When you go to the range, hit off of grass and only swing about 50% at first so you can feel what it like to make solid contact. Most likely you are overswinging. once you feel what its like to consistantly make solid contact swing a little harder.

Right now, I am forward pressing my irons and only taking my back swing back about 80% and smashing down and through the ball, with that technique I am staying in balance and added about 20 yards to my irons. My sand wedge is going 110, 7 iron 170, 6 iron 185, 5 iron about 200, I have removed my 4 iron from my bag and have 4 wedges.

What do you guys do for iron practice when you can't hit off the grass. There's probably 3 driving ranges around here, and only one of them regularly lets you hit off of the grass, and that's only from about May or June until September. It's just too wet up here. I've always found that hitting off the mats hurts my irons more than anything else. I feel like it takes about 7 holes to fix whatever damage hitting off the mats causes.

I personally only hit off the grass. Had too many problems hitting off mats. Your club can bounce and still make good contact. It also makes you pick the ball and that leads to bad habits.

I guess I would get a shag bag and head to a park or something and practice wedges off the grass. I live in Michigan so the range is only open from May until September, but its grass only.

I'm going again tomorrow and I'll try this, I think I'll spend a little more time at the driving range to develop at least a little bit of form.

The golf fix this week had a segment on hitting off a mat. Problem is, it makes you sweep the ball vs. pinch the ball. If the mat makes a thudding sound vs. a sweeping sound, it won't translate well onto the course.

I've knocked my handicap down to 7.8 this summer (and it may go down a few tenths more when the new scores get put in). I haven't really done anything different other than get new grips for my irons and bought a new Titleist 910 D Driver. The Driver is great and I hit it much better than my old one so that has a little bit to do with it.

This is going to sound totally wrong, and it really is in a lot of ways. My Dad and I are self taught golfers, so we did (and still do) things that are unorthodox. One day when the range was really wet, my Dad unscrewed his coke lid and used that on the mat for a mini tee. He claims that it helped him to focus on brushing the ground rather than wacking at it. The range we use didn't care, but many probably will, and it's probably horrid advice, but that's what he did...

I've put in some time at the course in the past few weeks, and my handicap is going down. Part of the reason is that I bought a new putter. My old putter was thin and unbalanced. My new putter kinda looks like a space station at the end of the shaft, but it's helping me to keep my putts straight. I don't have all of my scores in, but it looks like it's going to drop my handicap from a 28 to about a 24 or less. I'm really sold on this new putter.

^^^Only problem with that is that its teaching you to scoop the ball instead of pinch the ball. You are losing alot of distance when you scoop the ball.

Slowly improving my game and really getting better accuracy.
                    Also....
I FINALLY solved my driver issues and have been hitting fairways consistantly now. 1: Not opening my driver face at takeaway and
2: getting the right distance from ball fixed me.
Seems like small things but they made a huge difference.

Hitting the course at 8am tomorrow for next round. I'm off work until Thursday so I hope to get a few rounds in before then.

Back to back 55s on the same 9 hole course. First time I was decent off the tee, but great from everywhere else. Today I was INSANE off the tee, but clunked a couple of shots that I don't normally have trouble with.

That makes THREE times that I've gone out and hit a 55 on the NOSE for nine....hey, at least I'm consistent!

Last time out I took a 9 on the first hole. I hit my 5 wood straight right twice, and then adjusted and bombed it straight - directly into the pond in front of the pin. After that I recovered pretty well bogeyed 3 of the next 4 holes and parred the other. Ended up with a 50. Hit the ball much better than I have lately.

Looks like I will be getting out each day for the next 2. Took some time off after the last round because I was getting really lazy and developing some bad habits so I figured a little time away my get my focus back. I have a tournament next weekend so I need to get my stuff figured out if I want to win some money.

I love this game but man if I could EVER pit everything together I would pass out.

After all this time getting my driver right, my irons were dead on. Today????
I blocked everything right. In the past 2 years my irons were my saving grace. Now I fix my driver and the irons leave. I mean they are dead right by 10-15 yards. I refused to start the "Aim left" to compensate, and struggled through the day.

Frustrating but I'll figure it out eventually....

The same exact thing happened to me a couple of months ago. I started smoking my driver (which I've always hit decent) 290+ down the middle after making a small adjustment with my right arm. All of a sudden, I lost my irons the same way as you.. blocking everything out right. I think the adjustment I made to my driver affected my irons because I'm closer to the ball.

One thing that helped me was making sure I wasn't collapsing my back side (mainly my right shoulder dipping). I think this was causing my hands to lead my clubhead too far and the clubface couldn't square up at contact. The ball flight was straight, but it was going 20-30 yards right most of the time. The last time I played I hit my irons much better as a result of attempting to fix this.

                                Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

My first time visiting this thread. Love it from what I've been reading.

Been golfing for 10 years now, and I'm a 13 handicap, with scores usually somewhere between 80 and 88, but my last outing was completely miserable. Shot a whopping 104, after a horrendous day with my irons. I've JUST started hitting my driver consistently 280+, straight down the middle every time. However, I was playing a course that I've only played twice in my life, and the fairway and rough grass is much thicker than I'm accustomed to, so I continued to hit the ball short on every approach shot, and it tacked on a shot or two per hole.
For some reason I was very hard headed about never going one club more than I would usually use from those distances. I just couldn't bring myself to doing it, as I was worried about hitting it well over. If I play that course again, I'll just have to make myself try that. I can't sleep at night knowing I shot that poorly.

It's funny, though. The guy I was playing with is someone that I've been friends with for several years, and we've probably golfed together 5 or 6 times (twice this past summer), and he ALWAYS seems to bring the worst out in my game. He's a little below average golfer, usually shooting between 105 and 115, and he usually does when we play together. But, for some reason, anytime I golf with the guy, I bring in 90+ on my scorecard.
Anyone have a logical explanation for this? Could it be that I'm having to wait longer between my shots for him to get up to where my ball is on every shot?
