    Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

Ended up shooting somewhere between 83-88 (didn't keep score, but that's what I would estimate) when I went Thursday.

Driving was great. Irons were awful (which has been the case the last 4 or 5 times I've gone). Chipping was average. Putting was average.

I really used most of the day to experiment with new things. I NEVER use my sand wedge anywhere but in the sand, but I decided to try chipping with it some around the green; bad idea. EVERYTHING was well short. On a positive note, the only shot I had to hit out of the sand, I almost made. The club works great out of bunkers; not so great out of rough. I think I'll just stick with my usual chipping approach - I use either a 7, 8, or 9 iron and try to run the ball, rather than take a direct shot at the hole with a wedge.

The biggest problem with putting was poor distance control. Everything was either way too hard or way too soft, which resulted in some tough second putts. But, I attribute this to trying to use a putter that I haven't used in a while. It's much heavier than the one I'm accustomed to, so I spent the entire day trying to get a feel for it. On a good note, I sank my last putt of the day - a 10 or 15 footer for par.

The biggest change I made was with my grip (on the last 5 holes).I was rubbing a blister on my left hand (top hand) index finger. I have NEVER interlocked my top hand's pointer finger with my bottom hand's pinky (as you're supposed to do). I've just never felt comfortable doing it. It's always felt awkward. Anyway, I decided to give it a go, to relieve some pressure on that finger, and I seemed to lose a bit of distance, but every shot was dead straight. My ball control seemed to improve quite a bit, with my driver, fairway woods, and irons. My distance control was thrown off a little, as I was losing 5 to 10 yards with every club. Not sure if this was a result of the grip, or, a more likely explanation, a result of me swinging a bit easier, to focus on keeping my club on a good line through my back swing.

Overall, it was a solid experience. I got to jump in with 2 older gentlemen to finish my last 3 holes, which I always enjoy doing. They have some great stories and fun banter.

I'll definitely continue to try to interlock my fingers, but as I said, it's quite uncomfortable for me.

Some of you who may have had some formal instruction (which I haven't), I want to know - is it important to interlock the fingers? do you gain anything from that, over not doing so?

      Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

I've considered interlocking my fingers too. I believe the idea is if you have smaller hands, interlock is best - and overlap for medium/large. Not sure where I saw this approach, but it makes sense.

I've been having trouble losing it at the top, so I'll try to work on the interlock to see if that helps keep the club more firm in my fingers.

Been itching to play since last weekend, but I got pretty sick. Hopefully I can sneak in a couple rounds this weekend - need to get prepared for the tour in April

Yeah, I've tried interlocking before (it's actually the grip I used starting out) but it never felt very good - though I have fairly large hands, so that probably has something to do with it.

Went out for the first time today...quit after 12 holes. Every good thing I had going for me last August is gone. I hit maybe one or two good shots and putted like a moron. I really want to hang up the golf shoes for good after today...or go on The Haney Project.

Took a "sick" day at work today and went golfing. Shot around an 87. Didn't keep score too closely but I felt good playing. My driving was pretty solid. I struggled a bit with my irons but my chipping/pitching was very good so that saved my round a bit. I probably won't be able to play again for a little while, but I had a great time today.

What problems did you have man? I hate that feeling - and I was there last month, but now - I finally have found my happy place and with a tweaking of the short game - I'll be in the low 60s soon.

It wasn't too bad. The greens looked like camouflage so they were really tough to read. My speed was pretty good and I actually made a 20ish foot breaker on the first hole, but I missed quite a few just off the edge and some others just complete misreads because I just didn't see the break

                      Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!

I've only ever played twice and it was just for fun. I never kept score, and never finished a full 18. We played twilight hours, and it would get dark before we could finish.

Well, I went out yesterday and played a full 18 and kept score for the first time ever. Of course I played like a total n00b, and scored a 156. I had 8 holes with 10+ strokes. There's was another guy playing solo right behind me so we ended up playing together, and he actually helped me out with a lot of coaching and tips. We ran into another solo, this guy was really helpful too, and the three of us finished the round together.

I took the tips they gave me, watched handful of videos online and went back again today. I'm still nowhere near good, but I was able to knock off 30 strokes from yesterday's round and shot a 126 today. Only 3 holes with 10+ strokes this time.

Hopefully it continues to get better from here, but I'm really enjoying just learning for now.

You guys are lucky. Normally it's warming up here in March, but it's going to be low 40's and rain tomorrow, and a snow/rain mix Sunday. Yay.

I ordered the C510 Irons (forged cavity backs) 4-PW, and then got a 52 gap and 56 SW in the forged Muscle back. I also am contemplating trying one of there milled putters just to see how they roll. Plus they threw in a golf bag because my order was over 300$.

Very nice man. Those C510s are beauties. Heck of a deal for just $300, those bags are sweet too - I'll probably be buying the white/red TRX very soon.

As for the putter, I've got the Heater III - and it feels identical to the Taylormade one. The head is heavy and keeps my stroke on point. I like the view from the top of the 3 lines that help me align my putts too.
