After shooting even par 71 last weekend, I've mustered up a 79 and 82 this week on the same course. Those dang mid range putts, and then all of a sudden my irons are hittin' the green....makes for a long day haha. Oh how I love golf..

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I have a question about golf balls. You guys see to play enough golf that you have developed the feel for the ball that everyone seems to develop after a while.
What I mean is, when I read reviews about certain brands and models of balls, people will say that this ball feels soft or the Rock Flites feel like you are hitting a bowling ball. I have never felt a difference between balls, although I have not played very many rounds either. Even when putting the ball around the house, I feel no difference.
On the other hand, I think I'm starting to develop this feeling. The only balls I have hit recently are driving range balls. My memory is telling me that they have felt "heavy". How do driving range balls usually "feel"?
When did you guys first get your feeling for the ball? Or is it all just a big fib these other golfers are trying to tell?Comment

I don't know your handicap, but I'd say most golfers start getting picky about their golf balls around a 10 handicap or so (and that's just based on experience and not any fact whatsoever haha).
Driving range balls will feel dead (or heavier) because obviously they're hit a lot and aren't in the greatest condition.
As a 20 something handicap, I avoid the "tour" balls (like Pro Vs and such) at all costs because those balls are designated for high swing speeds and golfers who can consistently make good contact. Whenever I play with a cheaper ball (like $20 Bridgestones) I feel the ball is much "softer" than when I use a tour quality golf ball.
tl;dr: I don't notice any difference in the cheaper golf balls, but they feel better to me than tour quality golf balls.Pittsburgh Penguins

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
For me it was when I started to spin the ball with my wedges. I was using Srixon Z-stars. Haven't looked back. I keep some Nike One's for putting but I putt equally well with either. I just got a silly good deal on those two years ago. $12/dozen so I bought 10 dozen. Then I found out I can spin and now shape the Z-Star's.

I used Z-Star this past week(Friend and I traded 2 e6's for 2 Z-stars) and they were nice. Good distance off tee and had good control around green.
They held up a bit better than the e6's IMO and were "on par" with the prov1x's.Joshua:

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I'll double co-sign on the Z-Stars, just switched to them yesterday and man they are so nice. The cover is solid, and can spin the ball just enough. They honestly feel like a mix of DT-solos and ProV1s in my opinion as far as feel and around the green.
I also got a 50 pack of them for about $100 through lostgolfballs.com - seriously that site is the bomb, because the ball you're hitting is in great condition.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I prefer the ProV1x myself. But I don't like to pay for them, lol. My uncle's land up near Houghton butts up against the Michigan Tech course, so I stock up whenever I visit him. He has 5 gallon buckets full, and many of them are as good as new. I might check out these Srixons you guys are talking about because I played with one of theirs a few years back (don't remember which one) and liked them.
I got out 3 days in a row back on my hometown course when I was visiting the family. Friday I played in a little 2-man scramble with my dad and we shot a 34 and won a few bucks. Then 9 holes on Saturday - +3 39. 18 on Sunday - +7 79. I have a nice streak going where I haven't lost a ball or carded anything worse than a bogey this year. I know it won't last, but I sure am enjoying the ride.Last edited by ImTellinTim; 05-29-2012, 11:15 PM.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
Can you guys point me in the right direction in getting started in golf? Like I'm starting from 0 pretty much, unless you include Putt-Putt as golf experience.
Like are there good sites/forums that I can go to learn? What's the first step? Things like that. From what I can tell I start off at a little of a disadvantage being left handed and tall (6'5"). Seems like there are less clubs that fit that description.Fan of....

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
if you are serious about picking it up then I'd follow exactly what Donkey just stated. However starting from 0 as you put it, I wouldn't personally invest that much money from the start until you are 100% sure and committed to the sport. I'd get a starter set of clubs first and then gradually upgrade them as you go. Maybe even go to a golf mart if you have one in your area and look at their used section. They have good prices on clubs and you get a 90 day full play return/exchange policy so you can feel free to take them out and if you don't like them you can bring them back.
Anyways, I'm playing my first private course tomorrow. Kind of excited/nervous.Comment

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
If you have the money, honestly go get some lessons and get fitted for clubs. That's the best way to start. As far as what kind of clubs, height isn't the only criteria for clubs. You can be tall and actually still use standard length clubs. I've never been fitted (still using the first set of clubs I got), but they're standard length, and fit me just fine. It's a combination of your height and the distance between your wrist and the floor.Fan of....

Re: The OS Golfer's Thread!
I don't mind spending the money, but I want to make sure it's something I enjoy before I go dropping a lot of cash on it. The height thing comes from going to a driving range with some buddies back in high school, and since I didn't have any clubs I used some old one they there. It was either me swinging over the top and missing completely or having to hunch over uncomfortably just to hit the ball. That could have been me just not knowing what I was doing, but it seemed like it should have been a little longer.Comment
