Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I've been thinking about why I've been able to avoid blowup holes this year. I've come up with a few things:
-- Focusing more on accuracy off the tee. I can hit the ball pretty far when I let the driver go, but it's really not worth it. If I can get the ball within 150 yards on a par 4 in the fairway, I'm in great shape. An extra 20 yards in this situation doesn't matter. Even on the longer par 4's, being 180 out in the fairway > being in the rough from 160 or bringing trouble into play. I'm leaving the driver in the bag much more often.
-- New irons. For the first time I'm playing with forged irons. I love it. Clean hits are more pure and I have much more spin into the green. If I miss-hit, it's going to be more short, but I'm not in greenside bunkers or short-siding myself. From there, I've gotten up and down a lot, but even if I don't, it's 2 putts for a bogey.
-- Focusing on a simple GIR. I'm not going to stick darts close for good looks at birdie all the time. I'm aiming for the fat part of the green when I need to, and making sure my "mistake" will either leave me in little trouble or close to the pin (if that makes sense).
-- Lagging long putts for an uphill second putt. It's much easier to firmly take the break out of a tester for par from here than facing a downhill breaker.
-- Tempo, tempo, tempo. My last thought before every half to full swing is "smooth". There is no need for anything to be rushed or violent about my swing.
This all might seem simple for the more advanced players here, but I think this can help some guys who are trying get some simple thoughts on how to lower their score.Comment

I'll definitely relate to you about the irons though. This last month I've put my favorite blades (mizzy mp33/mp30 combo) in the bag. My mi****s are deserved, and my "butter" shots are earned! I can't ask for a better teacher than that skinny little blade just daring me to hit one pure.
Didn't hurt that I started taking lessons from a PGA pro (who missed the cut on the senior pga tour last weekend by a couple strokes).
Good luck to those out there today. I hope weather cooperates, and we're closer to 54 in 18, than on 9Comment

I really like it. I putted very well yesterday and the pure roll insert just feels good. I haven't been playing golf that long so this was my first real putter as I'm just about finished upgrading from my first set of clubs (RAM starter set) so I definitely noticed a huge difference between the putters. Saved many strokes out there.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I need help on what to buy next. I had a starter set up clubs that were RAM brand. This is my second year playing golf now and I have recently upgraded just about everything slowly. My set up now is -
Taylormade RBZ Driver
Taylormade White Smoke Putter
Taylormade Burner Plus Irons (9-4) and PW and SW
Taylormade 3 Hybrid Rescue club
What should I invest in now. A good set of woods, 3 and 5 maybe or some wedges (lob and gap)? Woods will help obviously on par 5's and if I shank a tee shot. Currently I used the hybrid but its a very unreliable club for me as i either crush or it top it. My buddy let me use his 3 wood at the range and they were flying! Could definitely come in handy on the course.
The weakest part of my game is short little chips onto the green. I used his 52 degree wedge yesterday and it did feel better then just the standard PW and SW that came when I bought my irons. I was able to get under the ball easier and did hit better chips the times I used them.
So what should my next buy be to help continue to improve my game?Last edited by franch1se; 06-02-2012, 11:30 AM.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I do love my new driver. I believe they are going over 250-280 yards now, but I'm not sure. My brother isn't man enough to go down range to tell me where they are landing. I say this because we can't always see where they are landing. I lose them in the sky.
I'm using a 10.5 Nicklaus Dual Point. I hate how it sounds, but it goes far and straight.Comment

I got 1 of each. Picked up a Taylormade burner superfast 3-wood. I can launch that thing!! Also picked up a Cleveland 60* G16 wedge with zip grooves. Love it so far.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I use the Superfast 2.0 3W and Rescue.
I have the 60 Degree and 50 degree Cleveland wedges. LOVE them.
My setup:
Driver: TM Burner
3W: TM Superfast 2.0 (I can simply crush with this club)
Rescue (4) Superfast 2.0 (Another club I can launch)
Callaway X20 Irons
Cleveland 50 and 60 Wedges.(Wouldn't play without these. Especially the 60)
I still need a new putter but my non brand name works so far.Joshua:

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Love my TM 3-wood so i went back and picked up the same club in a 5-wood. I have room for 1 more club in my bag. What do you guys suggest?
I currently have
Driver
3W
5W
4i
5i
6i
7i
8i
9i
PW
SW
60* Wedge
Putter
I simply CANNOT hit a hybrid but I guess I could always learn at some point haha.
Note - I no longer have the TM Rescue club. Golf mart has a 90 full play money back guarantee and i returned it for the TM 3-Wood, Cleveland 60* lob wedge and some cash back.Comment

For example my PW is 45deg and my SW is a 55 deg. I already had the Cleveland 60 so I grabbed the Cleveland 50.
(I don't carry a 5W)
Other than that I'd say get a rescue/hybrid. I have one that is same distance as my 4I. Even though I can hit the 4I, there are certain times for me the hybrid makes the shot easier than the 4I. (Fairway bunker etc..)Joshua:

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I had my first really nice hybrid shot today. My 21* carried over the tree and went about 200 yards, about a foot from the green. I'm getting better each round. Drives are going further and straightening out. Irons are going straighter and getting lift.
The only problem I have are the shots about 5 to 10 yards from the green. I either hit it really soft and it doesn't reach, or I hit it too hard and it goes to the other side of the green.Comment

I always practice the short stuff every time I go to range.
I have the distances down pretty well and depending on green (do I need roll out or a quick checkup) and whether I have a bunker or anything else between me and the green, I'll use a PW or my 60 degree.Joshua:
