first time out will likely be pretty bad. Enjoy the good shots when you hit them and laugh at all the others. It'll make the round much more enjoyable for you.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Good advice here. As someone who has only played twice, this is the exact approach I have been taking. Of course I know next to nothing, and it's not like I'm trying to make the PGA tour or anything. I'm just having fun learning the game and enjoying the experience.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Played this morning and had an extremely frustrating round. Started off with a birdie after a great 3 iron off the tee, then a solid 9 iron to within 15 feet. Nailed the putt. Then went double, bogey, bogey, triple, double, before parring 8 and 9. Another birdie on 10, then triple, bogey, double, bogey, bogey, bogey, birdie, par. Shot 90 but couldn't find any kind of consistency aside from the tee box. I think I'm going to look into a lesson to figure out what is going on with my irons as I haven't been able to fix it myself for the last monthComment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Played last night. Currently going through some swing changes that are much needed so last night was a kind of gauge of where I'm at.
Started out, ripped at 5 wood about 275 to leave myself with a full shot into the green. Unfortunately misread the wind and left it about 60 feet short. The greens were being worked on and they were extra bumpy and I three putted, started out with a really bad bogey. Then followed with an awful par after I was pin high in two. Once again the greens were impossible to gauge.
Followed it up with another bogey on a short part four. Thinned a wedge and ended up over the green. Frustrating not being able to get up and down seeing that's one of my strong points. Then I make bogey on the next hole a par 3. Then the next hole is a decent downhill par 4. Striped a 4 wood to leave myself a wedge in. Threw a rod in there to about 3 feet. Tapped in for birdie. Made par on the next hole then coming back on a reachable par 4, laid up with a 5 iron to about 120 yards, and threw another wedge in there to 2 feet, actually lipped out of the hole on my approach and made another birdie. Parred in to shoot 1 over on the back.
Then to the front. Which was pretty uneventful. Went par, par, par, par for the first four. Then got risky on a reachable downhill par 4 and put it in the trees right and made bogey. Followed up on the next hole, a LONG Par 5, almost 600 yards and made a great birdie. Went 5 iron, 3 wood, pitching wedge to 20 feet and drained the putt. Then another par on the next hole. Then came to 8, a 165 yard par 3. Hit 9 iron to about 7 feet and made the put to go 1 under and then parred number 9 to shoot even for the round.
Overall, I'm happy with my performance. I don't like to make excuses but the greens definitely cost me a few shots seeing you really had no idea where the ball was going to go.
As far as my swing is concerned, if I had to compare a player that I'm trying to model after it, it's Anthony Kim. My biggest problem is I don't get a full extension and rotation and sometimes come far too inside, so I've been studying his swing and trying to model mine after it. Been working on some drills and working on really going down and getting after the ball. Last night, I could see some signs of improvement, but also had a couple lapses in judgement. I know this change is going to take some time, but I've been working on the range diligently to get it figured out. I'm really trying to give this golf thing one last shot so I've been putting a lot of time in.Comment

First round of the year today. It's gonna be awful. Have not swing a club since the last week of winter.

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Shot my lowest round so far. It's only my 5th round of golf ever (full 18) and I shot a 114. I would've been in into the lower 100s if I didn't absolutely FALL APART on back to back par 3s and get 8s on both. I finished with three bogeys in a row(par 4, par 4 and par 5) to redeem myself.
My worst part three to that point was a 5....had I just held it together, I'd have shot a 108. Which isn't great, but I would've been pretty happy....
Nice day out....The line must be drawn HERE! This far, no further!Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Glad I got the first round out of the way. It was pretty horrible. Off the first tee slice. And from there the next 7 holes where me going bing, bang, boom all over the place. Got to hole 8 which was a par 3 my range finder put it at 148 yards it was sligtly up hill, hit a 7-iron to 12 feet and three put the par. Hole 9 is a par 4. I top my driver a bit and am about 230 yards away from the green. I hit what may have been my best shot of the round a 215 yard 3 wood to put me on the green but with a long put for birdie. I hit a beautiful lag putt from about 30 feet that comes within 3 inches of going in and I finish with another par.
Back 9 was a little better, I flew the green on a 194 yard par three with a 4 iron. (My distances are all screwed up right now) I also was horrible inside 100 yards. It was more the rust than anything else I would hit one solid shot per hole on most holes, but I couldn't put anything together. Last three holes I found my putting stroke as I one putted each of them, from 5, 12 and about 15 feet each with a little break to them. Finished up at 111 after a 61 on the front 9.
It felt so good to be out there, after basically not being able to all spring and summer, still need to get to the range and get my swing back and my distances, accurate again. I hope I can get out there again sooner than later.Last edited by N51_rob; 08-13-2011, 01:44 PM.Moderator

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Shot 57 9 holes today. I had 21 putts, having accidently brought a putter I had retired since it had broke, and after my repair job, it doesn't hit the ball well. Frustrated, I went back out and played a 2nd 9 about an hour later. Shot a 48. Much better. 105 for the day isn't bad at all at this point for me. I really concentrated on a smooth swing for the 2nd 9, and it really worked wonders. I'm pretty good at pitching, so I just concentrated on having that exact same tempo, and my shots flew so much better. I think I would've done even better, but the slow play in front of me got really bad at the end and I was waiting 5+ minutes per shot, and that really threw me off.Comment

I hate having long waits between shots.

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
We won the scramble on Friday with an 11-under 60 by 2 shots. I used my gift certificate at the pro shop for this:

Next weekend's is for cash. I'll be the worst player on the team, so we should at least be in the mix.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Shot an 81 today, but should have been a lot better. Missed 4 putts inside 4 ft and shanked 3 chips in a row. My driver was terrible today as I had a nasty snap hook with it. Going to take a couple days off to do some work around the house and then back at her Thursday.Comment
